ABSTRACT: In the mononuclear title complex, [Co(C(11)H(17)N(4)O(2))(2)(CH(3)OH)(2)](ClO(4))(2), the cobalt(II) atom lies on a symmetry centre and is coordinated by two O,N-bidentate ligands and two trans-arranged O atoms of the methanol mol-ecules in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry. In the crystal structure, cations and anions are linked by N-H?O and O-H?O hydrogen bonds into layers parallel to the bc plane.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, C(12)H(17)N(3)O(2) (+)·ClO(4) (-), consists of 4,4,5,5-tetra-methyl-2-(4-pyridinio)imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide radical cations and perchlorate anions. Both the cation and the Cl atom of the anion are located on the same twofold rotation axis, and the crystal structure shows the average structure for the radical cation. The five-membered ring assumes a half-chair conformation. The cation links with the anion via N-H?O hydrogen bonding.

The complex mol-ecule is centrosymmetric, so pairs of equivalent ligands lie trans to each other in a slightly distorted octa-hedral CoN(2)O(4) geometry. The Co(II) ion is coordinated by the pyridine N atoms from NITpPy ligands [NITpPy is 4,4,5,5-tetra-methyl-2-(pyridin-4-yl)imidazoline-1-oxyl 3-oxide), water O atoms and two monodentate benzoate O atoms. The complex mol-ecules are connected by O-H?O hydrogen bonds between water mol-ecules and benzoate ligands, forming chains parallel to [100]. ?-? stacking inter-actions between the benzoate ligands with centroid-centroid distances of 3.752?(2)?Å connect the chains into layers parallel to (10-1).
