ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(38)H(29)N(7)O(12), the five-membered ring adopts an envelope conformation in which the 'flap' is cis to the cyclo-propane group. This conformation is similar to those of other bicyclo-[3.1.0]hexane analogues for which crystal structures have been reported. The absolute configuration of the stereogenic centers on the cyclo-pentane ring, as determined by comparison with the known configurations of the stereogenic centers in the (2S)-2-acet-oxy-2-phenyl-acet-oxy groups, is 1(R), 2(R), 3(R), 4(R) and 5(S). An intramolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond is present.

The structure is epimeric to the previously characterized dimeric penta-fluoro-phenyl ester with stereochemistry (3R,4R,5R), which was synthesized using d-ribose as starting material. The crystal structure of the title mol-ecule removes any ambiguities arising from the relative stereochemistries of the six chiral centres. Two hydrogen bonds, bifurcating from the NH group, stabilize the crystal: one intra-molecular and one inter-molecular, both involving O atoms of the meth-oxy groups. The asymmetric unit contains two independent mol-ecules not related by any pseudo-symmetry operators. The major conformational differences are localized, leading to one mol-ecule being extended compared to the other. The collected crystal was twinned (twin ratio is 0.939:0.061), and the azide group is positionally disordered over two positions in one mol-ecule [occupancy ratio 0.511?(18):0.489?(18)].

Project description:The relative configuration of the title compound, C(11)H(18)O(3), which was synthesized using a catalytic asymmetric Gosteli-Claisen rearrangement, a diastereoselective reduction with K-Selectride and an Evans aldol addition, was corroborated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The five-membered ring has an envelope conformation with a dihedral angle of 29.46 (16)° between the coplanar part and the flap (the hydr-oxy-bearing ring C atom). The acetyl group is almost perpendicular to the benzene ring to which it is connected [C-C-O-C torsion angle = 90.4?(12)°]. The conformation about the ethene bond [1.313?(7)?Å] is E. The atoms of the benzene ring and its attached ester group and part of the hy-droxy tert-butyl ester side chain are disordered over two sets of sites in a 50:50 ratio. Linear supra-molecular chains along the a axis mediated by hy-droxy-carbonyl O-H?O hydrogen bonds feature in the crystal packing. The same H atom also partakes in an intra-molecular O-H?O inter-action.
