Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, C(12)H(17)N(3)O(2) (+)·ClO(4) (-), consists of 4,4,5,5-tetra-methyl-2-(4-pyridinio)imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide radical cations and perchlorate anions. Both the cation and the Cl atom of the anion are located on the same twofold rotation axis, and the crystal structure shows the average structure for the radical cation. The five-membered ring assumes a half-chair conformation. The cation links with the anion via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding.

The phenolic hy-droxy group forms an intra-molecular hydrogen bond to one of the two keto O atoms. The hy-droxy group of the N-bonded alkyl chain forms an inter-molecular hydrogen bond to the other keto O atom of an adjacent mol-ecule. The latter hydrogen bond leads to the formation of a helical chain running along the b axis.

In the imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide unit of the ligand, the four methyl groups and the C atoms to which they are bonded are disordered over two sets of sites, with a refined occupancy ratio of 0.737?(5):0.263?(5).
