Transcriptome assembly and candidate genes involved in nutritional programming in Xiphophorus multilineatus

Project description:Nutritional programming takes place in early development. Variation in the quality and/or quantity of nutrients in early development can influence long-term health and viability. However, little is known about the mechanism of nutritional programming. The live-bearing fish Xiphophorus multilineatus, has the potential to be a new model for understanding these mechanisms, given evidence of both genetic and nutritional programming influences on juvenile growth rate. To study the molecular signatures of nutritional programming, we assembled a de novo transcriptome for X. multilineatus, and used RNA-Seq to profile gene expression in the brains of males reared in low and high quality juvenile environments. We found131 genes were differentially expressed, including metabolism and appetite master regulator agrp gene.

FePO<sub>4</sub> NPs Are an Efficient Nutritional Source for Plants: Combination of Nano-Material Properties and Metabolic Responses to Nutritional Deficiencies.

Project description:Phosphorous and iron are a macro- and micronutrient, respectively, whose low bioavailability can negatively affect crop productivity. There is ample evidence that the use of conventional P and Fe fertilizers has several environmental and economical disadvantages, but even though great expectations surround nanotechnology and its applications in the field of plant nutrition, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the uptake and use of these sub-micron particles (nanoparticles, NPs) by crop species. This work shows that cucumber and maize plants both use the nutrients borne by FePO4 NPs more efficiently than those supplied as bulk. However, morpho-physiological parameters and nutrient content analyses reveal that while cucumber plants (a Strategy I species with regard to Fe acquisition) mainly use these NPs as a source of P, maize (a Strategy II species) uses them preferentially for Fe. TEM analyses of cucumber root specimens revealed no cell internalization of the NPs. On the other hand, electron-dense nanometric structures were evident in proximity of the root epidermal cell walls of the NP-treated plants, which after ESEM/EDAX analyses can be reasonably identified as iron-oxyhydroxide. It appears that the nutritional interaction between roots and NPs is strongly influenced by species-specific metabolic responses.

Project description:The aim of this work was to study the effects of Fe and Mn deficiencies and Mn toxicity on the protein profile of the root of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), with the aim of elucidating plant response mechanisms to these nutritional stresses. Tomato was chosen as a model plant because the tomato genome has been published. The high-throughput shotgun analysis has permitted to identify and quantitate a large number of low abundance proteins in the tomato root. Protein identification was carried out using the Mascot search engine and the non-redundant databases NCBInr and ITAG v2.3.

Project description:According to available data, 30-60% of patients are undernourished at hospital admission. The significance of the perioperative nutrition has already been studied in the 1930s. The outcomes of published studies demonstrated that patients with basic nutrient deficiencies have a higher frequency of postoperative complications and have a significantly longer recovery period. The main aim of the this prospective clinical trial is to evaluate the loss of muscle mass and strength of the patient, the self-sufficiency and the possibility of returning to normal activities, in relation to pre-operatively served nutritional supplements in patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer.
