Functionalized Cyclopropenes and Methylenecyclopropenes from Dianions of 3-Hydroxymethylcyclopropenes.

ABSTRACT: 1,2-Disubstituted-3-hydroxymethylcyclopropene derivatives have been synthesized by reacting the dianions of 1-alkyl-3-hydroxymethylcyclopropenes with a range of electrophiles. Additionally, a complementary procedure is described for one-pot sequential alkylation/rearrangement to provide a convenient synthesis of a chiral methylenecyclopropane directly from a 1-alkyl-3-hydroxymethylcyclopropene.

Project description:The synthesis of trifluoromethylated cyclopropenes is often associated with important applications in drug discovery and functional materials. In this report, we describe the use of readily available chiral rhodium(II) catalysts for a highly efficient asymmetric cyclopropenation reaction of fluorinated donor-acceptor diazoalkanes with a broad variety of aliphatic and aromatic alkynes. Further studies highlight the unique reactivity of fluorinated donor-acceptor diazoalkanes in the synthesis of oligo-cyclopropenes. Subsequent C-H functionalization of trifluoromethyl cyclopropenes furnishes densely substituted cyclopropene frameworks and also allows the alternative synthesis of bis-cyclopropenes.

Project description:We report herein an easy, mild, and robust Pd-catalyzed enantioselective hydroalkynylation reaction of achiral cyclopropenes. Commercially available Pd(acac)2 and (R)-DM-BINAP proved to be the best combination to reach high diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

Hexahalodiborate Dianions: A New Family of Binary Boron Halides.

Project description:The electron-precise binary boron subhalide species [B2 X6 ]2- X=F, Br, I) were synthesized and their structures confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The existence of the previously claimed [B2 Cl6 ]2- , which had been questioned, was also confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The dianions are isoelectronic to hexahaloethanes, are subhalide analogues of the well-known tetrahaloborate anions (BX4 - ), and are rare examples of molecular electron-precise binary boron species beyond B2 X4 , BX3 , and [BX4 ]- .

Guanosine Dianions Hydrated by One to Four Water Molecules.

Project description:Intermolecular interactions such as those present in molecule···water complexes may profoundly influence the physicochemical properties of molecules. Here, we carried out an experimental-computational study on doubly deprotonated guanosine monophosphate···water clusters, [dGMP - 2H]2-·nH2O (n = 1-4), using a combination of negative anion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) with molecular dynamics (MD) and quantum chemical (QM) calculations. Successive addition of water molecules to [dGMP - 2H]2- increases the experimental adiabatic detachment (ADE) and vertical detachment energy (VDE) by 0.5-0.1 eV, depending on the cluster size. In order to choose the representative conformations, we combined MD simulations with a clustering procedure to identify low energy geometries for which ADEs and VDEs were computed at the CAM-B3LYP/6-31++G(d,p) level. Our results demonstrate that the assumed approach leads to sound geometries and energetics of the studied microsolvates since the calculated ADEs and VDEs are in pretty good agreement with the experimental characteristics. The evolution of hydrogen bonding with cluster size indicates the possibility of the occurrence of proton transfer for clusters comprising a larger number of water molecules.

Selectivity in C-alkylation of dianions of protected 6-methyluridine.

Project description:A regioselective synthesis of 6-?-alkenyluridines 3, precursors of potent antiviral and antitumor cyclonucleosides 5, is described. While ?-alkenyl halides do not alkylate 6-lithiouridine, compounds 3 were prepared in a regioselective manner by sequential treatment of 6-methyluridine 2 with LTMP or LDA (4 equiv) in THF at -30 °C followed by alkylation with ?-alkenyl bromides.

Isomerism and Biradical Character of Tetrapnictide Dianions: A Computational Study.

Project description:We present a computational study on tetrapnictide dianions Pn 4 2- (Pn = P, As, Sb, Bi), using density functional theory (DFT), coupled-cluster [DLPNO-CCSD(T)] and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methods. Environmental effects such as solvation and coordination of counterions are included. The calculations reveal that out of three isomers (square-planar, butterfly and capped-triangle), the square planar isomers are generally the most stable. The counterion (Li+ and Mg2+) used in the calculations have a substantial effect on the relative stabilities. The square planar isomers show considerable biradical character. Calculated reactions toward alkenes indicate that this unusual electronic structure has significant implications on the reactivity of the Pn 4 2- dianions.

Finally a preliminary enantioselective variant could be established employing a recently described P-stereogenic xantphos derivative as ligand.

Gold-Catalyzed Intramolecular Cyclizations of Cyclopropenes with Propargylic Esters.

Project description:Homogeneous gold catalysts are interesting as they can act as potent carbophilic Lewis acids to activate the ? bonds of alkynes, allenes, and alkenes. Many impressive applications for the formation of C-C or C-heteroatom bonds have been found due to the excellent functional group compatibility of these catalysts and the air and moisture tolerance of their reactions. Here, we have developed gold-catalyzed novel intramolecular cycloisomerizations of nitrogen or oxygen-tethered cyclopropenes with propargylic esters. The reaction proceeded through different pathways according to different substituent styles, affording 5-azaspiro[2.5]oct-7-enes and bicyclo[4.1.0]heptanes.
