ABSTRACT: In the title salt, [Co(C(5)H(4)N(2)O(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)]Cl(2), the Co(II) ion is located on an inversion center. It is chelated by two neutral pyrimidine-2-carboxylic acid molecules and is coordinated by two water mol-ecules in an octa-hedral coordination geometry. The cations and anions are linked via O-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds into a layer structure; an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond connects the carboxylic acid group to the pyrimidine N atom.

In each cation, the Co(II) cation is coordinated by four N atoms from two biimidazole and two O atoms of two water mol-ecules; one Co atom is at a position of site symmetry m, the other at a position of site symmetry 2/m. All Cl(-) ions and water mol-ecules are also located on the mirror plane. Each structural unit is connected through O-H?Cl and N-H?Cl inter-molecular hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular structure.

The Co(II) atom is six-coordinated in a slightly distorted octa-hedral environment by four N atoms from four different ligands and by two O atoms from the water mol-ecules. The Co(II) atoms are bridged by the ligands into a (4,4) net. Adjacent nets are linked to the chloride anions and uncoordinated water mol-ecules via O-H⋯Cl and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional supra-molecular structure.

The asymmetric unit is completed by one 2-bromo-benzoate anion, one diethyl-nicotinamide (DENA) ligand and one coordinated water mol-ecule; all ligands are monodentate. The four O atoms in the equatorial plane around Co(II) form a slightly distorted square-planar arrangement, while the slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination is completed by the two pyridine N atoms of the DENA ligands in axial positions. The dihedral angle between the carboxyl-ate group and the attached benzene ring is 84.7 (1)°; the pyridine and benzene rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 43.64 (6)°. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network.

In the crystal structure, O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into infinite chains. π-π contacts between the parallel pyridine rings of neighboring DENA ligands [centroid-centroid distance = 3.652 (3) Å] further stabilize the crystal structure.

The four O atoms in the equatorial plane around the Co(II) ion form a slightly distorted square-planar arrangement, while the slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination is completed by the two N atoms of the DENA ligands in the axial positions. Intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the water mol-ecules to the carboxyl-ate groups. The dihedral angles between the carboxyl-ate groups and the adjacent benzene rings are 4.52 (18) and 4.56 (18)°, while the pyridine rings and the benzene rings are oriented at dihedral angles of 7.76 (10) and 5.67 (13)°. In the crystal, inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into chains propagating along [010]. C-H⋯O inter-actions and a π-π contact between the pyridine rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.476 (2) Å] are also observed.

Project description:In the title compound, [Co(C(4)H(4)O(4))(C(9)H(7)N)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](n), the Co(II) cation, located on an inversion center, is coordinated by two succinate anions, two isoquinoline ligands and two water mol-ecules in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The succinate anion, located across another inversion center, bridges the Co cations, forming polymeric chains running along the b axis. The partially overlapped arrangement of parallel isoquinoline ring systems of adjacent polymeric chains and the shorter face-to-face distance of 3.402 (6) Å indicates the existence of weak π-π stacking in the crystal structure. Classical intra- and inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding and weak non-classical inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding help to stabilize the crystal structure.

The two Ni atoms are bridged by two phenolate O atoms and the intra-molecular Ni?Ni distance is 3.0751?(9)?Å. The crystal structure is stabilized by O-H?Cl hydrogen bonds.
