The dihedral angles between the thio-phene and phenyl rings are 81.7?(7) and 85.5?(7)°.

Project description:The title chiral imine, C(17)H(15)NS, has been obtained via a direct synthesis route. The imine group displays the common E configuration, and is almost coplanar with the thio-phene heterocycle; the dihedral angle between the C=N-C group and the thio-phene ring is 5.1?(8)°. In contrast, the naphthyl group makes an angle of 83.79?(13)° with the thio-phene ring. The observed solid-state mol-ecular conformation is suitable for the use of this mol-ecule as an N,S-bidentate Schiff base ligand. The mol-ecular packing features double C-H?? inter-actions between naphthyl groups of neighboring mol-ecules, which form chains in the [100] direction. The crystal structure is further stabilized by a short C-H?? contact involving the methyl group and one ring of a naphthyl group. The resulting two-dimensional network is completed by a weak inter-molecular C-H(imine)??(thio-phene) inter-action.

The mol-ecule is nearly planar. The angle between the thio-phene and pyridine rings is 8.63 (4)° and features the expected trans configuration about the imine bond. The structure is stabilized by a weak inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond. The distance between centroids of adjacent thio-phene rings [3.67 (8) Å] suggests the presence of π-π inter-actions.

The piperidone ring adopts a half-chair conformation due to the presence of the conjugated ketone systems. Both thio-phene rings are disordered over two orientations [occupancies of 0.758?(2)/0.242?(2) and 0.588?(2)/0.412?(2)] at 180° from one another. In the crystal, weak inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds, C-H?? and aromatic ?-? stacking inter-actions [shortest centroid-centroid separation = 3.865?(3)?Å] help to stabilize the packing.

Project description:The title compound, C(10)H(8)BrN, was obtained by slow addition of sodium azide to 8-bromo-1-naphthoic acid, followed by addition of aqueous ammonia. The crude product was crystallized from petroleum ether to give pink crystals. Compared to other 1,8-disubstituted naphthalene compounds, this compound exhibits less strain between the 1 and 8 substituents. Additionally, the NH protons form both intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds. The naphthalene units are arranged in a herring-bone stacking motif.
