Trilithium scandium bis-(orthoborate).

ABSTRACT: Single crystals of the title compound, Li(3)Sc(BO(3))(2), have been obtained by spontaneous nucleation from a high-temperature melt. The title compound adopts a framework structure and is composed of distorted [ScO(6)] octa-hedra, [LiO(4)] tetra-hedra, [LiO(4)] recta-ngles and isolated [BO(3)] triangles. Except for the Sc and one Li atom (both on inversion centres), all atoms are in general positions.

Project description:Single crystals of tris-odium scandium bis-(orthoborate), Na(3)Sc(BO(3))(2), have been obtained by spontaneous crystallization from an Na(2)O-Sc(2)O(3)-B(2)O(3) melt. The crystal structure features a three-dimensional framework composed of planar [BO(3)](3-) groups and distorted ScO(6) octa-hedra with Na atoms in the cavities. The Sc atom occupies a special position (Wyckoff position 2b, site symmetry -1) and of the two Na atoms, one occupies a special position (Wyckoff position 2c, site symmetry -1).

Formation and ligand-based reductive chemistry of bridged bis-alkylidene scandium(iii) complexes.

Project description:The chemistry of rare-earth carbene and alkylidene complexes including their synthesis, structure and reaction is a challenging issue because of their high reactivity (or instability) and the lack of synthetic methods. In this work, we report the first synthesis of the bridged bis-alkylidene complexes which feature a 2-butene-1,1,4,4-tetraanion and four Sc-C(sp3) bonds by the reaction of 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes with ScCl3. This reaction proceeds via two key intermediates: an isolable scandacyclopentadiene and a proposed scandacyclopropene. The scandacyclopentadiene undergoes ?,?'-C-C bond cleavage to generate the scandacyclopropene, which then dimerizes to afford the bridged bis-alkylidene complex via a cooperative double metathesis reaction. Reaction chemistry study of the bridged bis-alkylidene complex reveals their ligand-based reduction reactivity towards different oxidants such as hexachloroethane, disulfide and cyclooctatetraene.

Trilithium thio-arsenate octa-hydrate.

Project description:The title compound, Li3AsS4·8H2O, is built up from infinite cationic [Li3(H2O)8](3+) chains which extend along [001] and are cross-linked by isolated tetra-hedral AsS4 (3-) anions via O-H?S hydrogen bonds. Two Li and two As atoms lie on special positions with site symmetries -1 (1 × Li) and 2 (1 × Li and 2 × As). The [Li3(H2O)8](3+) chain contains four independent Li atoms of which two are in octa-hedral and two in tetra-hedral coordination by water O atoms. An outstanding feature of this chain is a linear group of three edge-sharing LiO6 octa-hedra to both ends of which two LiO4 tetra-hedra are attached by face-sharing. Such groups of composition Li5O16 are linked into branched chains by means of a further LiO4 tetra-hedron sharing vertices with four adjacent LiO6 octa-hedra. The Li-O bonds range from 1.876?(5) to 2.054?(6)?Å for the LiO4 tetra-hedra and from 2.026?(5) to 2.319?(5)?Å for the LiO6 octa-hedra. The two independent AsS4 (3-) anions have As-S bond lengths ranging from 2.1482?(6) to 2.1677?(6)?Å [<As-S> = 2.161?(10)?Å]. The eight independent water mol-ecules of the structure donate 16 relatively straight O-H?S hydrogen bonds to all S atoms of the AsS4 tetra-hedra [<O?S> = 3.295?(92)?Å]. Seven water mol-ecules are in distorted tetra-hedral coordination by two Li and two S; one water mol-ecule has a flat pyramidal coordination by one Li and two S. At variance with related compounds like Schlippe's salt, Na3SbS4·9H2O, there are neither alkali-sulfur bonds nor O-H?O hydrogen bonds in the structure.

Project description:The title compound, [Li(3)(C(4)F(9)O)(3)(C(3)H(6)O)(3)], features an open Li/O cube with an Li ion missing at one corner. Three of the four bridging O atoms of the cube carry a fluorinated tert-butyl residue, whereas the fourth is part of an acetone mol-ecule. Two of the Li atoms are further bonded to a non-bridging acetone mol-ecule. Two of the lithium ion coordination geometries are very distorted LiO(4) tetra-hedra; the third could be described as a very distorted LiO(3) T-shape with two distant F-atom neighbours. The Li?Li contact distances for the three-coordinate Li(+) ion [2.608?(14) and 2.631?(12)?Å] are much shorter that the contact distance [2.940?(13)?Å] between the tetra-hedrally coordinated species.

The monoclinic form of trilithium dichromium(III) tris-(orthophosphate).

Project description:The monoclinic form of trilithium dichromium(III) tris-(ortho-phosphate), Li3Cr2(PO4)3, was prepared by the reactive halide flux method. The structure of the title compound is composed of a three-dimensional anionic framework with composition ? (3)[Cr2(PO4)3](3-) and Li(+) ions situated in the empty channels. The rigid framework built up from CrO6 octa-hedra and PO4 tetra-hedra is the same as that found in other monoclinic Li3 M 2(PO4)3 (M = Fe, Sc, V) phases. The three Li(+) cations of Li3Cr2(PO4)3 are unequally disordered over six crystallographically different sites. The classical charge balance of the title compound can be represented as [Li(+)]3[Cr(3+)]2[P(5+)]3[O(2-)]12. Solid-state UV/Vis spectra indicate that the crystal filed splitting (?0) of the Cr(3+) ion is around 2.22?eV.

Reduced Arene Complexes of Scandium.

Project description:Alkali metal naphthalenide or anthracenide reacted with scandium(III) anilides [Sc(X){N(tBu)Xy}2 (thf)] (X=N(tBu)Xy (1); X=Cl (2); Xy=C6 H3 -3,5-Me2 ) to give scandium complexes [M(thf)n ][Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (RA)] (M=Li-K; n=1-6; RA=C10 H8 2- (3-Naph-K) and C14 H10 2- (3-Anth-M)) containing a reduced arene ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the scandium(III) center bonded to the naphthalene dianion in a ?2 :?-coordination mode, whereas the anthracene dianion is symmetrically attached to the scandium(III) center in a ?2 -fashion. All compounds have been characterized by multinuclear, including 45 Sc?NMR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations of these intensely colored arene complexes confirm scandium to be in the oxidation state +3. The intense absorptions observed in the UV/Vis spectra are due to ligand-to-metal charge transfers. Whereas nitriles underwent C-C coupling reaction with the reduced arene ligand, the reaction with one equivalent of [NEt3 H][BPh4 ] led to the mono-protonation of the reduced arene ligand.

Thermoelectric Properties of Scandium Sesquitelluride.

Project description:Rare-earth (RE) tellurides have been studied extensively for use in high-temperature thermoelectric applications. Specifically, lanthanum and praseodymium-based compounds with the Th₃P₄ structure type have demonstrated dimensionless thermoelectric figures of merit (zT) up to 1.7 at 1200 K. Scandium, while not part of the lanthanide series, is considered a RE element due to its chemical similarity. However, little is known about the thermoelectric properties of the tellurides of scandium. Here, we synthesized scandium sesquitelluride (Sc₂Te₃) using a mechanochemical approach and formed sintered compacts through spark plasma sintering (SPS). Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were measured from 300⁻1100 K. Sc₂Te₃ exhibited a peak zT = 0.3 over the broad range of 500⁻750 K due to an appreciable power factor and low-lattice thermal conductivity in the mid-temperature range.

A New Class of Scandium Carbide Nanosheet.

Project description:A new class of two-dimensional scandium carbide nanosheet has been identified by using first-principles density functional theory. It has a primitive cell of Sc3C10, in which there are two pentagonal carbon rings surrounded by one scandium octagon. Being as the precussor of Volleyballene Sc20C60 and ScC nanotubes, the Sc3C10 nanosheet is exceptionally stable. By rolling up this Sc3C10 sheet, a series of stable ScC nanotubes have been obtained. All the nanotubes studied have been found to be metallic. Furthermore, the hydrogen storage capacity of the ScC nanotubes has been explored. The calculated results show that one unit of the (0,3) ScC nanotube can adsorb a maximum of 51 hydrogen molecules, reaching up to a 6.25?wt% hydrogen gravimetric density with an average binding energy of 0.23?eV/H2.

Project description:Treatment of scandium nitrate tetra-hydrate with the tetra-dentate ligand H2salophen [N,N'-bis-(salicyl-idene)-1,2-phenyl-enedi-amine] afforded the yellow dinuclear complex Sc(NO3)2(μ-salophen)Sc(salophen)(EtOH) or [Sc2(C20H14N2O2)2(NO3)2(C2H6O)] (systematic name: (ethanol-κO)bis-(nitrato-κ2 O,O'){μ-2,2'-[1,2-phenyl-enebis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato-κ4 N,N',O,O':κ2 O,O'}{2,2'-[1,2-phenyl-enebis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato-κ4 O,N,N',O'}discandium). In this compound, one salophen ligand displays a bridging coordination via the two oxygen atoms, while the other salophen ligand is attached to only one Sc center. This arrangement is stabilized by a hydrogen-bonded EtOH co-ligand, and by π-π stacking inter-actions between the two salophen ligands.

Synthesis and versatile reactivity of scandium phosphinophosphinidene complexes.

Project description:M=E/M?E multiple bonds (M?=?transition metal, E?=?main group element) are of significant fundamental scientific importance and have widespread applications. Expanding the ranges of M and E represents grand challenges for synthetic chemists and will bring new horizons for the chemistry. There have been reports of M=E/M?E multiple bonds for the majority of the transition metals, and even some actinide metals. In stark contrast, as the largest subgroup in the periodic table, rare-earth metals (Ln) were scarcely involved in Ln=E/Ln?E multiple bonds. Until recently, there were a few examples of rare-earth monometallic alkylidene, imido and oxo complexes, featuring Ln=C/N/O bonds. What are in absence are rare-earth monometallic phosphinidene complexes with Ln=P bonds. Herein, we report synthesis and structure of rare-earth monometallic phosphinidene complexes, namely scandium phosphinophosphinidene complexes. Reactivity of scandium phosphinophosphinidene complexes is also mapped out, and appears to be easily tuned by the supporting ligand.
