Robust tribo-mechanical and hot corrosion resistance of ultra-refractory Ta-Hf-C ternary alloy films.

ABSTRACT: In this work we report the hot corrosion properties of binary and ternary films of the Ta-Hf-C system in V₂O₅-Na₂SO₄ (50%wt.-50%wt.) molten salts at 700 °C deposited on AISI D3 steel substrates. Additionally, the mechanical and nanowear properties of the films were studied. The results show that the ternary alloys consist of solid solutions of the TaC and HfC binary carbides. The ternary alloy films have higher hardness and elastic recoveries, reaching 26.2 GPa and 87%, respectively, and lower nanowear when compared to the binary films. The corrosion rates of the ternary alloys have a superior behavior compared to the binary films, with corrosion rates as low as 0.058 μm/year. The combination and tunability of high hardness, elastic recovery, low nanowear and an excellent resistance to high temperature corrosion demonstrates the potential of the ternary Ta-Hf-C alloy films for applications in extreme conditions.

Effect of Ag alloying and trace precipitation on corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy.

Project description:This work systematically analysed the electrochemical and corrosion behaviour of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy samples in Hank's solution. For the samples with 1.5% and 3% Ag content, the sintering temperature increased from 750 to 950°C, and the corresponding corrosion resistance increased by 100 times due to the increased alloying of Ag; meanwhile for the sample with 4.5% Ag content, the sintering temperature increased from 750 to 950°C, and the corresponding corrosion resistance decreased by six times due to the increased precipitation of Ag. These tests prove that the Ag alloying is beneficial to the enhancement of the corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy, but the Ag trace precipitation has the opposite effect. A series of electrochemical characterizations and density functional theory calculations explain the mechanism of the above phenomenon. Ag alloying can promote the formation of uniform, complete, dense, stable and thick passivation layer on the surface of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy, which makes Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy uniformly corroded without pitting. In addition, Ag alloying can effectively reduce the contact resistance of the solid-liquid interface. However, the trace precipitation of Ag plays the opposite role to the above effect.

Ultra-small hollow ternary alloy nanoparticles for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:Hollow nanoparticles with large specific surface area and high atom utilization are promising catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We describe herein the design and synthesis of a series of ultra-small hollow ternary alloy nanostructures using a simple one-pot strategy. The same technique was demonstrated for hollow PtNiCu nanoparticles, hollow PtCoCu nanoparticles and hollow CuNiCo nanoparticles. During synthesis, the displacement reaction and oxidative etching played important roles in the formation of hollow structures. Moreover, our hollow PtNiCu and PtCoCu nanoparticles were single crystalline, with an average diameter of 5 nm. Impressively, ultra-small hollow PtNiCu nanoparticles, containing only 10% Pt, exhibited greater electrocatalytic HER activity and stability than a commercial Pt/C catalyst. The overpotential of hollow PtNiCu nanoparticles at 10 mA cm-2 was 28 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The mass activity was 4.54 A mgPt -1 at -70 mV versus RHE, which is 5.62-fold greater than that of a commercial Pt/C system (0.81 A mgPt -1). Through analyses of bonding and antibonding orbital filling, density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the bonding strength of different metals to the hydrogen intermediate (H*) was in the order of Pt > Co > Ni > Cu. The excellent HER performance of our hollow PtNiCu nanoparticles derives from moderately synergistic interactions between the three metals and H*. This work demonstrates a new strategy for the design of low-cost and high-activity HER catalysts.

Ultra-strong tungsten refractory high-entropy alloy via stepwise controllable coherent nanoprecipitations.

Project description:High-performance refractory alloys with ultrahigh strength and ductility are in demand for a wide range of critical applications, such as plasma-facing components. However, it remains challenging to increase the strength of these alloys without seriously compromising their tensile ductility. Here, we put forward a strategy to "defeat" this trade-off in tungsten refractory high-entropy alloys by stepwise controllable coherent nanoprecipitations (SCCPs). The coherent interfaces of SCCPs facilitate the dislocation transmission and relieve the stress concentrations that can lead to premature crack initiation. As a consequence, our alloy displays an ultrahigh strength of 2.15 GPa with a tensile ductility of 15% at ambient temperature, with a high yield strength of 1.05 GPa at 800 °C. The SCCPs design concept may afford a means to develop a wide range of ultrahigh-strength metallic materials by providing a pathway for alloy design.

Data on anti-corrosion characteristics of eco-friendly inhibitive extract on the hot corrosion degradation trend of A6063 aluminum alloy in 1.0 M HCl solution.

Project description:The study of Lasienthera africanum as corrosion inhibitor for A6063 grade aluminum alloy in 1.0 M HCl acid solution using weight loss method of corrosion study was investigated at 30 °C and 40 °C to check its degradation trend at high varying temperature application. The results revealed that L. africanum in 1.0 M acidic environment decreased the corrosion rate at various concentrations considered. Inhibitor efficiency (IE) as high as 98.7 and 94.9% both at 30 °C and 40 °C respectively, was observed.

Surface Characterization, Corrosion Resistance and in Vitro Biocompatibility of a New Ti-Hf-Mo-Sn Alloy.

Project description:A new superelastic Ti-23Hf-3Mo-4Sn biomedical alloy displaying a particularly large recovery strain was synthesized and characterized in this study. Its native passive film is very thick (18 nm) and contains very protective TiO2, Ti2O3, HfO2, MoO2, and SnO2 oxides (XPS analysis). This alloy revealed nobler electrochemical behavior, more favorable values of the corrosion parameters and open circuit potentials in simulated body fluid in comparison with commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V alloy taken as reference biomaterials in this study. This is due to the favorable influence of the alloying elements Hf, Sn, Mo, which enhance the protective properties of the native passive film on alloy surface. Impedance spectra showed a passive film with two layers, an inner, capacitive, barrier, dense layer and an outer, less insulating, porous layer that confer both high corrosion resistance and bioactivity to the alloy. In vitro tests were carried out in order to evaluate the response of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) to Ti-23Hf-3Mo-4Sn alloy in terms of cell viability, cell proliferation, phenotypic marker expression and nitric oxide release. The results indicate a similar level of cytocompatibility with HUVEC cells cultured on Ti-23Hf-3Mo-4Sn substrate and those cultured on the conventional CP-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V metallic materials.

Mitigation of Corrosion on Magnesium Alloy by Predesigned Surface Corrosion.

Project description:Rapid corrosion of magnesium alloys is undesirable in structural and biomedical applications and a general way to control corrosion is to form a surface barrier layer isolating the bulk materials from the external environment. Herein, based on the insights gained from the anticorrosion behavior of corrosion products, a special way to mitigate aqueous corrosion is described. The concept is based on pre-corrosion by a hydrothermal treatment of Al-enriched Mg alloys in water. A uniform surface composed of an inner compact layer and top Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) microsheet is produced on a large area using a one-step process and excellent corrosion resistance is achieved in saline solutions. Moreover, inspired by the super-hydrophobic phenomenon in nature such as the lotus leaves effect, the orientation of the top microsheet layer is tailored by adjusting the hydrothermal temperature, time, and pH to produce a water-repellent surface after modification with fluorinated silane. As a result of the trapped air pockets in the microstructure, the super-hydrophobic surface with the Cassie state shows better corrosion resistance in the immersion tests. The results reveal an economical and environmentally friendly means to control and use the pre-corrosion products on magnesium alloys.

On the Microstructure and Properties of Nb-Ti-Cr-Al-B-Si-X (X = Hf, Sn, Ta) Refractory Complex Concentrated Alloys.

Project description:We studied the effect of the addition of Hf, Sn, or Ta on the density, macrosegregation, microstructure, hardness and oxidation of three refractory metal intermetallic composites based on Nb (RM(Nb)ICs) that were also complex concentrated alloys (i.e., RM(Nb)ICs/RCCAs), namely, the alloys TT5, TT6, and TT7, which had the nominal compositions (at.%) Nb-24Ti-18Si-5Al-5B-5Cr-6Ta, Nb-24Ti-18Si-4Al-6B-5Cr-4Sn and Nb-24Ti-17Si-5Al-6B-5Cr-5Hf, respectively. The alloys were compared with B containing and B free RM(Nb)ICs. The macrosegregation of B, Ti, and Si was reduced with the addition, respectively of Hf, Sn or Ta, Sn or Ta, and Hf or Sn. All three alloys had densities less than 7 g/cm3. The alloy TT6 had the highest specific strength in the as cast and heat-treated conditions, which was also higher than that of RCCAs and refractory metal high entropy alloys (RHEAs). The bcc solid solution Nbss and the tetragonal T2 and hexagonal D88 silicides were stable in the alloys TT5 and TT7, whereas in TT6 the stable phases were the A15-Nb3Sn and the T2 and D88 silicides. All three alloys did not pest at 800 °C, where only the scale that was formed on TT5 spalled off. At 1200 °C, the scale of TT5 spalled off, but not the scales of TT6 and TT7. Compared with the B free alloys, the synergy of B with Ta was the least effective regarding oxidation at 800 and 1200 °C. Macrosegregation of solutes, the chemical composition of phases, the hardness of the Nbss and the alloys, and the oxidation of the alloys at 800 and 1200 °C were considered from the perspective of the Niobium Intermetallic Composite Elaboration (NICE) alloy design methodology. Relationships between properties and the parameters VEC, δ, and Δχ of alloy or phase and between parameters were discussed. The trends of parameters and the location of alloys and phases in parameter maps were in agreement with NICE.

The Effect of Scandium on the Structure, Microstructure and Superconductivity of Equimolar Sc-Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr Refractory High-Entropy Alloys.

Project description:In this study, we investigate the scandium-containing Sc-Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr system of refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Using the arc-melting method, we synthesized nine equimolar alloys (five 4-, three 5- and one 6-component), with all of them containing Sc. The alloys were characterized by XRD, electron microscopy and EDS, while superconductivity was investigated via electrical resistivity, specific heat and the Meissner effect. The results were compared to the parent Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr refractory HEAs, forming a single-phase body-centered cubic (bcc) structure and quite homogeneous microstructure. The addition of Sc produces a two-phase structure in the Sc-Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr alloys, with one phase being bcc and the other hexagonal close-packed (hcp). The hcp phase absorbs practically all Sc, whereas the Sc-poor bcc phase is identical to the bcc phase in the Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr parent system. Upon the Sc addition, the microstructure becomes very inhomogeneous. Large bcc dendrites (10-100 µm) are homogeneous in the central parts, but become a fine dispersion of sub-micron precipitates of the bcc and hcp phases close to the edges. The interdendritic regions are also a fine dispersion of the two phases. Superconductivity of the Sc-Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr alloys originates from the bcc phase fraction, which demonstrates identical superconducting parameters as the bcc Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr parent alloys, while the Sc-containing hcp phase fraction is non-superconducting.

Ternary Porphyrinato Hf(IV) and Zr(IV) - Polyoxometalate Complexes.

Project description:We report a facile, high yield synthesis and characterization of discrete, ternary porphyrin-metal-polyoxometalate (Por-M-POM) complexes where a group (IV) transition metal ion is bound both to the porphyrin core and to the lacunary site of a Keggin POM, PW(11)O(39) (-7). The remarkably robust complexes exploit the fact that Hf(IV) and Zr(IV) are 7-8 coordinate and reside outside the plane of the porphyrin macrocycle, thus enabling the simultaneous coordination to meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) or meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP) and to the defect site in the Keggin framework. The physical properties of the (TPP)Hf(PW(11)O(39))[TBA](5), (TPyP)Hf(PW(11)O(39))[TBA](5), and (TPP)Zr(PW(11)O(39))[TBA](5) complexes are similar because the metal ions have similar oxidation states, and coordination chemistry.This architecture couples the photonic properties of the porphyrin to the POM because the metal ion is incorporated into both frameworks. Thus the ternary complexes can serve as a basis for the characterization of Hf(IV) and Zr(IV) porphyrins bound to oxide surfaces via the group (IV) metal ions. The Hf(Por) and Zr(Por) bind strongly to TiO(2) nanoparticles and indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces, but significantly less binds to crystalline SiO(2) or TiO(2) surfaces. Together, the strong binding of the metalloporphyrins to the POM, nanoparticles, and the ITO surfaces, and paucity of binding to crystalline surfaces, suggests that the 3-4 open coordination sites on the Hf(Por) and Zr(Por) are predominantly bound at surface defect sites.

Corrosion Resistance of Heat-Treated Ni-W Alloy Coatings.

Project description:The paper presents research on evaluation of corrosion resistance of Ni-W alloy coatings subjected to heat treatment. The corrosion resistance was tested in 5% NaCl solution by the use of potentiodynamic polarization technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Characteristics of the Ni-W coatings after heat treatment were carried out using scanning electron microscopy, scanning Kelvin probe technique and X-ray diffraction. Suggested reasons for the improvement of properties of the heat treated Ni-W coating, obtained at the lowest current density value (125 mA?cm-2), are the highest tungsten content (c.a. 25 at.%) as well as the smallest and the most homogeneous electrochemically active surface area.
