Chemical reaction within a compact non-porous crystal containing molecular clusters without the loss of crystallinity.

ABSTRACT: The very rare occurrence of a gas-solid chemical reaction has been found to take place on a molecule within a compact non-porous crystal without destroying its long-range structural order and retaining similar crystal structures when yellow crystals of FeII4(mbm)₄Cl₄(MeOH)₄ were exposed to air to give black [FeIII4(mbm)₄Cl₄(OH)₄]·2H₂O. The latter cannot be synthesised directly. The original cluster underwent an exchange of methanol to hydroxide, an oxidation of Fe(ii) to Fe(iii), a change in stereochemistry and hydration while the packing and space-group remained unaltered.

Crystal structure of Sc1.91In1.39Mo15Se19, containing Mo6 and Mo9 clusters.

Project description:The structure of scandium indium penta-deca-molybdenum nona-deca-selenide, Sc1.91In1.39Mo15Se19, is isotypic with In2.9Mo15Se19 [Grüttner et al. (1979 ▸). Acta Cryst. B35, 285-292]. It is characterized by two cluster units Mo6Se (i) 8Se (a) 6 and Mo9Se (i) 11Se (a) 6 (where i represents inner and a apical atoms) that are present in a 1:1 ratio. The cluster units are centered at Wyckoff positions 2b and 2c and have point-group symmetry -3 and -6, respectively. The clusters are inter-connected through additional Mo-Se bonds. Sc-Se and In-Se bonds complete the structural set-up. In the title compound, the Sc(3+) cations replace the trivalent indium atoms present in In2.9Mo15Se19, and a deficiency is observed at the monovalent indium site. One Mo, one Se and the Sc atom are situated on mirror planes, whereas two other Se atoms and the In atom are situated on threefold rotation axes.

Impact of compact TiO2 interface modification on the crystallinity of perovskite solar cells.

Project description:The effect of TiO2 interfacial morphology on perovskite crystallinity was investigated by modifying the micro and nanoscale surface roughness of compact TiO2. While surface treatments of the compact TiO2 layer are recognized as effective strategies to enhance the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells, the discussion regarding the crystallinity of perovskite atop TiO2 has been limited. In this study, we explored the impact of micro and nano scale interface morphology on perovskite crystal formation and its subsequent effects on device performance. Surprisingly, despite the absence of noticeable voids at the interface between the compact TiO2 and perovskite layers, the perovskite crystal morphology exhibited significant improvement following either micro or nanoscale interfacial modification. This enhancement ultimately led to improved photoconversion efficiency and reduced I-V hysteresis. These results emphasize the importance of underlayer surface morphology in the perovskite crystallization and suggest that the presence of grain boundaries within the perovskite layer may also contribute to I-V hysteresis in perovskite solar cells.

The Gas-absorption/Chemical-reaction Method for Measuring Air-water Interfacial Area in Natural Porous Media.

Project description:The gas-absorption/chemical-reaction (GACR) method used in Chemical Engineering to quantify gas-liquid interfacial area in reactor systems is adapted for the first time to measure the effective air-water interfacial area of natural porous media. Experiments were conducted with the GACR method, and two standard methods (x-ray microtomographic imaging and interfacial partitioning tracer tests) for comparison, using model glass beads and a natural sand. The results of a series of experiments conducted under identical conditions demonstrated that the GACR method exhibited excellent repeatability for maintaining constant water saturation and for measurement of interfacial area (Aia). Coefficients of variation for Aia were 3.5% for the glass beads and 11% for the sand. Estimated maximum interfacial areas (Am) obtained with the GACR method were statistically identical to independent measures of the specific solid surface areas of the media. For example, the Am for the glass beads is 29 (±1) cm-1, compared to 32 (±3), 30 (±2), and 31 (±2) cm-1 determined from geometric calculation, N2/BET measurement, and microtomographic measurement, respectively. This indicates that the method produced accurate measures of interfacial area. Interfacial areas determined with the GACR method were similar to those obtained with the standard methods. For example, Aias of 47 and 44 cm-1 were measured with the GACR and XMT methods, respectively, for the sand at a water saturation of 0.57. The results of the study indicate that the GACR method is a viable alternative for measuring air-water interfacial areas. The method is relatively quick, inexpensive, and requires no specialized instrumentation compared to the standard methods.

Porous polycarbene-bearing membrane actuator for ultrasensitive weak-acid detection and real-time chemical reaction monitoring.

Project description:Soft actuators with integration of ultrasensitivity and capability of simultaneous interaction with multiple stimuli through an entire event ask for a high level of structure complexity, adaptability, and/or multi-responsiveness, which is a great challenge. Here, we develop a porous polycarbene-bearing membrane actuator built up from ionic complexation between a poly(ionic liquid) and trimesic acid (TA). The actuator features two concurrent structure gradients, i.e., an electrostatic complexation (EC) degree and a density distribution of a carbene-NH3 adduct (CNA) along the membrane cross-section. The membrane actuator performs the highest sensitivity among the state-of-the-art soft proton actuators toward acetic acid at 10-6?mol?L-1 (M) level in aqueous media. Through competing actuation of the two gradients, it is capable of monitoring an entire process of proton-involved chemical reactions that comprise multiple stimuli and operational steps. The present achievement constitutes a significant step toward real-life application of soft actuators in chemical sensing and reaction technology.

Electrical conductivity in a non-covalent two-dimensional porous organic material with high crystallinity.

Project description:Electroactive macrocycle building blocks are a promising route to new types of functional two-dimensional porous organic frameworks. Our strategy uses conjugated macrocycles that organize into two dimensional porous sheets via non-covalent van der Waals interactions, to make ultrathin films that are just one molecule thick. In bulk, these two-dimensional (2D) sheets stack into a three-dimensional van der Waals crystal, where relatively weak alkyl-alkyl interactions constitute the interface between these sheets. With the liquid-phase exfoliation, we are able to obtain films as thin as two molecular layers. Further using a combination of liquid-phase and mechanical exfoliation, we are able to create non-covalent sheets over a large area (>100 μm2). The ultrathin porous films maintain the single crystal packing from the macrocyclic structure and are electrically conductive. We demonstrate that this new type of 2D non-covalent porous organic framework can be used as the active layer in a field effect transistor device with graphene source and drain contacts along with hexagonal boron nitride as the gate dielectric interface.

High-performance pan-tactic polythioesters with intrinsic crystallinity and chemical recyclability.

Project description:Three types of seemingly unyielding trade-offs have continued to challenge the rational design for circular polymers with both high chemical recyclability and high-performance properties: depolymerizability/performance, crystallinity/ductility, and stereo-disorder/crystallinity. Here, we introduce a monomer design strategy based on a bridged bicyclic thiolactone that produces stereo-disordered to perfectly stereo-ordered polythiolactones, all exhibiting high crystallinity and full chemical recyclability. These polythioesters defy aforementioned trade-offs by having an unusual set of desired properties, including intrinsic tacticity-independent crystallinity and chemical recyclability, tunable tacticities from stereo-disorder to perfect stereoregularity, as well as combined high-performance properties such as high thermal stability and crystallinity, and high mechanical strength, ductility, and toughness.

Growth process control produces high-crystallinity and complete-reaction perovskite solar cells.

Project description:The growth process control (GPC) method, a new method which is better than thermal evaporation, for producing high-crystallinity perovskites by controlling the growth time in a low vacuum, is explored in this work. Inspired by evaporation technology, GPC is an effective method for modifying traditional thermal evaporation and for controlling the crystal growth of perovskite CH3NH3I3. Compared to fabrication with the process of co-evaporation, the MAPbI3 perovskite solar cell fabricated by GPC has high uniformity and film coverage. All of the manufacturing is carried out outside of the glove box. It provides an easy and effective way for perovskite fabrication for industrialization. Here, after using GPC to form perovskite solar cells, the residual methylammonium iodide (MAI) and PbI2 which is produced by the evaporation process can react completely, observed by time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Finally, formed by GPC, perovskite solar cells exhibit high performance and fewer crystal defects. The electron and hole recombination is greatly reduced. Through the GPC method, the J sc and the filling factor are improved with the increase of time after the fabrication. The power conversion efficiency was increased from 11.12% to 16.4%.

Kinetic and chemical analyses of the cytokinin dehydrogenase-catalysed reaction: correlations with the crystal structure.

Project description:CKX (cytokinin dehydrogenase) is a flavoprotein that cleaves cytokinins to adenine and the corresponding side-chain aldehyde using a quinone-type electron acceptor. In the present study, reactions of maize (Zea mays) CKX with five different substrates (N6-isopentenyladenine, trans-zeatin, kinetin, p-topolin and N-methyl-isopentenyladenine) were studied. By using stopped-flow analysis of the reductive half-reaction, spectral intermediates were observed indicative of the transient formation of a binary enzyme-product complex between the cytokinin imine and the reduced enzyme. The reduction rate was high for isoprenoid cytokinins that showed formation of a charge-transfer complex of reduced enzyme with bound cytokinin imine. For the other cytokinins, flavin reduction was slow and no charge-transfer intermediates were observed. The binary complex of reduced enzyme and imine product intermediate decays relatively slowly to form an unbound product, cytokinin imine, which accumulates in the reaction mixture. The imine product only very slowly hydrolyses to adenine and an aldehyde derived from the cytokinin N6 side-chain. Mixing of the substrate-reduced enzyme with Cu2+/imidazole as an electron acceptor to monitor the oxidative half-reaction revealed a high rate of electron transfer for this type of electron acceptor when using N6-isopentenyladenine. The stability of the cytokinin imine products allowed their fragmentation analysis and structure assessment by Q-TOF (quadrupole-time-of-flight) MS/MS. Correlations of the kinetic data with the known crystal structure are discussed for reactions with different cytokinins.

The reaction of an iridium PNP complex with parahydrogen facilitates polarisation transfer without chemical change.

Project description:The short lived pincer complex [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(py)]BF4 is shown to be active for signal amplification by reversible exchange. This catalyst formulation enables the efficient transfer of polarization from parahydrogen to be placed into just a single molecule of the hyperpolarisation target, pyridine. When the catalysts (1)H nuclei are replaced by (2)H, increased levels of substrate hyperpolarization result and when the reverse situation is examined the catalyst itself is clearly visible through hyperpolarised signals. The ligand exchange pathways of [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(py)]BF4 that are associated with this process are shown to involve the formation of 16-electron [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2]BF4 and the 18-electron H2 addition product [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(H2)]BF4.

Polymeric Networks Containing Amine Derivatives as Organocatalysts for Knoevenagel Reaction within Continuously Driven Microfluidic Reactors.

Project description:The Knoevenagel reaction is a classic reaction in organic chemistry for the formation of C-C bonds. In this study, various catalytic monomers for Knoevenagel reactions were synthesized and polymerized via photolithography to form polymeric gel dots with a composition of 90% catalyst, 9% gelling agent and 1% crosslinker. Furthermore, these gel dots were inserted into a microfluidic reactor (MFR) and the conversion of the reaction using gel dots as catalysts in the MFR for 8 h at room temperature was studied. The gel dots containing primary amines showed a better conversion of about 83-90% with aliphatic aldehyde and 86-100% with aromatic aldehyde, compared to the tertiary amines (52-59% with aliphatic aldehyde and 77-93% with aromatic aldehydes) which resembles the reactivity of the amines. Moreover, the addition of polar solvent (water) in the reaction mixture and the swelling properties of the gel dots by altering the polymer backbone showed a significant enhancement in the conversion of the reaction, due to the increased accessibility of the catalytic sites in the polymeric network. These results suggested the primary-amine-based catalysts facilitate better conversion compared to tertiary amines and the reaction solvent had a significant influence on organocatalysis to improve the efficiency of MFR.
