Changing subsistence practices in pre-European populations of South Vanuatu

ABSTRACT: This paper reports on human burials and dietary reconstructions using a combination of mortuary, isotopic data and new 14C dates, recorded on mortuary contexts excavated at Aniwa, Futuna, and Tanna islands in 1964 during Shutlers pioneering archaeological work and more recently in the course of our South Vanuatu Archaeological Survey (SVAS) project. The earliest burials date to the first millennium AD, with subsequent changes and continuities of practice into the 19th century. Isotopic results suggest an influence of geographic and environmental characteristics of each islands on their diet. Diachronic comparisons suggest a decrease in diet breadth over time without significant change in food trophic level. These variations are discussed in relation to the complex history of island settlement, adaptation, and interaction in the region and beyond. In this paper, we analyse carbon and nitrogen isotopic data measured in individuals from Aniwa, Tanna and Futuna in relation to ecological and cultural features of the islands, and discuss their variation in relation to the islands’ complex history of settlement, adaptation, and interaction within the South Vanuatu region and beyond.

Project description:For a long time, Neanderthals were considered hunters of large mammals, whereas the diversification of the exploited faunal spectrum to include smaller taxa, including birds, was assumed to be specific to anatomically modern humans. In recent decades, archaeozoological analyses of faunal remains from layers associated with Middle Palaeolithic lithic industries have revealed traces of human manipulation of small taxa, indicating the exploitation of a wider range of animals than previously thought, including small or fast-moving animals such as molluscs, leporids and birds. These new data have challenged the view that Neanderthals did not exploit small animals, thereby narrowing the behavioral gap with anatomically modern humans. Nevertheless, the information currently available comes almost exclusively from southern Europe and the nature of Neanderthal small fauna exploitation in northern Europe remains largely unknown. The present study aims to fill this gap by applying archaeozoological methods, including detailed taphonomic and traceological analyses, to 118 bird remains recovered from levels containing Middle Palaeolithic industries at Scladina cave, southern Belgium. Analyses of proteomics were applied to clarify the taxonomic identity of two morphologically non-diagnostic elements. Compared to mammal remains, bird bones, most of which belong to the order Galliformes, are scarce at Scladina Cave. This is likely due to conservation bias. Traces of non-human predators or scavengers, suggest that mammalian carnivores are responsible for accumulating a considerable portion of the avian assemblage. In total, seven bird bones exhibit anthropogenic traces, and one element presents questionable traces. Various Galliformes and a cormorant were exploited likely for their meat, during MIS 5 and/or 6 and MIS 6. The terminal posterior phalanx (talon) of a raptor of the size of a pomarine eagle displays intense polishing that could be linked to human manipulation of this element (MIS 5 and/or 6), although in the absence of tool marks this remains hypothetical at this stage. On the radius of a Western capercaillie, two deep incisions may indicate bone working, and intense use-wear on one of the fractured ends indicates that the bone has been utilized, potentially on soft organic material (MIS 6). This study provides the first evidence of the exploitation of birds during the Middle Palaeolithic in Belgium and constitutes the only detailed archaeozoological analysis of bird material in northwestern Europe. The likely transformation and use of a bird bone is only the second example recovered from Neanderthal occupations. The novel taxa identified as Neanderthal prey highlight the plasticity of Neanderthal ecological behavior, adapting to different landscapes and climates and exploiting the full spectrum of locally available prey.

Project description:Larval settlement and metamorphosis is a vital transition period for marine invertebrates and can have far-reaching effects on the ecology and evolution of a species. To explore the molecular mechanisms of this critical process in a non-model organism, the tropical abalone Haliotis asinina, we employed cDNA microarray methods. By comparing gene expression profiles through mid to late larval development and metamorphosis, we identified 144 genes as likely candidates for a role in competence and/or metamorphosis. Gene characterization showed that ~60% of these were significantly similar to previously described genes from other taxa, while ~40% had no significant similarities to any known genes. A high 49.3% of genes were gastropod- or abalone-specific, but none appear to be Lophotrochozoan-specific, despite the fact that metamorphosis is thought to have had a separate origin in this group. Based on temporal expression profiles, the differentially expressed larval and postlarval genes can be clustered into 5 categories that reveal there are strikingly different transcriptional patterns occurring during this phase of development. Some classes of gene activation are contingent upon exogenous cues and correlate with the initiation of settlement and metamorphosis. Importantly, there is also extensive gene activity associated with the endogenous attainment of competence, which occurs prior to, and independent of, the exogenous induction of settlement. Our results show that as the haliotid veliger larva matures, it requires the coordinated regulation of temporally different batteries of genes involved in a wide range of physiological and developmental processes associated with colonisation of the benthos. Although the signalling pathways operating at metamorphosis may be conserved across the animal kingdom, it appears they are regulating the expression of novel genes specific to abalone, gastropods and molluscs during H. asinina metamorphosis. Keywords: timecourse; metamorphosis; marine ecology Each microarray slide contained a different combination of 2 of the 9 developmental stages used in the experiment (66 hpf, 78 hpf, 90 hpf, 108 hpf, 120 hpf, 144 hpf, 12 hpi, 24 hpi, 48 hpi). Each developmental stage was subjected to 4 hybridisations â amounting to 4 technical replicates per stage - in a loop design (Churchill 2002; Oleksiak et al. 2002). This design led to raw data consisting of 72 measurements - 9 stages with 8 replicates (including 2 replicates per chip) - for each of 5541 spots.
