Methyl 4-methyl-benzoate.

ABSTRACT: The structure of the title compound, C(9)H(10)O(2), is related to that of 4-methyl-phenyl 4-methyl-benzoate and ethyl-ene di-4-methyl-benzoate showing similar bond parameters. The mol-ecule is planar, the dihedral angle between the aromatic ring and the -COOMe group being 0.95 (6)°. The cystal structure exhibits inter-molecular C-H⋯O contacts that link mol-ecules into infinite chains extended in the [001] direction.

Project description:The title compound, C(26)H(20)O(2), has long been known, but was not structurally characterized until now. It adopts the Z conformation and the atoms comprising the ester linkage are essentially coplanar (r.m.s. deviation of 0.0234 Å). The acyl C-O bond length of 1.470 (2) Å falls within the normal range seen for esters of tertiary alcohols and is below the value of 1.496 Å found in tri-tert-butyl-methyl 4-nitro-benzoate.

Project description:In the title compound, C(9)H(8)N(2)O(6), the methyl ester group is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.002 Å) and is oriented at a dihedral angle of 24.27 (16)° with respect to the benzene ring. The nitro groups make dihedral angles of 4.2 (5)° and 60.21 (11)° with the benzene ring. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O inter-actions, resulting in zigzag chains.

Project description:The conformation of the C=O bond in the title compound 2MP4MBA, C(15)H(14)O(2), is anti to the ortho-methyl group in the phen-oxy ring. The bond parameters in 2MP4MBA are similar to those in 3-methyl-phenyl 4-methyl-benzoate (3MP4MBA), 4-methyl-phenyl 4-methyl-benzoate (4MP4MBA) and other aryl benzoates. The dihedral angle between the two aromatic rings in 2MP4MBA is 73.04 (8)°.

The crystal structure is stabilized by weak inter-molecular bifurcated C-H⋯O inter-actions occurring in the (100) plane.
