Muramyl dipeptide (MDP), a product of bacterial cell-wall peptidoglycan, activates innate immune cells by stimulating nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing 2 (NOD2) -dependent activation of the transcription factor NFkappaB and transcription of proinflammatory genes.
