Porous Aluminum Oxide and Magnesium Oxide Films Using Organic Hydrogels as Structure Matrices.

ABSTRACT: We describe the synthesis of mesoporous Al?O? and MgO layers on silicon wafer substrates by using poly(dimethylacrylamide) hydrogels as porogenic matrices. Hydrogel films are prepared by spreading the polymer through spin-coating, followed by photo-cross-linking and anchoring to the substrate surface. The metal oxides are obtained by swelling the hydrogels in the respective metal nitrate solutions and subsequent thermal conversion. Combustion of the hydrogel results in mesoporous metal oxide layers with thicknesses in the ?m range and high specific surface areas up to 558 m²?g^-1. Materials are characterized by SEM, FIB ablation, EDX, and Kr physisorption porosimetry.

Peculiar Porous Aluminum Oxide Films Produced via Electrochemical Anodizing in Malonic Acid Solution with Arsenazo-I Additive.

Project description:The influence of arsenazo-I additive on electrochemical anodizing of pure aluminum foil in malonic acid was studied. Aluminum dissolution increased with increasing arsenazo-I concentration. The addition of arsenazo-I also led to an increase in the volume expansion factor up to 2.3 due to the incorporation of organic compounds and an increased number of hydroxyl groups in the porous aluminum oxide film. At a current density of 15 mA·cm-2 and an arsenazo-I concentration 3.5 g·L-1, the carbon content in the anodic alumina of 49 at. % was achieved. An increase in the current density and concentration of arsenazo-I caused the formation of an arsenic-containing compound with the formula Na1,5Al2(OH)4,5(AsO4)3·7H2O in the porous aluminum oxide film phase. These film modifications cause a higher number of defects and, thus, increase the ionic conductivity, leading to a reduced electric field in galvanostatic anodizing tests. A self-adjusting growth mechanism, which leads to a higher degree of self-ordering in the arsenazo-free electrolyte, is not operative under the same conditions when arsenazo-I is added. Instead, a dielectric breakdown mechanism was observed, which caused the disordered porous aluminum oxide film structure.

Characterization and Structure⁻Property Relationships of Organic⁻Inorganic Hybrid Composites Based on Aluminum⁻Magnesium Hydroxycarbonate and Azo Chromophore.

Project description:In this study, novel organic⁻inorganic composites were prepared by the complexation of dicarboxylic azo dye (AD) with aluminum⁻magnesium hydroxycarbonate (AlMg⁻LH). This procedure provides an effective method for the stabilization of dicarboxylic organic chromophores on an AlMg-LH host. The structures of the hybrid composites were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), 27-Al solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The TOF-SIMS method was applied to investigate the metal⁻dye interactions and to monitor the thermal stability of the organic⁻inorganic complexes. Secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed the presence of a characteristic peak for C18H10O₅N₂Mg₂2+, indicating that both carboxylic groups interacted with AlMg-LH by forming complexes with two Mg2+ ions. Modification with hybrid pigments affected the crystal structure of the AlMg-LH mineral, as shown by the appearance of new peaks on the X-ray diffraction patterns. Adsorption of the dicarboxylic chromophore not only led to significantly enhanced solvent resistance but also improved the thermal and photostability of the hybrid pigments. We propose a possible arrangement of the azo dye in the inorganic matrix, as well as the presumed mechanism of stabilization.

Stiffening of graphene oxide films by soft porous sheets.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) sheets have been used as a model system to study how the mechanical properties of two-dimensional building blocks scale to their bulk form, such as paper-like, lamellar-structured thin films. Here, we report that the modulus of multilayer GO films can be significantly enhanced if some of the sheets are drastically weakened by introducing in-plane porosity. Nanometer-sized pores are introduced in GO sheets by chemical etching. Membrane-deflection measurements at the single-layer level show that the sheets are drastically weakened as the in-plane porosity increases. However, the mechanical properties of the corresponding multilayer films are much less sensitive to porosity. Surprisingly, the co-assembly of pristine and etched GO sheets yields even stiffer films than those made from pristine sheets alone. This is attributed to the more compliant nature of the soft porous sheets, which act as a binder to improve interlayer packing and load transfer in the multilayer films.

Breath figure-derived porous semiconducting films for organic electronics.

Project description:Porous semiconductor film morphologies facilitate fluid diffusion and mass transport into the charge-carrying layers of diverse electronic devices. Here, we report the nature-inspired fabrication of several porous organic semiconductor-insulator blend films [semiconductor: P3HT (p-type polymer), C8BTBT (p-type small-molecule), and N2200 (n-type polymer); insulator: PS] by a breath figure patterning method and their broad and general applicability in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), gas sensors, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), and chemically doped conducting films. Detailed morphological analysis of these films demonstrates formation of textured layers with uniform nanopores reaching the bottom substrate with an unchanged solid-state packing structure. Device data gathered with both porous and dense control semiconductor films demonstrate that the former films are efficient TFT semiconductors but with added advantage of enhanced sensitivity to gases (e.g., 48.2%/ppm for NO2 using P3HT/PS), faster switching speeds (4.7 s for P3HT/PS OECTs), and more efficient molecular doping (conductivity, 0.13 S/m for N2200/PS).

Effect of extended defects on photoluminescence of gallium oxide and aluminum gallium oxide epitaxial films.

Project description:In this work, a systematic photoluminescence (PL) study on three series of gallium oxide/aluminum gallium oxide films and bulk single crystals is performed including comparing doping, epitaxial substrates, and aluminum concentration. It is observed that blue/green emission intensity strongly correlates with extended structural defects rather than the point defects frequently assumed. Bulk crystals or Si-doped films homoepitaxially grown on (010) β-Ga2O3 yield an intense dominant UV emission, while samples with extended structural defects, such as gallium oxide films grown on either (-201) β-Ga2O3 or sapphire, as well as thick aluminum gallium oxide films grown on either (010) β-Ga2O3 or sapphire, all show a very broad PL spectrum with intense dominant blue/green emission. PL differences between samples and the possible causes of these differences are analyzed. This work expands previous reports that have so far attributed blue and green emissions to point defects and shows that in the case of thin films, extended defects might have a prominent role in emission properties.

Mixed Small-Molecule Matrices Improve Nanoparticle Dispersibility in Organic Semiconductor-Nanoparticle Films.

Project description:Controlling the dispersibility of nanocrystalline inorganic quantum dots (QDs) within organic semiconductor (OSC):QD nanocomposite films is critical for a wide range of optoelectronic devices. This work demonstrates how small changes to the OSC host molecule can have a dramatic detrimental effect on QD dispersibility within the host organic semiconductor matrix as quantified by grazing incidence X-ray scattering. It is commonplace to modify QD surface chemistry to enhance QD dispersibility within an OSC host. Here, an alternative route toward optimizing QD dispersibilities is demonstrated, which dramatically improves QD dispersibilities through blending two different OSCs to form a fully mixed OSC matrix phase.

Method for Aluminum Oxide Thin Films Prepared through Low Temperature Atomic Layer Deposition for Encapsulating Organic Electroluminescent Devices.

Project description:Preparation of dense alumina (Al₂O₃) thin film through atomic layer deposition (ALD) provides a pathway to achieve the encapsulation of organic light emitting devices (OLED). Unlike traditional ALD which is usually executed at higher reaction n temperatures that may affect the performance of OLED, this application discusses the development on preparation of ALD thin film at a low temperature. One concern of ALD is the suppressing effect of ambient temperature on uniformity of thin film. To mitigate this issue, the pumping time in each reaction cycle was increased during the preparation process, which removed reaction byproducts and inhibited the formation of vacancies. As a result, the obtained thin film had both high uniformity and density properties, which provided an excellent encapsulation performance. The results from microstructure morphology analysis, water vapor transmission rate, and lifetime test showed that the difference in uniformity between thin films prepared at low temperatures, with increased pumping time, and high temperatures was small and there was no obvious influence of increased pumping time on light emitting performance. Meanwhile, the permeability for water vapor of the thin film prepared at a low temperature was found to reach as low as 1.5 × 10-4 g/(m²·day) under ambient conditions of 25 °C and 60% relative humidity, indicating a potential extension in the lifetime for the OLED.

Organic Passivation-Enhanced Ferroelectricity in Perovskite Oxide Films.

Project description:Perovskite oxides and organic-inorganic halide perovskite materials, with numerous fascinating features, have been subjected to extensive studies. Most of the properties of perovskite materials are dependence on their ferroelectricity that denoted by remanent polarization (Pr). Thus, the increase of Pr in perovskite films is mainly an effort in material physics. At present, commonplace improvement schemes, i.e., controlling material crystallinity, and post-annealing by using a high-temperature process, are normally used. However, a simpler and temporal strategy for Pr improvement is always unavailable to perovskite material researchers. In this study, an organic coating layer, low-temperature, and vacuum-free strategy is proposed to improve the Pr, directly increasing the Pr from 36 to 56 µC cm-2. Further study finds that the increased Pr originates from the suppression of the oxygen defects and Ti defects. This organic coating layer strategy for passivating the defects may open a new way for the preparation of higher-performance and cost-effective perovskite products, further improving its prospective for application in the electron devices field.

Pressurized carbonization of mixed plastics into porous carbon sheets on magnesium oxide.

Project description:Conversion of waste thermoplastics into porous carbons has attracted wide attention due to the requirement of recycling of large quantities of municipal solid waste. This work reports the preparation of porous carbon sheets on magnesium oxide from mixed thermoplastics including polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and polyethylene terephthalate in a closed autoclave at 500 °C. The influence of the weight ratio of magnesium oxide to mixed plastics on the yield and textural properties of the carbon was examined. The morphology and structure of the porous carbon were also characterized. The maximum BET surface area was 713 m2 g-1 at a weight ratio of MgO/polymer of 4 and the maximum pore volume was 5.27 cm3 g-1 at a weight ratio of MgO/polymer of 6. The reaction mechanism was explored by analyzing the product distribution and composition of gas and liquid at different reaction times. Aromatics were the main source for the growth of carbon. Model experiments of carbonization of different aromatics were conducted to evaluate the carbonization reactivity of aromatics. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, especially acenes, produced more carbon.

Aluminum Oxide Nanoparticle Films Deposited from a Nonthermal Plasma: Synthesis, Characterization, and Crystallization.

Project description:Aluminum oxide, both in amorphous and crystalline forms, is a widely used inorganic ceramic material because of its chemical and structural properties. In this work, we synthesized amorphous aluminum oxide nanoparticles using a capacitively coupled nonthermal plasma utilizing trimethylaluminum and oxygen as precursors and studied their crystallization and phase transformation behavior through postsynthetic annealing. The use of two reactor geometries resulted in amorphous aluminum oxide nanoparticles with similar compositions but different sizes. Size tuning of these nanoparticles was achieved by varying the reactor pressure to produce amorphous aluminum oxide nanoparticles ranging from 6 to 22 nm. During postsynthetic annealing, powder samples of amorphous nanoparticles began to crystallize at 800 °C, forming crystalline θ and γ phase alumina. Their phase transformation behavior was found to be size-dependent in that powders of small 6 nm amorphous particles transformed to form phase-pure α-Al2O3 at 1100 °C, while powders of large 11 nm particles remained in the θ and γ phases. This phenomenon is attributed to the fast rate of densification and neck formation in small amorphous aluminum oxide particles.
