Tailoring the oxidation state of cobalt through halide functionality in sol-gel silica.

ABSTRACT: The functionality or oxidation state of cobalt within a silica matrix can be tailored through the use of cationic surfactants and their halide counter ions during the sol-gel synthesis. Simply by adding surfactant we could significantly increase the amount of cobalt existing as Co3O4 within the silica from 44% to 77%, without varying the cobalt precursor concentration. However, once the surfactant to cobalt ratio exceeded 1, further addition resulted in an inhibitory mechanism whereby the altered pyrolysis of the surfactant decreased Co3O4 production. These findings have significant implications for the production of cobalt/silica composites where maximizing the functional Co3O4 phase remains the goal for a broad range of catalytic, sensing and materials applications.

Experimental data of inorganic gel based smart window using silica sol-gel process.

Project description:In this article experimental data are presented for inorganic gel based smart window fabricated using silica sol-gel process. Parallel beam transmittances were measured as functions of voltages for samples fabricated with different concentrations of nitric acid. Spectroscopic transmittance data at different driving voltages for samples fabricated with different LC concentrations are shown. Transmittance spectra of the Si-Ti based gel-based-liquid-crystal (GDLC) device measured as different driving voltages were compared with those of PDLC. GDLC showed much lower operating voltages, 10-15 V, for on-state. Formation of the LC droplet in gelation process is illustrated. The methyl organic group surrounds LC droplets. Demonstration of GDLC based smart window showed the successful operation with low driving voltages. GDLC window shows clear color, even at off-state, compared with PDLC.

Tailoring p-Type Behavior in ZnO Quantum Dots through Enhanced Sol-Gel Synthesis: Mechanistic Insights into Zinc Vacancies.

Project description:The synthesis and control of properties of p-type ZnO is crucial for a variety of optoelectronic and spintronic applications; however, it remains challenging due to the control of intrinsic midgap (defect) states. In this study, we demonstrate a synthetic route to yield colloidal ZnO quantum dots (QD) via an enhanced sol-gel process that effectively eliminates the residual intermediate reaction molecules, which would otherwise weaken the excitonic emission. This process supports the creation of ZnO with p-type properties or compensation of inherited n-type defects, primarily due to zinc vacancies under oxygen-rich conditions. The in-depth analysis of carrier recombination in the midgap across several time scales reveals microsecond carrier lifetimes at room temperature which are expected to occur via zinc vacancy defects, supporting the promoted p-type character of the synthesized ZnO QDs.

Fast nucleation for silica nanoparticle synthesis using a sol-gel method.

Project description:We have developed a method that for the first time allowed us to synthesize silica particles in 20 minutes using a sol-gel preparation. Therefore, it is critically important to understand the synthesis mechanism and kinetic behavior in order to achieve a higher degree of fine tuning ability during the synthesis. In this study, we have employed our ability to modulate the physical nature of the reaction medium from sol-gel to emulsion, which has allowed us to halt the reaction at a particular time; this has allowed us to precisely understand the mechanism and chemistry of the silica polymerization. The synthesis medium is kept quite simple with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor in an equi-volumetric ethanol-water system and with sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. Synthesis is performed under ambient conditions at 20 °C for 20 minutes followed by phasing out of any unreacted TEOS and polysilicic acid chains via their emulsification with supersaturated water. We have also demonstrated that the developed particles with various sizes can be used as seeds for further particle growth and other applications. Luminol, a chemiluminescent molecule, has been entrapped successfully between the layers of silica and was demonstrated for the chemiluminescence of these particles.

Affinity of Electrochemically Deposited Sol⁻Gel Silica Films towards Catecholamine Neurotransmitters.

Project description:Dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine neurotransmitters can be detected by electrochemical oxidation in conventional electrodes. However, their similar chemical structure and electrochemical behavior makes a difficult selective analysis. In the present work, glassy carbon electrodes have been modified with silica layers, which were prepared by electroassisted deposition of sol⁻gel precursors. These layers were morphologically and compositionally characterized using different techniques, such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), TEM, FTIR, or thermogravimetric analysis⁻mass spectrometry (TG-MS). The affinity of silica for neurotransmitters was evaluated, exclusively, by means of electrochemical methods. It was demonstrated that silica adsorbs dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, showing different interaction with silica pores. The adsorption process is dominated by a hydrogen bond between silanol groups located at the silica surface and the amine groups of neurotransmitters. Because of the different interaction with neurotransmitters, electrodes modified with silica films could be used in electrochemical sensors for the selective detection of such molecules.

Functionalizing silica sol-gel with entrapped plant virus-based immunosorbent nanoparticles.

Project description:Advancements in understanding and engineering of virus-based nanomaterials (VBNs) for biomedical applications motivate a need to explore the interfaces between VBNs and other biomedically-relevant chemistries and materials. While several strategies have been used to investigate some of these interfaces with promising initial results, including VBN-containing slow-release implants and VBN-activated bioceramic bone scaffolds, there remains a need to establish VBN-immobilized three dimensional materials that exhibit improved stability and diffusion characteristics for biosensing and other analyte-capture applications. Silica sol-gel chemistries have been researched for biomedical applications over several decades and are well understood; various cellular organisms and biomolecules (e.g., bacteria, algae, enzymes) have been immobilized in silica sol-gels to improve viability, activity, and form factor (i.e., ease of use). Here we present the immobilization of an antibody-binding VBN in silica sol-gel by pore confinement. We have shown that the resulting system is sufficiently diffuse to allow antibodies to migrate in and out of the matrix. We also show that the immobilized VBN is capable of antibody binding and elution functionality under different buffer conditions for multiple use cycles. The promising results of the VBN and silica sol-gel interface indicate a general applicability for VBN-based bioseparations and biosensing applications.

Effect of Adding Bentonite to Porous Silica via the Sol-Gel Method.

Project description:The control of specific surface area and pore size of porous materials is essential for applications such as optics, medicine, and food technology. Here, the interspace between nanomaterials such as nanoparticles and nanosheets was studied. Nanoparticle-nanosheet interspaces were formed by incorporating bentonite nanosheets to the preparation of porous silica by the sol-gel method. The product had micropore and mesopores, which originated from internanoparticle space and nanoparticle-nanosheet spaces, respectively. These two types of pores had not only different sizes but also different aspect ratios. Time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance evaluation of the bentonite dispersion revealed that the dispersion state of bentonite in water prior to composite fabrication affected the formation of the pore structure. The pore size distribution could be easily changed by adding two-dimensional and flexible nanosheets owing to the change in the physical properties of the product. The silica-bentonite composite had a significantly larger specific surface area and pore volume than porous silica without bentonite. Water vapor adsorption measurements showed that the composite exhibited a larger maximum adsorption in comparison to porous silica. Therefore, a large improvement in the physical properties can be achieved by combining nanomaterials with different geometries.

Multi-Functional Luminescent Coating for Wood Fabric Based on Silica Sol-Gel Approach.

Project description:Environmentally friendly protection coatings have obtained increasing attention for their use in wooden materials, which can be destroyed easily when exposed to outdoor environments. A series of silane sol coatings coordinated with Eu3+ was prepared by hydrolyzing silane compounds. The obtained luminescent coating with three-dimensional net structure showed excellent optical, anti-ultraviolet aging, and thermal stability. The hybrid silane-modified compound coating was well-distributed on the wood by Si-O bonds to prevent its removal. The compound coating could stave off the decomposition of wood by converting ultraviolet light into red light and a charring action can endow the wood with thermal stability at high temperature, demonstrating the improvement of fire resistance and radiation residence following prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light, proving its excellent anti-ultraviolet aging properties.

Sol-Gel-Controlled Size and Morphology of Mesoporous Silica Microspheres Using Hard Templates.

Project description:Mesoporous silica microspheres (MPSMs) represent a promising material as a stationary phase for HPLC separations. The use of hard templates provides a preparation strategy for producing such monodisperse silica microspheres. Here, 15 MPSMs were systematically synthesized by varying the sol-gel reaction parameters of water-to-precursor ratio and ammonia concentration in the presence of a porous p(GMA-co-EDMA) polymeric hard template. Changing the sol-gel process factors resulted in a wide range of MPSMs with varying particle sizes from smaller than one to several micrometers. The application of response surface methodology allowed to derive quantitative predictive models based on the process factor effects on particle size, pore size, pore volume, and specific surface area of the MPSMs. A narrow size distribution of the silica particles was maintained over the entire experimental space. Two larger-scale batches of MPSMs were prepared, and the particles were functionalized with trimethoxy(octadecyl) silane for the application as stationary phase in reversed-phases liquid chromatography. The separation of proteins and amino acids was successfully accomplished, and the effect of the pore properties of the silica particles on separation was demonstrated.

Electroassisted Incorporation of Ferrocene within Sol-Gel Silica Films to Enhance Electron Transfer.

Project description:The sol-gel method is a straightforward technique that allows electrode modification with silica thin films. Furthermore, the silica pores could be functionalized to enhance the electrical conductivity and reactivity of the silica films. In this context, silica thin films were functionalized with ferrocene species. This functionalization was performed by electroassisted accumulation, generating a micro-structured composite electrode (Fc@SiO2 electrode). These modified electrodes were characterized by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods, pointing out that ferrocene species were confined with high stability within the microporous silica thin film, demonstrating the good adsorption capacity of the silica. While the spectroelectrochemical characterization indicates that only a fraction of the confined species within the silica films were electroactive, the electrochemical results demonstrate that the Fc@SiO2 film enhances the electrochemical response of cytochrome c in a solution, which gives rise to further applications of these films for redox-controlled release and electrochemical detection of other redox-active proteins.

Ternary Phase-Separation Investigation of Sol-Gel Derived Silica from Ethyl Silicate 40.

Project description:A ternary phase-separation investigation of the ethyl silicate 40 (ES40) sol-gel process was conducted using ethanol and water as the solvent and hydrolysing agent, respectively. This oligomeric silica precursor underwent various degrees of phase separation behaviour in solution during the sol-gel reactions as a function of temperature and H2O/Si ratios. The solution composition within the immiscible region of the ES40 phase-separated system shows that the hydrolysis and condensation reactions decreased with decreasing reaction temperature. A mesoporous structure was obtained at low temperature due to weak drying forces from slow solvent evaporation on one hand and formation of unreacted ES40 cages in the other, which reduced network shrinkage and produced larger pores. This was attributed to the concentration of the reactive sites around the phase-separated interface, which enhanced the condensation and crosslinking. Contrary to dense silica structures obtained from sol-gel reactions in the miscible region, higher microporosity was produced via a phase-separated sol-gel system by using high H2O/Si ratios. This tailoring process facilitated further condensation reactions and crosslinking of silica chains, which coupled with stiffening of the network, made it more resistant to compression and densification.
