Arthropod-borne <i>Rickettsia</i> species are obligate intracellular bacteria which are pathogenic for humans. Within this genus, <i>Rickettsia slovaca</i> and <i>Rickettsia conorii</i> cause frequent and potentially severe infections, whereas <i>Rickettsia raoultii</i> and <i>Rickettsia massiliae</i> cause rare and milder infections.
