Addition of aluminium, zinc and magnesium hydrides to rhodium(iii).

ABSTRACT: We report the addition of M-H bonds (M = Al, Zn, Mg) to a Rh(iii) intermediate generated from the reductive elimination of triethylsilane from [Cp*Rh(H)₂(SiEt₃)₂]. A series of new heterobimetallic complexes possessing Rh-M bonds have been isolated and characterised by a number of spectroscopic (¹H, ²⁹Si, ¹³C, ¹⁰³Rh NMR, infrared, and X-ray diffraction) and computational techniques (NBO and QTAIM analysis). Experimental and computational data are consistent with cleavage of the M-H bond upon addition to rhodium with formation of new Rh-M and Rh-H bonds. Upon photolysis the Al analogue of this series undergoes a further elimination reaction producing triethylsilane and a highly unusual Rh₂Al₂H₄ containing cluster proposed to contain an Al(i) bridging ligand.

Project description:The preparation and applications of heterobimetallic complexes continue to occupy researchers in the fields of organometallic, main group, and coordination chemistry. This interest stems from the promise these complexes hold as precursors to materials, reagents in synthesis and as new catalysis. Here we survey and organise the state-of-the-art understanding of the TM-H-M linkage (M = Mg, Zn, Al, Ga). We discuss the structure and bonding in these complexes, their known reactivity, and their largely unrealised potential in catalysis.

Synthesis and characterization of Magnesium-Iron-Cobalt complex hydrides.

Project description:The formation, structure and deuterium desorption properties of Mg2FexCo(1-x)Dy (0 ≤ x ≤ 1 and 5 ≤ y ≤ 6) complex hydrides were investigated. The synthesis was carried out by reactive ball milling, using a mixture of powders of the parent elements in D2 atmosphere. The formation of quaternary deuterides was identified from Rietveld refinements of powder X-Ray diffraction and powder neutron diffraction patterns, and from infrared attenuated total reflectance analysis. It was observed that the crystal structure of deuterides depends on the transition metal fraction. For Co-rich compositions, i.e. up to x = 0.1, hydrides have the tetragonal distorted CaF2-type structure (space group P4/nmm) of Mg2CoD5 at room temperature. For Fe-rich compositions, i.e. x ≥ 0.5, a cubic hydride is observed, with the same K2PtCl6-type structure (space group Fm[Formula: see text]m) as Mg2FeD6 and as Mg2CoD5 at high temperatures. For x = 0.3, both the cubic and the tetragonal deuterides are detected. Differential scanning calorimetry coupled with thermogravimetric and temperature programmed desorption analyses show rather similar deuterium desorption properties for all samples, without significant changes as a function of composition. Finally, hydrogen sorption experiments performed for Mg2Fe0.5Co0.5H5.5 at 30 bar of H2 and 673 K showed reversible reactions, with good kinetic for both absorption and desorption of hydrogen.

Rhodium(iii)-catalyzed synthesis of phthalides by cascade addition and cyclization of benzimidates with aldehydes.

Project description:We herein report the Rh(iii)-catalyzed C-H bond activation and addition of benzimidates to aldehydes to afford biologically important phthalides in a single step. The imidate is a novel and unexplored directing group that not only enables C-H bond activation and addition to aldehydes, but also serves to capture the reversibly formed alcohol intermediate. The reaction shows broad scope with a high level of functional group compatibility and is applicable to both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes.

Stereo-controlled anti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes by magnesium hydrides.

Project description:A concise protocol for anti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes was established using 1 : 1 molar combination of sodium hydride (NaH) and magnesium iodide (MgI2) without the aid of any transition metal catalysts. The resulting alkenylmagnesium intermediates could be trapped with a series of electrophiles, thus providing facile accesses to stereochemically well-defined functionalized alkenes. Mechanistic studies by experimental and theoretical approaches imply that polar hydride addition from magnesium hydride (MgH2) is responsible for the process.

Addition of arylstannanes to alkynes giving ortho-alkenylarylstannanes catalysed cooperatively by a rhodium complex and zinc chloride.

Project description:The reaction of arylstannanes ArSnR3 with unfunctionalised alkynes was found to proceed in the presence of a rhodium catalyst and a catalytic amount of zinc chloride to give ortho-alkenylarylstannanes with high selectivity in high yields. The catalytic cycle is very unique, consisting of three transmetalation steps, from Sn to Rh, Rh to Zn, and Zn to Sn, in addition to arylrhodation of alkyne followed by 1,4-migration of Rh from 2-arylalkenyl carbon to ortho-alkenylaryl carbon.

Hexaaqua-aluminium(III) tris-(methane-sulfonate).

Project description:The title compound, [Al(H(2)O)(6)](CH(3)SO(3))(3) (common name: aluminium methane-sulfonate hexa-hydrate), was crystallized from an aqueous solution prepared by the precipitation reaction of aluminium sulfate and barium methane-sulfonate. Its crystal structure is the first of the boron group methane-sulfonates to be determined. The characteristic building block is a centrosymmetric unit containing two hexa-aqua-aluminium cations that are connected to each other by two O atoms of the -SO(3) groups in an O-H?O?H-O sequence. Further O-H?O hydrogen bonding links these blocks in orthogonal directions - along [010] forming a double chain array, along [10-1] forming a layered arrangement of parallel chains and along [101] forming a three-dimensional network. As indicated by the O?O distances of 2.600?(3)-2.715?(3)?Å, the hydrogen bonds are from medium-strong to strong. A further structural feature is the arrangement of two and four methyl groups, respectively, establishing 'hydro-phobic islands' of different size, all positioned in a layer-like region perpendicular to [101]. The only other building block within this region is one of the -SO(3) groups giving a local connection between the hydro-philic structural regions on both sides of the 'hydro-phobic' one. Thermal analysis indicates that a stepwise dehydration process starts at about 413?K and proceeds via the respective penta- and dihydrate until the compound completely decomposes at about 688?K.

Stereo- and Regioselective Alkyne Hydrometallation with Gold(III) Hydrides.

Project description:The hydroauration of internal and terminal alkynes by gold(III) hydride complexes [(C^N^C)AuH] was found to be mediated by radicals and proceeds by an unexpected binuclear outer-sphere mechanism to cleanly form trans-insertion products. Radical precursors such as azobisisobutyronitrile lead to a drastic rate enhancement. DFT calculations support the proposed radical mechanism, with very low activation barriers, and rule out mononuclear mechanistic alternatives. These alkyne hydroaurations are highly regio- and stereospecific for the formation of Z-vinyl isomers, with Z/E ratios of >99:1 in most cases.

Contrasting growth responses to aluminium addition among populations of the aluminium accumulator Melastoma malabathricum.

Project description:Aluminium (Al) hyper-accumulation is a common trait expressed by tropical woody plants growing on acidic soils. Studies on Al accumulators have suggested that Al addition may enhance plant growth rates, but the functional significance of this trait and the mechanistic basis of the growth response are uncertain. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that differential growth responses to Al among populations of an Al accumulator species are associated with variation in biomass allocation and nutrient uptake. We conducted two experiments to test differential responses to the presence of Al in the growth medium for seedlings of the Al accumulator shrub Melastoma malabathricum collected from 18 populations across Peninsular Malaysia. Total dry mass and relative growth rate of dry mass were significantly greater for seedlings that had received Al in the growth medium than for control plants that did not receive Al, but growth declined in response to 5.0 mM Al addition. The increase in growth rate in response to Al addition was greater for a fast-growing than a slow-growing population. The increase in growth rate in response to Al addition occurred despite a reduction in dry mass allocation to leaves, at the expense of higher allocation to roots and stems, for plants grown with Al. Foliar concentrations of P, K, Mg and Ca increased in response to Al addition and the first axis of a PCA summarizing foliar nutrient concentrations among populations was correlated positively with seedling relative growth rates. Some populations of the Al hyper-accumulator M. malabathricum express a physiological response to Al addition which leads to a stimulation of growth up to an optimum value of Al in the growth medium, beyond which growth declines. This was associated with enhanced nutrient concentrations in leaves, which suggests that Al accumulation functions to optimize elemental stoichiometry and growth rate.

Exploring Equilibria between Aluminium(I) and Aluminium(III): The Formation of Dihydroalanes, Masked Dialumenes and Aluminium(I) Species.

Project description:The design of new reductive routes to low oxidation state aluminium (Al) compounds offers the opportunity to better understand redox processes at the metal centre and develop reactivity accordingly. Here, a monomeric AlI compound acts as a stoichiometric reducing agent towards a series of AlIII dihydrides, leading to the formation of new low oxidation state species including symmetric and asymmetric dihydrodialanes, and a masked dialumene. These compounds are formed by a series of equilibrium processes involving AlI , AlII and AlIII species and product formation can be manipulated by fine-tuning the reaction conditions. The transient formation of monomeric AlI compounds is proposed: this is shown to be energetically viable by computational (DFT) investigations and reactivity studies show support for the formation of AlI species. Importantly, despite the potential for the equilibrium mixtures to lead to ill-defined reactivity, controlled reactivity of these low oxidation state species is observed.

Triphen-yl(tetra-hydro-furan)-aluminium(III).

Project description:In the title compound, [Al(C(6)H(5))(3)(C(4)H(8)O)], the Al atom has a distorted tetra-hedral geometry. The C-Al-C angles range from 113.25 (7) to 116.27 (8)°, much larger than the O-Al-C angles, which range from 103.39 (7) to 103.90 (6)°. The tetra-hydro-furan ring adopts an envelope conformation. The crystal packing is stabilized by C-H⋯π inter-actions.
