Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H iodination using molecular I2 as the sole oxidant.

ABSTRACT: Pd-catalyzed ortho-C-H iodination directed by a weakly coordinating amide auxiliary using I2 as the sole oxidant was developed. This reaction is compatible with a wide range of heterocycles including pyridines, imidazoles, oxazoles, thiazoles, isoxazoles, and pyrazoles.

Project description:Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H lactonization of o-methyl benzoic acid substrates has been achieved using molecular oxygen as the oxidant. This finding provides a rare example of C-H oxygenation through Pd(II)/Pd(0) catalysis as well as a method to construct biologically important benzolactone scaffolds. The use of a gas mixture of 5% oxygen in nitrogen demonstrated the possibility for its application in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Ligand-Enabled Pd(II)-Catalyzed Bromination and Iodination of C(sp3)-H Bonds.

Project description:We herein report the palladium(II)-catalyzed bromination and iodination of a variety of ?-hydrogen-containing carboxylic acid and amino acid-derived amides. These reactions are exclusively enabled by quinoline-type ligands. The halogenated products obtained in this reaction are highly versatile and rapidly undergo further diversification. Further, we report the first example of a free carboxylic acid-directed Pd(II)-catalyzed C(sp3)-H bromination, enabled by quinoline ligands.

The mechanism of directed Ni(ii)-catalyzed C-H iodination with molecular iodine.

Project description:The density functional theory method is used to elucidate the elementary steps of Ni(ii)-catalyzed C(sp2)-H iodination with I2 and substrates bearing N,N'-bidentate directing centers, amide-oxazoline (AO) and 8-aminoquinoline (AQ). The relative stability of the lowest energy high- and low-spin electronic states of the catalyst and intermediates is found to be an important factor for all of the steps in the reaction. As a result, two-state reactivity for these systems is reported, where the reaction is initiated on the triplet surface and generates a high energy singlet nickelacycle. It is shown that the addition of Na2CO3 base to the reaction mixture facilitates C-H activation. The presence of I2 in the reaction provides the much needed driving force for the C-H activation and nickelacycle formation and ultimately reacts to form a new C-I bond through either a redox neutral electrophilic cleavage (EC) pathway or a one-electron reductive cleavage (REC) pathway. The previously proposed Ni(ii)/Ni(iv) and homolytic cleavage pathways are found to be higher in energy. The nature of the substrate is found to have a large impact on the relative stability of the lowest electronic states and on the stability of the nickelacycle resulting from C-H activation.

Project description:We describe the oxygenation of tertiary arylamines, and the amination of tertiary arylamines and phenols. The key step of these coupling reactions is an iron-catalyzed oxidative C-O or C-N bond formation which generally provides the corresponding products in high yields and with excellent regioselectivity. The transformations are accomplished using hexadecafluorophthalocyanine-iron(II) (FePcF16 ) as catalyst in the presence of an acid or a base additive and require only ambient air as sole oxidant.

Mechanistic studies provided evidence for the fast intramolecular aza-Michael reaction and aerobic reoxidation of Rh(I)/Rh(III), facilitated by the addition of quaternary ammonium salt.
