Synthesis and optoelectronic properties of 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine scaffolds.

ABSTRACT: A series of sixteen bisphenylureas based on a 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine scaffold have been synthesized for use as potential anion sensors. Prior work with one of these receptors revealed a distinct fluorescence response in the presence of a suitable anion source with specificity towards chloride anion. This study demonstrates that the fluorescent properties of these receptors can be tuned through the systematic variation of the pendant functional groups.

Anion-directed self-assembly of a 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine bis(amide) scaffold.

Project description:Bis(sulfonamide) receptors based on the 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine scaffold form persistent dimers with water and halides in solution and in the solid-state. The structurally related bis(amide) receptor derived from 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl chloride is a dimer in the solid-state with two HCl molecules directing the self-assembly. The 2+2 dimer, with a twisted "S"-shaped backbone, is held together by six hydrogen bonds. Dissolution of the (H2+·Cl- )2 adduct in CHCl3 results, however, in a monomeric structure. DOSY and 1H NMR experiments were used to identify the dominance of monomer in solution for both 2 and H2+·Cl- . The 'OFF-ON' fluorescence response of 2, 6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine is retained with amide arms.

Synthesis and solid-state structures of a macrocyclic receptor based on the 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine scaffold.

Project description:A fluorescent macrocyclic anion receptor based on the 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine scaffold has been synthesized to investigate the mechanism of fluorescence quenching in this class of compounds. X-ray crystallography reveals that the binding pocket of the receptor is a natural host to both H2O and HCl, accommodating either molecule in nearly identical environments. Our studies show that protonation, not collisional quenching, is responsible for the observed fluorescence quenching response.

Molecular Self Assembly: Solvent Guests Tune the Conformation of a Series of 2,6-Bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine-Based Ureas.

Project description:The conformations of 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine-based urea receptors were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods and revealed a rich conformational flexibility influenced by solvents. Whereas receptor L(1) in DMSO prefers an "S" conformation, receptor L(1) crystallizes in an "O" conformation from DMSO/CH(3)OH binary solvent system, and a "W" conformation in the ternary solvent mixture DMSO/toluene/1,4-dioxane. In the case of L(2), the molecule adopts an "S" conformation where water molecules are sandwiched between two molecules of L(2) to form a dimer. Similar to L(2), L(3) also forms a dimer where water molecules are sandwiched between L(3) molecules, which are capped with two molecules of DMSO. Such a capping DMSO solvate is lacking in the case of L(2). Taken together, these results demonstrate that the conformation of 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl) pyridine-based urea receptors can be dramatically manipulated and tuned by the choice of crystallization solvents.

Project description:In the title hydrated mol-ecular salt, (C(5)H(8)N(3))(2)[Zn(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(2)]·H(2)O, the Zn(II) atom is coordinated by two O,N,O'-tridentate pyridine-2,6-dicarboxyl-ate dianions, generating a slightly distorted trans-ZnN(2)O(4) octa-hedral coordination geometry for the metal ion. In the crystal, a network of O-H?O, N-H?O and C-H?O hydrogen bonds involving the cations, anions and water mol-ecules results in a three-dimensional network.

Project description:In the title mol-ecule, C7H7Br2N, the C-Br vectors of the bromo-methyl groups extend to opposite sides of the pyridine ring and are oriented nearly perpendicular to its plane. In the crystal, the mol-ecules related by a c-glide-plane operation are arranged into stacks along the c axis, with centroid-centroid distances between neighboring aromatic rings of 3.778?(2)?Å. A short Br?Br contact of 3.6025?(11)?Å is observed within a pair of inversion-related mol-ecules.

Project description:The title compound, (C(4)H(8)N(3)O)[Cr(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(2)]·C(7)H(5)NO(4)·6H(2)O, was obtained by the reaction of Cr(NO(3))(3)·9H(2)O with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (pydcH(2)) and creatinine (creat) in aqueous solution (molar ratio 1:2:2). The cation is a protonated creatinine (creatH(+)) while the anion is a bis-pydc(2-) Cr(III) complex. The Cr(III) is coordinated by four oxygen and two nitro-gen atoms of two (pydc)(2-) groups and has a disorted octa-hedral coordination environment. The structure also contains a neutral mol-ecule of pydcH(2) that is hydrogen bonded to the creatH(+) and six mol-ecules of water. Extensive inter-molecular inter-actions, including seventeen classical hydrogen bonds, two weak C-H?O bonds, and C-O?? stacking inter-actions, with O?centroid distances of 3.211?(13) and 3.300?(12)?Å, connect the various components in the crystal structure.

Project description:The title compound, C(29)H(35)N(3), is the product of the condensation reaction between 2,6-diacetyl-pyridine and 2,6-diethyl-aniline. In the mol-ecule, the pyridyl ring is coplanar with the imino functional groups [torsion angles in the range 177.1 (2)-179.9 (2)°. The two 2,6-diethyl-substituted benzene rings are approximately perpendicular to the ethyl-idenepyridine central core, the dihedral angles being 88.7 (1) and 88.4 (1)°, respectively.

Project description:The title compound, [Ni(H(2)O)(6)][Ni(3)(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(4)(H(2)O)(4)]·8H(2)O, was obtained by the reaction of nickel(II) nitrate hexa-hydrate with pyridine-2,6-dicarb-oxy-lic acid (pydcH(2)) and 1,10-phenanothroline (phen) in an aqueous solution. The latter ligand is not involved in formation of the title complex. There are three different Ni(II) atoms in the asymmetric unit, two of which are located on inversion centers, and thus the [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) cation and the trinuclear {[Ni(pydc)(2)](2)-?-Ni(H(2)O)(4)}(2-) anion are centrosymmetric. All Ni(II) atoms exhibit an octa-hedral coordination geometry. Various inter-actions, including numerous O-H?O and C-H?O hydrogen bonds and C-O?? stacking of the pyridine and carboxyl-ate groups [3.570?(1), 3.758?(1) and 3.609?(1)?Å], are observed in the crystal structure.

Synthesis and Anticancer Properties of Silver(I) Complexes Containing 2,6-Bis(substituted)pyridine Derivatives.

Project description:Several new 2,6-bis(substituted)pyridine ligands and 2,6-bis(substituted)pyridine Ag(I) nitrate complexes were synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. The newly synthesized ligands include pyridine-2,6-bis(3-oxopropanenitrile) (1), pyridine-2,6-bis(2-cyano-N-phenyl-3-oxopropanethioamide) (2), and pyridine-2,6-bis((E)-2-(2-phenylhydrazono)-3-oxopropanenitrile) (3). The newly synthesized ligands and silver(I) complexes were evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activity against four human cancer cell lines including hepatocellular carcinoma (HePG2), lung adenocarcinoma (A549), colon carcinoma (HT29), and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7). Most of the newly synthesized silver(I) complexes exhibited better activity than the ligands, and the results have been compared with doxorubicin as a reference drug.
