Carbon Nanotube Formic Acid Sensors Using a Nickel Bis( ortho-diiminosemiquinonate) Selector.

ABSTRACT: Formic acid is corrosive, and a sensitive and selective sensor could be useful in industrial, medical, and environmental settings. We present a chemiresistor for detection of formic acid composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nickel bis( ortho-diiminosemiquinonate) (1), a planar metal complex that can act as a ditopic hydrogen-bonding selector. Formic acid is detected in concentrations as low as 83 ppb. The resistance of the material decreases on exposure to formic acid, but slightly increases on exposure to acetic acid. We propose that 1 assists in partial protonation of the CNT by formic acid, but the response toward acetic acid is dominated by inter-CNT swelling. This technology establishes CNT-based chemiresistive discrimination between formic and acetic acid vapors.

Quantification of Nitric Oxide Concentration Using Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Sensors.

Project description:Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical present in biological systems, can have many detrimental effects on the body, from inflammation to cancer. Due to NO's short half-life, detection and quantification is difficult. The inability to quantify NO has hindered researchers' understanding of its impact in healthy and diseased conditions. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), when wrapped in a specific single-stranded DNA chain, becomes selective to NO, creating a fluorescence sensor. Unfortunately, the correlation between NO concentration and the SWNT's fluorescence intensity has been difficult to determine due to an inability to immobilize the sensor without altering its properties. Through the use of a recently developed sensor platform, systematic studies can now be conducted to determine the correlation between SWNT fluorescence and NO concentration. This paper explains the methods used to determine the equations that can be used to convert SWNT fluorescence into NO concentration. Through the use of the equations developed in this paper, an easy method for NO quantification is provided. The methods outlined in this paper will also enable researchers to develop equations to determine the concentration of other reactive species through the use of SWNT sensors.

Carbon Black-Carbon Nanotube Co-Doped Polyimide Sensors for Simultaneous Determination of Ascorbic Acid, Uric Acid, and Dopamine.

Project description:Carbon black (CB) and carbon nanotube (CNT) co-doped polyimide (PI) modified glassy carbon electrode (CB-CNT/PI/GCE) was first prepared for the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA). The CB-CNT/PI/GCE exhibited persistent electrochemical behavior and excellent catalytic activities. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used for the simultaneous detection of AA, DA, and UA in their ternary mixture. The peak separations between AA and DA, and DA and UA, are up to 166 mV and 148 mV, respectively. The CB-CNT/PI/GCE exhibited high sensitivity to DA and UA, with the detection limit of 1.9 µM and 3 µM, respectively. In addition, the CB-CNT/PI/GCE showed sufficient selectivity and long-term stability, and was applicable to detect AA, DA, and UA in human urine sample.

In vitro gastrointestinal gas monitoring with carbon nanotube sensors.

Project description:In vitro simulators of the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract are remarkable technological platforms for studying the impact of food on the gut microbiota, enabling continuous and real-time monitoring of key biomarkers. However, comprehensive real-time monitoring of gaseous biomarkers in these systems is required with a cost-effective approach, which has been challenging to perform experimentally to date. In this work, we demonstrate the integration and in-line use of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based chemiresitive gas sensors coated with a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane for the continuous monitoring of gases within the Simulator of the Human Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME). The findings demonstrate the ability of the gas sensor to continuously monitor the different phases of gas production in this harsh, anaerobic, highly humid, and acidic environment for a long exposure time (16 h) without saturation. This establishes our sensor platform as an effective tool for real-time monitoring of gaseous biomarkers in in vitro systems like SHIME.

Debye screening in single-molecule carbon nanotube field-effect sensors.

Project description:Point-functionalized carbon nanotube field-effect transistors can serve as highly sensitive detectors for biomolecules. With a probe molecule covalently bound to a defect in the nanotube sidewall, two-level random telegraph noise (RTN) in the conductance of the device is observed as a result of a charged target biomolecule binding and unbinding at the defect site. Charge in proximity to the defect modulates the potential (and transmission) of the conductance-limiting barrier created by the defect. In this Letter, we study how these single-molecule electronic sensors are affected by ionic screening. Both charge in proximity to the defect site and buffer concentration are found to affect RTN amplitude in a manner that follows from simple Debye length considerations. RTN amplitude is also dependent on the potential of the electrolyte gate as applied to the reference electrode; at high enough gate potentials, the target DNA is completely repelled and RTN is suppressed.

Tuning Selectivity of Fluorescent Carbon Nanotube-Based Neurotransmitter Sensors.

Project description:Detection of neurotransmitters is an analytical challenge and essential to understand neuronal networks in the brain and associated diseases. However, most methods do not provide sufficient spatial, temporal, or chemical resolution. Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been used as building blocks for sensors/probes that detect catecholamine neurotransmitters, including dopamine. This approach provides a high spatial and temporal resolution, but it is not understood if these sensors are able to distinguish dopamine from similar catecholamine neurotransmitters, such as epinephrine or norepinephrine. In this work, the organic phase (DNA sequence) around SWCNTs was varied to create sensors with different selectivity and sensitivity for catecholamine neurotransmitters. Most DNA-functionalized SWCNTs responded to catecholamine neurotransmitters, but both dissociation constants (Kd) and limits of detection were highly dependent on functionalization (sequence). Kd values span a range of 2.3 nM (SWCNT-(GC)15 + norepinephrine) to 9.4 μM (SWCNT-(AT)15 + dopamine) and limits of detection are mostly in the single-digit nM regime. Additionally, sensors of different SWCNT chirality show different fluorescence increases. Moreover, certain sensors (e.g., SWCNT-(GT)10) distinguish between different catecholamines, such as dopamine and norepinephrine at low concentrations (50 nM). These results show that SWCNTs functionalized with certain DNA sequences are able to discriminate between catecholamine neurotransmitters or to detect them in the presence of interfering substances of similar structure. Such sensors will be useful to measure and study neurotransmitter signaling in complex biological settings.

Machine learning-assisted ammonium detection using zinc oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite based impedance sensors.

Project description:We report a machine learning approach to accurately correlate the impedance variations in zinc oxide/multi walled carbon nanotube nanocomposite (F-MWCNT/ZnO-NFs) to NH4+ ions concentrations. Impedance response of F-MWCNT/ZnO-NFs nanocomposites with varying ZnO:MWCNT compositions were evaluated for its sensitivity and selectivity to NH4+ ions in the presence of structurally similar analytes. A decision-making model was built, trained and tested using important features of the impedance response of F-MWCNT/ZnO-NF to varying NH4+ concentrations. Different algorithms such as kNN, random forest, neural network, Naïve Bayes and logistic regression are compared and discussed. ML analysis have led to identify the most prominent features of an impedance spectrum that can be used as the ML predictors to estimate the real concentration of NH4+ ion levels. The proposed NH4+ sensor along with the decision-making model can identify and operate at specific operating frequencies to continuously collect the most relevant information from a system.

Graphene as a functional layer for semiconducting carbon nanotube transistor sensors.

Project description:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) hold vast potential for future electronic devices due to their outstanding properties, however covalent functionalization often destroys the intrinsic properties of SWCNTs, thus limiting their full potential. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of a functionalized graphene/semiconducting SWCNT (T@fG) heterostructured thin film transistor as a chemical sensor. In this structural configuration, graphene acts as an atom-thick, impermeable layer that can be covalently functionalized via facile diazonium chemistry to afford a high density of surface functional groups while protecting the underlying SWCNT network from chemical modification, even during a covalent chemical reaction. As a result, the highly functionalized carbon-based hybrid structure exhibits excellent transistor properties with a carrier mobility and ON/OFF ratio as high as 64 cm2/Vs and 5400, respectively. To demonstrate its use in potential applications, T@fG thin films were fabricated as aqueous ammonium sensors exhibiting a detection limit of 0.25 μM in a millimolar ionic strength solution, which is comparable with state-of-the-art aqueous ammonium nanosensors.

Disposable Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensors Using Screen-Printed Nickel/Carbon Composites on Indium Tin Oxide Electrodes.

Project description:Disposable screen-printed nickel/carbon composites on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes (DSPNCE) were developed for the detection of glucose without enzymes. The DSPNCE were prepared by screen-printing the ITO substrate with a 50 wt% nickel/carbon composite, followed by curing at 400 °C for 30 min. The redox couple of Ni(OH)₂/NiOOH was deposited on the surface of the electrodes via cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning from 0-1.5 V for 30 cycles in 0.1 M NaOH solution. The DSPNCE were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical methods. The resulting electrical currents, measured by CV and chronoamperometry at 0.65 V vs. Ag/AgCl, showed a good linear response with glucose concentrations from 1.0-10 mM. Also, the prepared electrodes showed no interference from common physiologic interferents such as uric acid (UA) or ascorbic acid (AA). Therefore, this approach allowed the development of a simple, disposable glucose biosensor.

Detection of asymptomatic nigrostriatal dopaminergic lesion in rats by exhaled air analysis using carbon nanotube sensors.

Project description:The ante-mortem diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) still relies on clinical symptoms. Biomarkers could in principle be used for the early detection of PD-related neuronal damage, but no validated, inexpensive, and simple biomarkers are available yet. Here we report on the breath-print of presymptomatic PD in rats, using a model with 50% lesion of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra. Exhaled breath was collected from 19 rats (10 lesioned and 9 sham operated) and analyzed using organically functionalized carbon nanotube sensors. Discriminant factor analysis detected statistically significant differences between the study groups and a classification accuracy of 90% was achieved using leave-one-out cross-validation. The sensors' breath-print was supported by determining statistically significant differences of several volatile organic compounds in the breath of the lesioned rats and the sham operated rats, using gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. The observed breath-print shows potential for cost-effective, fast, and reliable early PD detection.

Nucleic acid transport through carbon nanotube membranes.

Project description:We study the electrophoretic transport of single-stranded RNA molecules through 1.5-nm-wide pores of carbon nanotube membranes by molecular dynamics simulations. From approximately 170 individual RNA translocation events analyzed at full atomic resolution of solvent, membrane, and RNA, we identify key factors in membrane transport of biopolymers. RNA entry into the nanotube pores is controlled by conformational dynamics, and exit by hydrophobic attachment of RNA bases to the pores. Without electric field, RNA remains hydrophobically trapped in the membrane despite large entropic and energetic penalties for confining charged polymers inside nonpolar pores. Differences in RNA conformational flexibility and hydrophobicity result in sequence-dependent rates of translocation, a prerequisite for nanoscale separation devices.
