Au₁₉M (M=Cr, Mn, and Fe) as magnetic copies of the golden pyramid.

ABSTRACT: An investigation on structure, stability, and magnetic properties of singly doped Au₁₉M (M=Cr, Mn, and Fe) clusters is carried out by means of density functional theory calculations. The studied clusters prefer forming magnetic versions of the unique tetrahedral Au₂₀. Stable sextet Au₁₉Cr is identified as the least reactive species and can be qualified as a magnetic superatom. Analysis on cluster electronic structures shows that the competition between localized and delocalized electronic states governs the stability and magnetic properties of Au₁₉M clusters.

Magnetic, electrical and mechanical properties of Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 high entropy alloy.

Project description:A prototypical, single-phase, and non-equiatomic high entropy alloy Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 has been mechanically deformed at room and cryogenic temperatures. Plastic deformation was accommodated via crystallographic slip at room temperature while transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) has been observed in samples deformed at 77 K. The stress-induced martensitic transformation occurred from face-centered cubic (FCC) to hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structures. A detailed electron backscatter diffraction analysis was utilized to detect phase change and evaluate the evolution of the HCP phase volume fraction as a function of plastic strain. Physical properties of undeformed and deformed samples were measured to elucidate the effect of deformation-induced phase transitions on the magnetic and electrical properties of Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 alloy. Relatively small magnetic moments along with non-saturating magnetic field dependencies suggest that the ground state in the considered material is ferrimagnetic ordering with coexisting antiferromagnetic phase. The temperature evolution of the coercive fields has been revealed for all samples. The magnitudes of the coercive fields place the considered system into the semi-hard magnetic alloys category. The temperature dependence of the zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization was measured for all samples in the low field regime and the origin of irreversibility in ZFC/FC curves was discussed. Besides, the temperature dependence of the resistivity in all samples was measured and the possible conduction mechanisms were discussed.

Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Boride TMB12 (TM = V, Cr, Mn, and Fe) Monolayers: Robust Antiferromagnetic Semiconductors with Large Magnetic Anisotropy.

Project description:Currently, two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic antiferromagnetism have stimulated research interest due to their insensitivity to external magnetic fields and absence of stray fields. Here, we predict a family of stable transition metal (TM) borides, TMB12 (TM = V, Cr, Mn, Fe) monolayers, by combining TM atoms and B12 icosahedra based on first-principles calculations. Our results show that the four TMB12 monolayers have stable antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground states with large magnetic anisotropic energy. Among them, three TMB12 (TM=V, Cr, Mn) monolayers display an in-plane easy magnetization axis, while the FeB12 monolayer has an out-of-plane easy magnetization axis. Among them, the CrB12 and the FeB12 monolayers are AFM semiconductors with band gaps of 0.13 eV and 0.35 eV, respectively. In particular, the AFM FeB12 monolayer is a spin-polarized AFM material with a Néel temperature of 125 K. Moreover, the electronic and magnetic properties of the CrB12 and the FeB12 monolayers can be modulated by imposing external biaxial strains. Our findings show that the TMB12 monolayers are candidates for designing 2D AFM materials, with potential applications in electronic devices.

Structural and magnetic properties of core-shell Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

Project description:We present a systematic study of core-shell Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles produced by thermal decomposition under mild conditions. The morphology and crystal structure of the nanoparticles revealed the presence of Au core of d = (6.9 ± 1.0) nm surrounded by Fe3O4 shell with a thickness of ~3.5 nm, epitaxially grown onto the Au core surface. The Au/Fe3O4 core-shell structure was demonstrated by high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis. The magnetite shell grown on top of the Au nanoparticle displayed a thermal blocking state at temperatures below TB = 59 K and a relaxed state well above TB. Remarkably, an exchange bias effect was observed when cooling down the samples below room temperature under an external magnetic field. Moreover, the exchange bias field (HEX) started to appear at T~40 K and its value increased by decreasing the temperature. This effect has been assigned to the interaction of spins located in the magnetically disordered regions (in the inner and outer surface of the Fe3O4 shell) and spins located in the ordered region of the Fe3O4 shell.

Activation of H2S by Atomic Cr, Mn, and Fe: Matrix Infrared Spectra and Quantum Chemical Calculations.

Project description:Hydrogen sulfide is toxic and corrosive gas abundantly available in nature. The activation of hydrogen sulfide to produce hydrogen and elemental sulfur is of great significance for possible applications in toxic pollutant control and hydrogen energy regeneration. The activation of H2S by transition metal atoms (M = Cr, Mn, and Fe) has been studied by low-temperature matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that the reaction between ground-state M atoms and H2S is inhibited by the repulsive interactions between the reactants. After being excited upon photolysis, the corresponding excited-state M atoms react with H2S molecules spontaneously. The produced insertion product HMSH further decomposed to metal sulfides upon full-arc mercury lamp irradiation by the splitting of hydrogen.

Star-Shaped Magnetic-Plasmonic Au@Fe3O4 Nano-Heterostructures for Photothermal Therapy.

Project description:Here, we synthesize a Au@Fe3O4 core@shell system with a highly uniform unprecedented star-like shell morphology with combined plasmonic and magnetic properties. An advanced electron microscopy characterization allows assessing the multifaceted nature of the Au core and its role in the growth of the peculiar epitaxial star-like shell with excellent crystallinity and homogeneity. Magnetometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy revealed a pure magnetite shell, with a superior saturation magnetization compared to similar Au@Fe3O4 heterostructures reported in the literature, which is ascribed to the star-like morphology, as well as to the large thickness of the shell. Of note, Au@Fe3O4 nanostar-loaded cancer cells displayed magneto-mechanical stress under a low frequency external alternating magnetic field (few tens of Hz). On the other hand, such a uniform, homogeneous, and thick magnetite shell enables the shift of the plasmonic resonance of the Au core to 640 nm, which is the largest red shift achievable in Au@Fe3O4 homogeneous core@shell systems, prompting application in photothermal therapy and optical imaging in the first biologically transparent window. Preliminary experiments performing irradiation of a stable water suspension of the nanostar and Au@Fe3O4-loaded cancer cell culture suspension at 658 nm confirmed their optical response and their suitability for photothermal therapy. The outstanding features of the prepared system can be thus potentially exploited as a multifunctional platform for magnetic-plasmonic applications.

Magnetic Phase Separation in the Oxypnictide Sr2Cr1.85Mn1.15As2O2.

Project description:Layered Sr2M3As2O2-type oxypnictides are composed of tetrahedral M2Pn2 and square planar MO2 layers, the building blocks of iron-based and cuprate superconductors. To further expand our understanding of the chemical and magnetic properties of the Sr2Cr3-xMnxAs2O2 solid solution, Sr2Cr2MnAs2O2 has been synthesized. The compound crystallizes in the I4/mmm tetragonal space group with a refined stoichiometry of Sr2Cr1.85Mn1.15As2O2. The M(2) site within the M2Pn2 slab is occupied by 42.7% Cr and 57.3% Mn, and the magnetic moments order antiferromagnetically below TN(M2) = 540 K with a C-type antiferromagnetic structure. The M(1) site within the MO2 layers is fully occupied by Cr, and antiferromagnetic order is observed below TN(M1) = 200 K. Along c, there are two possible interplanar arrangements: ferromagnetic with the (1/2, 1/2, 0) propagation vector and antiferromagnetic with the (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) propagation vector. Magnetic phase separation arises so that both propagation vectors are observed below 200 K. Such magnetic phase separation has not been previously observed in Sr2M3As2O2 phases (M = Cr, Mn) and shows that there are several competing magnetic structures present in these compounds.

Synthesis and Characterization of Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Magnetic MoS2@Fe3O4 Nanoparticles for Adsorption of Cr(VI)/Cr(III).

Project description:Recently, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received tremendous attention in many fields including environmental remediation. Magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs) decorated with MoS2 (MoS2@Fe3O4NPs) have been synthesized via a new one-step synthesis route and utilized as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) from aqueous solutions. The obtained MoS2@Fe3O4NPs with numerous surface hydroxyl groups show uniform size and shape, excellent water-dispersibility, and superior magnetic property to enhance the adsorption. The physicochemical properties of the adsorbent prior to and after adsorption of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) were extensively characterized using several advanced instrumental techniques.The adsorption of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) on MoS2@Fe3O4NPs was performed under batch conditions aiming at identification of optimal contact time, pH value of chromium solution, and influence of the presence of competitive ions. This study was supported by modeling of adsorption equilibrium and kinetics by using empirical equations.

Magnetic Control of the Manganese Photoluminescence in Fe3O4/l-Cys ZnS:Mn Nanocomposites.

Project description:We investigated the magnetic control of the Mn photoluminescence (PL) in iron oxide/l-cysteine-capped zinc sulfide (Fe3O4/l-cys ZnS:Mn) nanocomposites via temperature- and field-dependent PL intensity studies. Fe3O4/l-cys ZnS:Mn was synthesized following a wet chemical deposition route and then its physicochemical, morphological, and magnetic properties were characterized. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates the formation of a semiconducting composite material with coexisting phases with high crystalline quality and purity. Electron microscopy reveals that the surfaces of the nanoparticles are clean and smooth, sized between 15 and 30 nm, without any sheathed amorphous phase. Vibrating sample magnetometry and UV light excitation show a clear superparamagnetic behavior and an optical response of Fe3O4/l-cys ZnS:Mn, which revealed its bifunctional nature. Magnetoluminescent coupling at 1.0 T is seen in the form of PL suppression in Fe3O4/l-cys ZnS:Mn from low temperature (10 K) to room temperature, with a PL intensity drop of ∼5% at 10 K and a maximum drop of 10% at room temperature. This observation can be explained by restriction of the energy transfer to Mn orbitals through magnetic ordering and Jahn-Teller distortions. Fe3O4/l-cys ZnS:Mn shows promise as a bifunctional biocompatible compound that can be applied as a theranostic agent and a quantum computational element. A deeper understanding behind the magnetic control of the optical response in bifunctional materials brings forth new arenas in diagnostics and drug delivery.

Removal of Cr(vi) in wastewater by Fe-Mn oxide loaded sludge biochar.

Project description:Sludge biochar loaded with Fe-Mn oxides (FMBC) was prepared and employed to remove Cr(vi) from wastewater. The influences of solution pH, co-existing ion, contact time, adsorption temperature and Cd(vi) concentrations on removing Cr(vi) by FMBC were investigated. The Cr(vi) adsorption on FMBC had strong pH dependence. Additionally, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, SiO32-, NO3- and Cl- ions exhibited no influence on Cr(vi) removal efficiency for FMBC, whereas there were inhibition effects of Pb2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, CO32-, SO42-, and PO43- on removing Cr(vi). The Cr(vi) adsorption from solution for FMBC was well described by models of pseudo-second-order and Langmuir, and the largest Cr(vi) removal capacity of FMBC reached 172.3 mg g-1. FMBC had good capacity for treating electroplating wastewater and mineral dissolving wastewater containing Cr(vi). After five regenerations, the 50 and 5 mg L-1 Cr(vi) removing efficiency of FMBC was 82.34% and 97.68%, respectively. The Cr(vi) removal for FMBC involved adsorption-reduction and re-adsorption of Cr(iii) generated by reduction. These results indicated that FMBC has good prospects for remediating Cr(vi)-containing wastewater.

Half metallicity in Cr substituted Fe2TiSn.

Project description:Band structure tailoring has been a great avenue to achieve the half-metallic electronic ground state in materials. Applying this approach to the full Heusler alloy Fe2TiSn, Cr is introduced systematically at Ti site that conforms to the chemical formula [Formula: see text]Sn. Compositions so obtained have been investigated for its electronic, magnetic, and electrical transport properties with an aim to observe the half-metallic ferromagnetic ground state, anticipated theoretically for Fe2CrSn. Our experimental study using synchrotron X-ray diffraction reveals that only compositions with [Formula: see text] 0.25 yield phase pure L2[Formula: see text] cubic structures. The non-magnetic ground state of Fe2TiSn gets dramatically affected upon inclusion of Cr giving rise to a localized magnetic moment in the background of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) correlations. The ferromagnetic interactions begin to dominate for x = 0.25 composition. Results of its resistivity and magnetoresistance (MR) measurement point towards a half-metallic ground state. The calculation of exchange coupling parameter, [Formula: see text], and orbital projected density of states that indicate a change in hybridization between 3d and 5p orbital, support the observations made from the study of local crystal structure made using the extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Our findings here highlight an interesting prospect of finding half-metallicity via band structure tailoring for wide application in spintronics devices.
