Potassium zinc borate, KZnB(3)O(6).

ABSTRACT: The title compound, KZnB(3)O(6) contains a remarkable [B(6)O(12)](6-) group ( symmetry) formed by two rings linked by edge-sharing BO(4) tetra-hedra, a feature that has only been observed previously under high pressure conditions. These borate groups are connected through distorted ZnO(4) tetra-hedra in edge-shared pairs ( symmetry), forming a three-dimensional network whose cavities are filled by K(+) cations.

The structure is composed of one K(+) cation and a polyborate (1) (∞)[B(5)O(7)(OH)(2)](-) anion, which consists of two six-membered rings linked by a common BO(4) tetra-hedron. The [B(5)O(7)(OH)(2)](-) units are linked together through two exocyclic O atoms to neighbouring units, forming a helical chain structure extending parallel to [010]. Adjacent chains are further connected into a three-dimensional structure by K-O bonds and weak O-H⋯O hydrogen-bond inter-actions.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title compound, K(2)[B(10)O(14)(OH)(4)]·H(2)O, the polyborate [B(10)O(14)(OH)(4)](2-) anions are linked together through their common O atoms, forming a helical chain-like structure. Adjacent chains are further connected into a three-dimensional structure by O-H?O hydrogen bonds. The water mol-ecules and potassium cations are located between these chains. Further O-H?O hydrogen bonds occur between the anions and the water mol-ecules.

Project description:The title compounds, K(+)·C7H7BF3O(-), (I), and K(+)·C6H4BF4 (-), (II), are mol-ecular salts containing para-substituted phenyl-tri-fluorido-borate anions. In each compound, the B atom adopts a distorted tetra-hedral BCF3 geometry. Despite their different compositions and space groups, the irregular KF8 coordination polyhedra of the potassium cations in the structures are almost identical. These polyhedra share faces and edges, generating infinite (010) layers in (I) and infinite (001) layers in (II). In (I), adjacent layers are stacked in an AAA… fashion, whereas in (II), they are stacked in an ABAB… sequence.

Project description:The title compound, K(+)·C(8)H(8)BF(3)N(3) (-), is a salt containing the chiral organic trifluorido-borate anion. The organic anions and potassium cations are tightly bound to each other by the coordination K-F [2.654?(3)-3.102?(3)?Å] and K-N [2.951?(4)-3.338?(4)?Å] inter-actions. Thus, the potassium cation adopts a nine-vertex coordination polyhedron, which can be described as a distorted monocapped tetra-gonal anti-prism. In the crystal, the organic anions and potassium cations form layers parallel to (001). Weak C-H?? inter-actions between neighbouring phenyl rings further stabilize the crystal.

Project description:Lanthanum zinc penta-borate, LaZnB(5)O(10), was synthesized by flux-supported solid-state reaction. It is a member of the LnMB(5)O(10) (Ln = rare earth ion and M = divalent metal ion) structure type. The crystal shows a three-dimensional structure constructed from two-dimensional {[B(5)O(10)](5-)}(n) layers with the lanthanum (coordination number nine) and zinc (coordination number six) ions filling in the inter-layers.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title salt, K(+)·C(13)H(14)BF(3)NO(2)·0.5H(2)O, consists of two derivatized indolyltrifluoridoborate anions, two potassium cations and one water mol-ecule. Within the indolyltrifluoro-borate anions, the least-square planes consisting of the carboxyl group and the adjacent quarternary C atom of the tert-butyl groups deviate significantly from coplanarity with the indolyl planes [20.44?(11) and 21.02?(10)°]. The potassium ions are coordinated by six atoms (one K(+) ion by two O and four F atoms, and the second K(+) ion by one O and five F atoms), however, one of the potassium ions undergoes an additional weak potassium-? inter-action (K?centroid = 3.722?Å). The packing is stabilized by sequential O-H?O hydrogen bonds along [100] between water mol-ecules and also by O-H?F hydrogen bonds.

Reinforcing Condensed Phase Flame Retardancy through Surface Migration of Brucite@Zinc Borate-Incorporated Systems.

Project description:An efficient brucite@zinc borate (3ZnO·3B2O3·3.5H2O) composite flame retardant (CFR), consisting of an incorporated nanostructure, is designed and synthesized via a simple and facile electrostatic adsorption route. It has been demonstrated that this incorporated system can enhance the interfacial interaction and improve the mechanical properties when used in ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) composites. Meanwhile, in the process of burning, the CFR particles can successively migrate and accumulate to the surface of the burning zone, increasing the local concentration and rapidly generating a compact barrier layer through a condensed phase reinforcement mechanism even at a lower loading value. Especially, compared with the EVA/physical mixture (PM, with the same proportion of brucite and zinc borate), the heat release rate (HRR), the peak of the heat release rate (PHRR), the total heat released (THR), the smoke production rate (SPR), and mass loss are considerably reduced. According to this study, controlling the nanostructure of flame-retardant particles, to improve the condensed phase char layer, gives a new approach for the design of green flame retardants.
