ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [Ni(C(12)H(6)O(4))(C(10)H(14)N(4))(H(2)O)](n), the coordination polyhedron around each Ni(II) atom is a distorted cis-NiN(2)O(4) octa-hedron. The naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxyl-ate and 1,1'-(butane-1,4-di-yl)diimidazole ligands bridge the Ni centres to form a two-dimensional (4,4)-network, and O-H?O hydrogen bonds complete the structure.

The water mol-ecule and the L ligand are situated across a twofold rotation axis. The Mn(II) atoms are bridged by 1,4-ndc and L ligands, forming a three-dimensional network. O-H?O hydrogen bonds are observed within the network.

Each 1,1'-(1,4-butane-1,4-di-yl)diimidazole ligand coordinates to two Mn(II) atoms located in adjacent layers via Mn-N coordination bonds, giving a three-dimensional network. As the methyl-ene groups can bend freely relative to each other due to the C atoms connected via single bonds, the 1,1'-(butane-1,4-di-yl)diimidazole ligand forms an S-shaped conformation, which makes the void in the three-dimensional network distorted.

In the cation, the Ni(II) ion is six-coordinated by two imidazole ligands [Ni-N = 2.0568?(14)?Å] and four water mol-ecules [both independent Ni-O distances are 2.098?(1)?Å] in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Inter-molecular O-H?O and N-H?O hydrogen bonds form an extensive three-dimensional network, which consolidates the crystal packing.

Bridging by the ligands results in a ribbon structure. Adjacent ribbons are linked to the nitrate anions via O-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming layers. One nitrate O atom is disordered equally over two positions.
