Synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of high-spin mononuclear iron(II) p-semiquinonate complexes.

ABSTRACT: Two mononuclear iron(II) p-semiquinonate (pSQ) complexes have been generated via one-electron reduction of precursor complexes containing a substituted 1,4-naphthoquinone ligand. Detailed spectroscopic and computational analysis confirmed the presence of a coordinated pSQ radical ferromagnetically coupled to the high-spin Fe(II) center. The complexes are intended to model electronic interactions between (semi)quinone and iron cofactors in biology.

Project description:Very few hydride complexes are known in which the metals have a high-spin electronic configuration. We describe the characterization of several high-spin iron(II) hydride/deuteride isotopologues and their exchange reactions with one another and with H2/D2. Though the hydride/deuteride signal is not observable in NMR spectra, the choice of isotope has an influence on the chemical shifts of distant protons in the dimers through the paramagnetic isotope effect on chemical shift. This provides the first way to monitor the exchange of H and D in the bridging positions of these hydride complexes. The rate of exchange depends on the size of the supporting ligand, and this is consistent with the idea that H2/D2 exchange into the hydrides occurs through the dimeric complexes rather than through a transient monomer. The understanding of H/D exchange mechanisms in these high-spin iron hydride complexes may be relevant to postulated nitrogenase mechanisms.

Synthesis, structural, and spectroscopic characterization and reactivities of mononuclear cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes.

Project description:Metal-dioxygen adducts are key intermediates detected in the catalytic cycles of dioxygen activation by metalloenzymes and biomimetic compounds. In this study, mononuclear cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes bearing tetraazamacrocyclic ligands, [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+) and [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+), were synthesized by reacting [Co(12-TMC)(CH(3)CN)](2+) and [Co(13-TMC)(CH(3)CN)](2+), respectively, with H(2)O(2) in the presence of triethylamine. The mononuclear cobalt(III)-peroxo intermediates were isolated and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography, and the structural and spectroscopic characterization demonstrated unambiguously that the peroxo ligand is bound in a side-on ?(2) fashion. The O-O bond stretching frequency of [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+) and [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+) was determined to be 902 cm(-1) by resonance Raman spectroscopy. The structural properties of the CoO(2) core in both complexes are nearly identical; the O-O bond distances of [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+) and [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+) were 1.4389(17) Å and 1.438(6) Å, respectively. The cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes showed reactivities in the oxidation of aldehydes and O(2)-transfer reactions. In the aldehyde oxidation reactions, the nucleophilic reactivity of the cobalt-peroxo complexes was significantly dependent on the ring size of the macrocyclic ligands, with the reactivity of [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+) > [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+). In the O(2)-transfer reactions, the cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes transferred the bound peroxo group to a manganese(II) complex, affording the corresponding cobalt(II) and manganese(III)-peroxo complexes. The reactivity of the cobalt-peroxo complexes in O(2)-transfer was also significantly dependent on the ring size of tetraazamacrocycles, and the reactivity order in the O(2)-transfer reactions was the same as that observed in the aldehyde oxidation reactions.

Synthesis and characterization of iron(II) quinaldate complexes.

Project description:Treatment of iron(II) chloride or iron(II) bromide with 2 equiv of sodium quinaldate (qn = quinaldate or C(10)H(6)NO(2)(-)) yields the coordinatively unsaturated mononuclear iron(II) quinaldate complexes Na[Fe(II)(qn)(2)Cl].DMF and Na[Fe(II)(qn)(2)Br].DMF (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), respectively. When a similar synthesis is carried out using iron(II) triflate, a solvent-derived linear triiron(II) complex, [Fe(II)(3)(qn)(6)(DMF)(2)], with two five-coordinate iron(II) centers and a single six-coordinate iron(II) center is obtained. Each of these species has been characterized using X-ray diffraction. The vibrational features of these complexes are consistent with the observed solid-state structures. Each of these compounds exhibits an iron(II)-to-quinaldate (pi*) charge-transfer band between 520 and 550 nm. These metal-to-ligand charge-transfer bands are sensitive to substitution of the quinaldates as well as alteration of the first coordination sphere ligands. However, the (1)H NMR spectra of these paramagnetic high-spin iron(II) complexes are not consistent with retention of the solid-state structures in a DMF solution. The chemical shifts, longitudinal relaxation times (T(1)), relative integrations, and substitution of the quinaldate ligands provide a means to fully assign the (1)H NMR spectra of the paramagnetic materials. These spectra are consistent with coordination equilibria between five- and six-coordinate species in a DMF solution. Electrochemical studies are reported to place these oxygen-sensitive compounds in a broader context with other iron(II) compounds. Iron complexes of bidentate quinoline-2-carboxylate-derived ligands are germane to metabolic pathways, environmental remediation, and catalytic applications.

Spectroscopic and computational studies of a series of high-spin Ni(II) thiolate complexes.

Project description:The electronic structures of a series of high-spin Ni(II)-thiolate complexes of the form [PhTt(tBu)]Ni(SR) (R = CPh(3), 2; C(6)F(5), 3; C(6)H(5), 4; PhTt(tBu) = phenyltris((tert-butylthio)methyl)borate) have been characterized using a combined spectroscopic and computational approach. Resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopic data reveal that the nu(Ni-SR) vibrational feature occurs between 404 and 436 cm(-1) in these species. The corresponding rR excitation profiles display a striking de-enhancement behavior because of interference effects involving energetically proximate electronic excited states. These data were analyzed in the framework of time-dependent Heller theory to obtain quantitative insight into excited state nuclear distortions. The electronic absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of 2-4 are characterized by numerous charge transfer (CT) transitions. The dominant absorption feature, which occurs at approximately 18,000 cm(-1) in all three complexes, is assigned as a thiolate-to-Ni CT transition involving molecular orbitals that are of pi-symmetry with respect to the Ni-S bond, reminiscent of the characteristic absorption feature of blue copper proteins. Density functional theory computational data provide molecular orbital descriptions for 2-4 and allow for detailed assignments of the key spectral features. A comparison of the results obtained in this study to those reported for similar Ni-thiolate species reveals that the supporting ligand plays a secondary role in determining the spectroscopic properties, as the electronic structure is primarily determined by the metal-thiolate bonding interaction.

Hydrogen bond mediated intermolecular magnetic coupling in mononuclear high spin iron(iii) Schiff base complexes: synthesis, structure and magnetic study with theoretical insight.

Project description:The crystal structure and magnetic properties of two mononuclear iron(iii) Schiff base complexes, [FeL1(NCS)2] (1), HL1 = 2-[1-[[2-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]ethyl]imino]ethyl]phenol and [FeL2(N3)Cl] (2), HL2 = 2-(-1-(2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylimino)ethyl)-4-methylphenol are reported. Each complex contains a Fe(iii) ion surrounded by a N3O Schiff base ligand and two NCS- ligands (in 1) or one N3 - and one Cl- ligands (in 2). The magnetic properties can be well reproduced with zero field splittings in the high spin S = 5/2 Fe(iii) ions and weak intermolecular Fe-Fe interactions mediated by hydrogen bonds. This intermolecular antiferromagnetic interaction has been validated by using DFT calculations in complex 2. Moreover, the interaction energies of the H-bonded dimers in both complexes have been estimated using DFT calculations and characterized using a combination of QTAIM and NCI plot computational tools. Complexes 1 and 2 constitute two rare examples of Fe(iii) complexes with magnetic interactions through H-bonds.

Mononuclear Perfluoroalkyl-Heterocyclic Complexes of Pd(II): Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity.

Project description:Two mononuclear Pd(II) complexes [PdCl2(pfptp)] (1) and [PdCl2(pfhtp)] (2), with ligands 2-(3-perfluoropropyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfptp) and 2-(3-perfluoroheptyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfhtp), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The two complexes showed a bidentate coordination of the ligand occurring through N atom of pyridine ring and N4 atom of 1,2,4-triazole. Both complexes showed antimicrobial activity when tested against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains.

Solvent-Induced Polymorphism of Iron(II) Spin Crossover Complexes.

Project description:Two new mononuclear iron(II) compounds (1) and (2) of the general formula [Fe(L)₂](BF₄)₂·nCH₃CN (L = 4-(2-bromoethyn-1-yl)-2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine, n = 1 for (1) and n = 2 for compound (2)), were synthesized. The room temperature crystallization afforded concomitant formation of two different solvent analogues: compound (1) exhibiting triclinic P-1 and compound (2) monoclinic C2/c symmetry. Single-crystal X-ray studies confirmed the presence of the LS (low-spin) state for both compounds at 180 K and of the HS (high-spin) state for compound (2) at 293 K, in full agreement with the magnetic investigations for both solvent polymorphs. Compound (1) exhibits spin transition above 293 K followed by subsequent solvent liberation, while the spin transition of (2) takes already place at 237 K. After complete solvent removal from the crystal lattice, compound (1d) (the desolvated polymorph derived from (1)) exhibits spin transition centered at 342 K accompanied by a thermal hysteresis loop, while the analogous compound (2d) (the desolvated derivate of compound (2)) remains blocked in the HS state over all the investigated temperature range.

Spin-crossover and high-spin iron(ii) complexes as chemical shift <sup>19</sup>F magnetic resonance thermometers.

Project description:The potential utility of paramagnetic transition metal complexes as chemical shift 19F magnetic resonance (MR) thermometers is demonstrated. Further, spin-crossover FeII complexes are shown to provide much higher temperature sensitivity than do the high-spin analogues, owing to the variation of spin state with temperature in the former complexes. This approach is illustrated through a series of FeII complexes supported by symmetrically and asymmetrically substituted 1,4,7-triazacyclononane ligand scaffolds bearing 3-fluoro-2-picolyl derivatives as pendent groups (L x ). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements, in conjunction with UV-vis and NMR data, show thermally-induced spin-crossover for [Fe(L1)]2+ in H2O, with T1/2 = 52(1) °C. Conversely, [Fe(L2)]2+ remains high-spin in the temperature range 4-61 °C. Variable-temperature 19F NMR spectra reveal the chemical shifts of the complexes to exhibit a linear temperature dependence, with the two peaks of the spin-crossover complex providing temperature sensitivities of +0.52(1) and +0.45(1) ppm per °C in H2O. These values represent more than two-fold higher sensitivity than that afforded by the high-spin analogue, and ca. 40-fold higher sensitivity than diamagnetic perfluorocarbon-based thermometers. Finally, these complexes exhibit excellent stability in a physiological environment, as evidenced by 19F NMR spectra collected in fetal bovine serum.

A Mononuclear Iron(II) Spin-Crossover Molecule Decorated by Photochromic Azobenzene Group.

Project description:Aiming at constructing photoresponsive spin crossover (SCO) behavior, herein we designed a new ligand Abtz (Abtz = (E)-N-(4-((E)-phenyldiazenyl)phenyl)-1-(thiazol-4-yl)methanimine) which was decorated by a photochromic azobenzene group. Based on this photochromic ligand, a mononuclear Fe(II) SCO molecule [Fe(Abtz)3](BF4)2·(EAC)2 (1, EAC = ethyl acetate) was successfully synthesized and showed a complete one-step SCO behavior. Under continuous UV light and blue-light exposure, the cis-trans photoisomerization of both ligand Abtz and compound 1 in the liquid phase was confirmed through UV-Vis spectra. Moreover, the 1H-NMR spectra of Abtz reveal a trans-cis conversion ratio of 37%. Although the UV-Vis spectra reveal the photochromic behavior for 1 in the solution phase, the SCO behavior in the liquid state is absent according to the variable-temperature Evans method, suggesting the possible decomposition. Moreover, in the solid state, the cis-trans photoisomerization of both Abtz and 1 was not observed, due to the steric hindrance.

Spin States, Bonding and Magnetism in Mixed-Valence Iron(0)-Iron(II) Complexes.

Project description:"Xenophilic" complexes offer metal-metal bonds between disparate metal sites, but the nature of the metal-metal bonding is often unclear. Here, we describe two novel complexes with unsupported Fe-Fe bonds, Lx Fe-Fp (LX = β-aldiminate or β-diketiminate; Fp = Fe(CO)2 Cp), that offer insight into Fe-Fe bonding. Mössbauer, magnetism, and DFT analysis indicate that the most accurate electronic structure description is LFeII ←Fe0 (CO)2 Cp, in which the Fe(CO)2 Cp is low-spin iron(0) and acts as an X-type ligand toward the high-spin iron(II) of the LFe fragment. This largely electrostatic interaction has a bond order of only 0.5. The three-coordinate high-spin iron(II) site has large zero-field splitting, and in addition its Mössbauer parameters can be used to rank the Fp- "metalloligand" as a donor; it is nearly as strong a donor as phosphides and alkyls.
