Pd(0)/Au(I) redox incompatibilities as revealed by Pd-catalyzed homo-coupling of arylgold(I)-complexes.

ABSTRACT: A Pd(II)-catalyzed homo-coupling of Au(I)-aryls is reported. The reaction is driven by a Pd(0)/Au(I) redox reaction that generates a gold mirror and Pd(II), and illustrates one of the challenges for developing dual catalytic Au-Pd systems.

Project description:A direct reductive homo-coupling of alkyl tosylates has been developed by employing a combination of nickel and nucleophilic cobalt catalysts. A single-electron-transfer-type oxidative addition is a pivotal process in the well-established nickel-catalyzed coupling of alkyl halides. However, the method cannot be applied to the homo-coupling of ubiquitous alkyl tosylates due to the high-lying σ*(C-O) orbital of the tosylates. This paper describes a Ni/Co-catalyzed protocol for the activation of alkyl tosylates on the construction of alkyl dimers under mild conditions.

Pd-catalyzed enantioselective allyl-allyl cross-coupling.

Project description:The Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling of allylic carbonates and allylB(pin) is described. The regioselectivity of this reaction is sensitive to the bite angle of the ligand, with small-bite-angle ligands favoring the branched substitution product. This mode of regioselection is consistent with a reaction that operates by a 3,3' reductive elimination reaction. In the presence of appropriate chiral ligands, this reaction is rendered enantioselective and applies to both aromatic and aliphatic allylic carbonates.

Copper-catalyzed oxidative homo- and cross-coupling of Grignard reagents using diaziridinone.

Project description:Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are among the most powerful synthetic transformations. This paper describes an efficient copper-catalyzed homo- and cross-coupling of Grignard reagents with di-tert-butyldiaziridinone as oxidant under mild conditions, giving the coupling products in good to excellent yields. The reaction process has a broad substrate scope and is also effective for the C(sp)-C(sp(3)) coupling.

Novel NHC-Based Au(I) Complexes as Precursors of Highly Pure Au(0) Nuggets under Oxidative Conditions.

Project description:The Lewis-acidic character and robustness of NHC-Au(I) complexes enable them to catalyze a large number of reactions, and they are enthroned as the catalysts of choice for many transformations among polyunsaturated substrates. More recently, Au(I)/Au(III) catalysis has been explored either by utilizing external oxidants or by seeking oxidative addition processes with catalysts featuring pendant coordinating groups. Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based Au(I) complexes, with and without pendant coordinating groups, and their reactivity in the presence of different oxidants. We demonstrate that when using iodosylbenzene-type oxidants, the NHC ligand undergoes oxidation to afford the corresponding NHC=O azolone products concomitantly with quantitative gold recovery in the form of Au(0) nuggets ~0.5 mm in size. The latter were characterized by SEM and EDX-SEM showing purities above 90%. This study shows that NHC-Au complexes can follow decomposition pathways under certain experimental conditions, thus challenging the believed robustness of the NHC-Au bond and providing a novel methodology to produce Au(0) nuggets.

Project description:Pd(0)-catalyzed intermolecular arylation of sp(3) C-H bonds has been achieved using PR(3)/ArI. This protocol can be used to arylate a variety of aliphatic carboxylic acid derivatives, including a number of bioactive drug molecules. The use of fluorinated aryl iodides also allows for the introduction of fluorine into a molecule of interest.

Redox-Active Esters in Fe-Catalyzed C-C Coupling.

Project description:Cross-couplings of alkyl halides and organometallic species based on single electron transfer using Ni and Fe catalyst systems have been studied extensively, and separately, for decades. Here we demonstrate the first couplings of redox-active esters (both isolated and derived in situ from carboxylic acids) with organozinc and organomagnesium species using an Fe-based catalyst system originally developed for alkyl halides. This work is placed in context by showing a direct comparison with a Ni catalyst for >40 examples spanning a range of primary, secondary, and tertiary substrates. This new C-C coupling is scalable and sustainable, and it exhibits a number of clear advantages in several cases over its Ni-based counterpart.

Copper-Catalyzed Redox Coupling of Nitroarenes with Sodium Sulfinates.

Project description:A simple copper-catalyzed redox coupling of sodium sulfinates and nitroarenes is described. In this process, abundant and stable nitroarenes serve as both the nitrogen sources and oxidants, and sodium sulfinates act as both reactants and reductants. A variety of aromatic sulfonamides were obtained in moderate to good yields with broad substrate scope. No external additive is employed for this kind of transformation.
