Δ<sup>9</sup> -tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal active component in Cannabis sativa extracts such as marijuana, participates in cell signalling by binding to cannabinoid CB<sub>1</sub> and CB<sub>2</sub> receptors on the cell surface.
