Dilead(II) chromium(III) hepta-fluoride.

ABSTRACT: Single crystals of the title compound, Pb(2)CrF(7), were obtained by solid-state reaction. The monoclinic structure is isotypic with Pb(2)RhF(7) and is built up of CrF(6) (3-) octa-hedra isolated from each other, inserted in a fluorite-related matrix of PbF(6) distorted octa-hedra, and PbF(8) square anti-prisms sharing edges and corners. The seventh F atom is 'independent', connected only to three Pb atoms within FPb(3) triangles, sharing an edge and building an almost planar Pb(4)F(2) unit, so that the formula can alternatively be written as Pb(2)F(CrF(6)).

Project description:In the title compound, Pb(2)(HPO(3))(NO(3))(2), the two distinct Pb(2+) ions (both with site symmetry m) adopt irregular PbO(10) coordination polyhedra. The structure is completed by two distinct nitrate groups (in which one O atom and the N atom have m site symmetry for both ions) and an HPO(3) (2-) anion (in which one O atom and the P and H atoms have m site symmetry). The connectivity of the PbO(10), NO(3) and HPO(3) units in the crystal structure results in a three-dimensional network.

A Near-Infrared-II Emissive Chromium(III) Complex.

Project description:The combination of π-donating amido with π-accepting pyridine coordination units in a tridentate chelate ligand causes a strong nephelauxetic effect in a homoleptic CrIII complex, which shifts its luminescence to the NIR-II spectral range. Previously explored CrIII polypyridine complexes typically emit between 727 and 778 nm (in the red to NIR-I spectral region), and ligand design strategies have so far concentrated on optimizing the ligand field strength. The present work takes a fundamentally different approach and focusses on increasing metal-ligand bond covalence to shift the ruby-like 2 E emission of CrIII to 1067 nm at 77 K.

Dilead(II) trimanganese(II) bis(hydrogenphosphate) bis(phosphate).

Project description:The title compound, Pb(2)Mn(3)(HPO(4))(2)(PO(4))(2), was synthesized by a hydro-thermal method. All atoms are in general positions except for one Mn atom which is located on an inversion center. The framework of the structure is built up from PO(4) tetra-hedra and two types of MnO(6) octa-hedra, one almost ideal and the other very distorted with one very long Mn-O bond [2.610 (4) Å compared an average of 2.161 Å for the other bonds]. The centrosymetric octa-hedron is linked to two distorted MnO(6) octa-hedra by an edge common, forming infinite zigzag Mn(3)O(14) chains running along the b axis. Adjacent chains are linked by PO(4) and PO(3)(OH) tetra-hedra through vertices or by edge sharing, forming sheets perpendicular to [100]. The Pb(2+) cations are sandwiched between the layers and ensure the cohesion of the crystal structure. O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding between the layers is also observed.

Chromium(III) substitution inhibits the Fe(II)-accelerated transformation of schwertmannite.

Project description:Schwertmannite is an Fe(III)-oxyhydroxysulfate which is common in acid mine drainage (AMD) and acid sulfate soil (ASS) environments. Natural schwertmannite is often enriched in Cr(III), yet the effects of Cr(III) substitution on schwertmannite transformation to more stable Fe(III) minerals has not been addressed. Here we examine, for the first time, the effects of Cr(III) substitution on the Fe(II)-accelerated transformation of schwertmannite. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy shows that Cr(III) substitution inhibits schwertmannite transformation. Substitution at a Cr(III):Fe(III) ratio of 0.025 decreased schwertmannite transformation (at pH 6.5) by 18-49% (depending on Fe(II) concentrations) relative to that of Cr(III)-free schwertmannite. Formation of crystalline secondary phases (predominantly goethite) caused associated decreases in solid-phase Fe and Cr extractability by 1 M HCl. The extractability of Cr was consistently greater than that of Fe, suggesting some accumulation of Cr(III) at the residual schwertmannite surface-a phenomenon which passivates the surface against Fe(II)/Fe(III) electron transfer and atom exchange required for the Fe(II)-accelerated transformation process. The finding that Cr(III)-substitution inhibits schwertmannite transformation implies that it may also significantly impact associated Fe, S and trace metal(loid) behaviour.

Occurrence and speciation of polymeric chromium(III), monomeric chromium(III) and chromium(VI) in environmental samples.

Project description:Laboratory experiments suggest that polymeric Cr(III) could exist in aqueous solution for a relative long period of time. However, the occurrence of polymeric Cr(III) has not been reported in environmental media due partially to the lack of method for speciating polymeric Cr. We observed an unknown Cr species during the course of study on speciation of Cr in the leachates of chromated-copper-arsenate (CCA)-treated wood. Efforts were made to identify structure of the unknown Cr species. Considering the forms of Cr existed in the CCA-treated woods, we mainly focused our efforts to determine if the unknown species were polymeric Cr(III), complex of Cr/As or complex of Cr with dissolved organic matter (DOM). In order to evaluate whether polymeric Cr(III) largely exist in wood leachates, high performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICPMS was used) for simultaneous speciation of monomeric Cr(III), polymeric Cr(III), and Cr(VI). In addition to wood leachates where polymeric Cr (III) ranged from 39.1 to 67.4%, occurrence of the unknown Cr species in other environmental matrices, including surface waters, tap and waste waters, was also investigated. It was found that polymeric Cr(III) could exist in environmental samples containing ?g/L level of Cr, at a level up to 60% of total Cr, suggesting that polymeric Cr(III) could significantly exist in natural environments. Failure in quantifying polymeric Cr(III) would lead to the underestimation of total Cr and bias in Cr speciation. The environmental implication of the presence of polymeric Cr(III) species in the environment deserves further study.

Poly[?(3)-hydroxido-?-(pyridine-2,4,6-tricarboxyl-ato)-dilead(II)].

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title coordination polymer, [Pb(2)(C(8)H(2)NO(6))(OH)](n), contains two crystallographically independent Pb(II) ions, one pyridine-2,4,6-tricarboxyl-ate (ptc) trianion and one hydroxide anion. One of the Pb(II) atoms is coordinated by one pyridine N and four carboxyl-ate O atoms from the ptc trianion and a hydroxide O atom in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The other Pb(II) atom is five-coordinated by three carboxyl-ate O atoms and two hydroxide O atoms in a distorted tetra-gonal-pyramidal geometry. Four neighbouring Pb(II) atoms are bridged through two ?(3)-hydroxide ligands, forming the centrosymmetric Pb(4)(OH)(2) core. The three-dimensional structure is further achieved through bridging carboxyl-ate groups. There are also O-H?O hydrogen bonds between the hydroxide ligand and the carboxyl-ate group.

Crystal structure of dilead(II) oxochromate(VI) oxotellurate(IV).

Project description:Reaction of chromium(III) precursors with TeO2 in PbF2/PbO melts in air led to oxidation of chromium(III) to chromium(VI), whereas tellurium remained its oxidation state of IV. In the resulting title compound, Pb2(CrO4)(TeO3), the two types of anions are isolated from each other, hence a double salt is formed. The two independent Pb2+ cations exhibit coordination number nine under formation of very distorted coordination polyhedra [bond-length range = 2.363?(6)-3.276?(7)?Å]. The oxochromate(VI) and oxotellurate(IV) anions have tetra-hedral and trigonal-pyramidal configurations, respectively. In the crystal structure, (001) layers of metal cations alternate with layers of TeO32- and CrO42- anions along [001], forming a three-dimensional framework structure. Pb2(CrO4)(TeO3) is isotypic with its sulfate analogue Pb2(SO4)(TeO3) and is comparatively discussed.

Tetra-potassium hepta-cyanido-molybdate(III) dihydrate.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, K(I) (4)[Mo(III)(CN)(7)]·2H(2)O, consists of one [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) anion, four K(+) cations, and two water mol-ecules. The [Mo(III)(CN)(7)](4-) anion has a seven-coordinated capped-trigonal-prismatic coordination geometry. The site-occupancy factors of the disordered water mol-ecules were set at 0.90, 0.60 and 0.50. The H-atom positions could not be determined for two of the water mol-ecules. The H atoms of the water with a site-occupancy factor of 0.90 were refined using O-H and H⋯H distance restraints.

Project description:In the polymeric title complex, [Pb(2)(CH(3)CO(2))(2)(C(10)H(6)O(6)S(2))](n), the acetate anion functions in a chelating mode and both O atoms also coordinate to adjacent Pb(II) atoms. The naphthalene-1,5-disulfonate dianion, which lies on a center of inversion, is connected to four Pb(II) atoms. The bridging modes of the monoanion and dianion give rise to a three-dimensional coordination polymer. The Pb(II) atom is eight-coordinate in the form of an undefined coordination polyhedron.

Triammonium hexa-hydroxidoocta-deca-oxidohexa-molybdogallate(III) hepta-hydrate.

Project description:The title compound, (NH(4))(3)[GaMo(6)(OH)(6)O(18)]·7H(2)O, contains two centrosymmetric GaMo(6) B-type Anderson cluster units consisting of central GaO(6) octa-hedra surrounded by a hexa-gonal assembly of MoO(6) edge-sharing octa-hedra. Like other B-type Anderson clusters, where the central Mo atom is substituted with a di- or trivalent metal ion, the central six μ(3)-oxido bridges are protonated. The average Ga-O bond length is 1.97 (1) Å, whereas the average Mo-O distances are 2.29 (2), 1.94 (1) and 1.709 (5) Å, respectively, for Mo-(μ(3)-OH), Mo-(μ(2)-O) and Mo=O bonds. In the crystal structure, the Ga(μ(3)-OH)(6)Mo(6)O(18) (3-) polyanionic clusters are surrounded by NH(4) (+) cations and solvent water mol-ecules, forming an extended network of hydrogen bonds.
