Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Gold Nanobelts.

ABSTRACT: Gold nanobelts were synthesized by the reduction of tetrachloroauric acid with ascorbic acid in the presence of the surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecylsulfate. The resulting structures have rectangular cross sectional dimensions that are tens of nanometers and lengths that are tens to hundreds of micrometers. We find that the nanobelt yield and resulting structures are very sensitive to temperature which is likely due to the transition of the surfactant solution from wormlike micelles to spherical micelles. The nanobelt crystal structure contains a mixture of face centered cubic and hexagonally close packed lattice phases that can be isolated and examined individually due to the unique nanobelt size and shape.

Simple fabrication of gold nanobelts and patterns.

Project description:Gold nanobelts are of interest in several areas; however, there are only few methods available to produce these belts. We report here on a simple evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method to produce porous gold nanobelts with dimensions that scale across nanometer (thickness ?80 nm) and micrometer (width ?20 µm), to decimeter (length ?0.15 m). The gold nanobelts are well packed on the beaker wall and can be easily made to float on the surface of the solution for depositing onto other substrates. Microscopy showed that gold nanobelts had a different structure on the two sides of the belt; the density of gold nanowires on one side was greater than on the other side. Electrical measurements showed that these nanobelts were sensitive to compressive or tensile forces, indicating a potential use as a strain sensor. The patterned nanobelts were further used as a template to grow ZnO nanowires for potential use in applications such as piezo-electronics.

Synthesis of cycloiptycenes from carbon nanobelts.

Project description:The synthesis of each of the cycloiptycene derivatives was achieved in one step from the (6,6)carbon nanobelt. It was revealed that the carbon nanobelt reacted as a diene in the Diels-Alder reaction with arynes and alkynes. The structures of all products were identified by X-ray crystallography to confirm that the Diels-Alder reactions took place at the six central benzene rings of the carbon nanobelt. DFT calculations indicated that the release of strain energy is the driving force to promote the Diels-Alder reaction. By using this method, we have successfully synthesized cyclotetracosiptycene, the largest iptycene ever synthesized.

High-resolution crystal structure of a 20 kDa superfluorinated gold nanocluster.

Project description:Crystallization of atomically precise nanoclusters is gaining increasing attention, due to the opportunity of elucidating both intracluster and intercluster packing modes, and exploiting the functionality of the resulting highly pure crystallized materials. Herein, we report the design and single-crystal X-ray structure of a superfluorinated 20 kDa gold nanocluster, with an Au25 core coated by a shell of multi-branched highly fluorinated thiols (SF27) resulting in almost 500 fluorine atoms, i.e., ([Au25(SF27)18]0). The cluster shows a switchable solubility in the fluorous phase. X-ray analysis and computational studies reveal the key role of both intracluster and intercluster F···F contacts in driving [Au25(SF27)18]0 crystal packing and stabilization, highlighting the ability of multi-branched fluorinated thiols to endow atomically precise nanoclusters with remarkable crystallogenic behavior.

RbZnFe(PO4)2: synthesis and crystal structure.

Project description:A new iron phosphate, rubidium zinc iron(III) phosphate, RbZnFe(PO4)2, has been synthesized as single crystals by the flux method. This compound is isostructural to the previously reported KCoAl(PO4)2 [Chen et al. (1997 ▸). Acta Cryst. C53,1754-1756]. Its structure consists of a three-dimensional framework built up from corner-sharing PO4 and (Zn,Fe)O4 tetra-hedra. This mode of linkage forms channels parallel to the [100], [010] and [001] directions in which the Rb(+) ions are located.

Synthesis and crystal structure of (±)-Goniotamirenone C.

Project description:The structure of the racemic version of the natural product Goniotamirenone C [racemic anti-6-(2-chloro-1-hy-droxy-2-phenyl-eth-yl)-2H-pyran-2-one, C13H11ClO3] at 150 K is reported. The compound crystallizes with monoclinic (P21/n) symmetry and with Z' = 2. One independent mol-ecule is ordered while the other independent mol-ecule exhibits an inter-esting whole-mol-ecule enanti-omeric disorder with occupancies of 0.846 (4) and 0.154 (4). The independent mol-ecules are hydrogen bonded with -OH⋯O=C linkages into chains that run parallel to the a axis. This structural analysis corrects our previous assignment as the syn isomer [Meesakul et al. (2020 ▸). Phytochemistry, 171, 112248-112255].

Project description:A multidrug crystal based on drug combinations was synthesized by the solvent evaporation method. This multicomponent crystal consisted of antidiabetic drugs Glimepiride (Gli) and Metformin (Met), which was performed by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The results showed an enhancement of the pharmaceutical properties such as lower hygroscopicity and greater accelerated stability than the parent drug Met, and a higher solubility and dissolution rate than Gli.

High-pressure synthesis and crystal structure of SrGa4As4.

Project description:Strontium tetra-gallate(II,III) tetra-arsenide, SrGa4As4, was synthesized in a Walker-type multianvil apparatus under high-pressure/high-temperature conditions of 8 GPa and 1573 K. The com-pound crystallizes in a new structure type (P3221, Z = 3) as a three-dimensional (3D) framework of corner-sharing SrAs8 quadratic anti-prisms with strontium situated on a twofold rotation axis (Wyckoff position 3b). This arrangement is surrounded by a 3D framework which can be described as alternately stacked layers of either condensed GaIIIAs4 tetra-hedra or honeycomb-like layers built up from distorted ethane-like GaII 2As6 units com-prising Ga-Ga bonds.

Synthesis and crystal structure of NaCuIn(PO4)2.

Project description:Single crystals of sodium copper(II) indium bis-[phosphate(V)], NaCuIn(PO4)2, were grown from the melt under atmospheric conditions. The title phosphate crystallizes in the space group P21/n and is isotypic with KCuFe(PO4)2. In the crystal, two [CuO5] trigonal bipyramids share an edge to form a dimer [Cu2O8] that is connected to two PO4 tetra-hedra. The obtained [Cu2P2O12] units are inter-connected through vertices to form sheets that are sandwiched between undulating layers resulting from the junction of PO4 tetra-hedra and [InO6] octa-hedra. The two types of layers are alternately stacked along [101] and are joined into a three-dimensional framework through vertex- and edge-sharing, leaving channels parallel to the stacking direction. The channels host the sodium cations that are surrounded by four oxygen atoms in form of a distorted disphenoid.

Synthesis and crystal structure of NaMgFe(MoO4)3.

Project description:The iron molybdate NaMgFe(MoO4)3 {sodium magnesium iron(III) tris-[molybdate(VI)]} has been synthesized by the flux method. This compound is isostructural with α-NaFe2(MoO4)3 and crystallizes in the triclinic space group P-1. Its structure is built up from [Mg,Fe]2O10 units of edge-sharing [Mg,Fe]O6 octa-hedra which are linked to each other through the common corners of [MoO4] tetra-hedra. The resulting anionic three-dimensional framework leads to the formation of channels along the [101] direction in which the Na(+) cations are located.

Synthesis and crystal structure of ABW-type SrFe1.40V0.60O4.

Project description:Single crystals of SrFe1.40V0.60O4, strontium tetra-oxidodi[ferrate(III)/vanad-ate(III)], have been obtained as a side product in the course of sinter experiments aimed at the synthesis of double perovskites in the system SrO-Fe2O3-V2O5. The crystal structure can be characterized by layers of six-membered rings of TO4-tetra-hedra (T: FeIII, VIII) perpendicular to [100]. Stacking of the layers along [100] results in a three-dimensional framework enclosing tunnel-like cavities in which SrII cations are incorporated for charge compensation. The sequence of directedness of up (U) and down (D) pointing vertices of neighboring tetra-hedra in a single six-membered ring is UUUDDD. The topology of the tetra-hedral framework belongs to the zeolite-type ABW.
