Project description:The biological effect of radiofrequency (RF) fields remains controversial. We address this issue by examining whether RF fields can cause changes in gene expression. We observed that 221 genes altered their expression after a 2-hour exposure. The number of affected genes increased to 759 after a 6-hour exposure. Functional classification of the affected genes reveals that apoptosis-related genes were among the up-regulated ones and the cell cycle genes among the down-regulated ones. We observed no significant increase in the expression of heat shock genes. These results indicate that the RF fields at 2.45 GHz can alter gene expression in cultured human cells through non-thermal mechanism. Project description:This study assessed changes in gene expression in 7 mouse brain regions using Illumina Mouse WG-6 (v2) beadchips after exposure to 1.9 GHz pulse-modulated radiofrequency field exposure for 4h/day for 5 days. High dose RF field exposure was whole body average SAR and brain average SAR were 1.45 W/kg and 0.16 W/kg, respectively. Total RNA isolated from the amygdala, auditory cortex, caudate, cerebellum, hippocampus, hypothalamus and medial prefrontal cortex of 1.9 GHz pulse-modulated radiofrequency field exposed mice and compared to that in sham (handled) exposed animals. An unhandled control group was also included in the study design. A total of 20 RNA samples (5 independent biological tissues for each of 4 treatment groups) were collected for each brain region. When analysis of gene expression was conducted within individual brain regions when controlling the false discovery rate (FDR), no differentially expressed genes were identified relative to the sham control. However, it must be noted that most fold changes among groups were observed to be less than 1.5 fold and this study had limited ability to detect such small changes. While some genes were differentially expressed without correction for multiple-comparisons testing, no consistent pattern of response was observed among different RF-exposure levels or among different RF-modulations. The current study provides the most comprehensive analysis of potential gene expression changes in the rodent brain in response to RF field exposure conducted to date. Within the exposure conditions and limitations of this study, no convincing evidence of consistent changes in gene expression was found in response to 1.9 GHz pulse-modulated RF field exposure.

Therefore our studies have aimed to evaluate 94 GHz effects on skin cells whole gene expression. Each group of animals were equally split in Exposed and Sham exposed subgroup. This two independent exposure experiments were conducted during 5 months, with rats exposed 3 h per day, 3 days per week, to an incident power density of 10 mW/cm², which correspond to twice the ICNIRP limit of exposure for professional. At the end of the experiment, skin explant were taken and RNA were extracted. Then, the modification of the whole gene expression were analyzed with gene expression microarray. Without modification of the animal’s temperature, long term chronic 94 GHz-MMW exposure did not significantly modify the rat’s skin gene expression on both young and adult rats.

Project description:Despite many studies over a decade, it still remains ambiguous as to the real biological effects induced by radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF). Epidemiological studies indicates that long-term exposure to EMF could increase the risk of breast cancer. Some reports have showed that in vitro EMF exposures change cellular gene expression. In this study, we investigated global gene expression responses to RF EMF simulating the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) 1800 MHz signal in human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 using transcriptomic approaches. MCF-7 cells were intermittently (5 min fields on/10 min fields off) exposed to RF EMF at an average specific absorption rate (SAR) of 2.0 W/kg (2 W/kg exposure group) or sham-exposed (2 W/kg control group) for 24 h, or exposed to RF EMF at a higher level of 3.5 W/kg (3.5 W/kg exposure group) or sham-exposed (3.5 W/kg control group).

Project description:The rapid deployment of 5G spectrum by the telecommunication industry is intended to promote better connectivity and data integration among various industries. However, since exposures to radio frequency radiations (RFR) >2.4 GHz are still uncommon, concerns about their potential health impacts are ongoing. In this study, we used the embryonic zebrafish model to assess the impacts of a 3.5 GHz RFR on biology- a frequency typically used by 5G-enabled cell phones and lies within the 4G and 5G bandwidth. We established a plate-based exposure setup for RFRs, exposed developing zebrafish to 3.5 GHz RFR, specific absorption rate (SAR) ? 8.27 W/Kg from 6 h post fertilization (hpf) to 48 hpf, and measured a battery of morphological and behavioral endpoints at 120 hpf. Our results revealed no significant impacts on mortality, morphology or photomotor response and a modest inhibition of startle response suggesting some levels of sensorimotor disruptions. This suggests that the cell phone radiations at low GHz-level frequencies are likely benign, with subtle sensorimotor effects. Through this assessment, we have established a robust setup for zebrafish RFR exposures readily amenable to testing various powers and frequencies. Future developmental exposure studies in zebrafish will evaluate a wider portion of the radio frequency spectrum to discover the bioactive regions, the potential molecular targets of RFR and the potential long-term effects on adult behavior.

Project description:<p>With the rapid development of 5G networks, the influence of the radiofrequency field (RF) generated from 5G communication equipment on human health are gathering increasing attention. This study aimed at assessing the effects of long-term exposure to 4.9 GHz (one of the working frequency of 5G communication) RF field on fecal microbiome and metabolome profiles in 9-week-old male C57BL/6 mice. The animals were divided into sham group (n = 8) and radiofrequency group (RF group; n = 8), then whole body exposed or sham exposed to RF field for one hour per day during 3 weeks (21 days) at whole body Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of 6.3 W/kg. After RF exposure, the mice fecal samples were collected to detect gut microorganisms and metabolites by 16S rRNA gene sequencing method and LC-MS method, respectively. The results showed that intestinal microbial compositions were altered in RF group, as evidenced by reduced microbial diversity and changed microbial community distribution. Metabolomics profiling identified 258 significantly differentially abundant metabolites in RF group, 57 of which can be classified to Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways. Besides, functional correlation analysis showed that changes in gut microbiota genera were significantly correlated with changes in fecal metabolites. In summary, the results suggested that altered gut microbiota and metabolic profile are associated with 4.9 GHz radiofrequency exposure.</p>
