Titanium-Catalyzed Hydroaminoalkylation of Ethylene.

ABSTRACT: The first examples of titanium-catalyzed hydroaminoalkylation reactions of ethylene with secondary amines are presented. The reactions can be achieved with various titanium catalysts and they do not require the use of high pressure equipment. In addition, the first solid-state structure of a titanapyrrolidine that is formed by insertion of an alkene into the Ti-C bond of a titanaaziridine is reported.

Project description:The first cationic titanium catalyst system for the intermolecular hydroaminoalkylation of alkenes with various tertiary alkylamines is presented. Corresponding reactions which involve the addition of the α-C-H bond of a tertiary amine across the C-C double bond of an alkene take place at temperatures close to room temperature with excellent regioselectivity to deliver the branched products exclusively. Interestingly, for selected amines, α-C-H bond activation occurs not only at N-methyl but also at N-methylene groups.

Stereoselective Synthesis of Tertiary Allylic Amines by Titanium-Catalyzed Hydroaminoalkylation of Alkynes with Tertiary Amines.

Project description:Intermolecular hydroaminoalkylation reactions of symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkynes with tertiary amines take place in the presence of catalytic amounts of TiBn4 , Ph3 C[B(C6 F5 )4 ], and a sterically demanding aminopyridinato ligand precursor. The resulting products, synthetically and pharmaceutically useful tertiary β,γ-disubstituted allylic amines, are formed in convincing yields and with excellent stereoselectivity. Particularly promising for future applications is the fact that even the industrial side product trimethylamine can be used as a substrate.

Ni-catalyzed hydroaminoalkylation of alkynes with amines.

Project description:Allylic amines are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis and exist in bioactive compounds, but their synthesis via hydroaminoalkylation of alkynes with amines has been a formidable challenge. Here, we report a late transition metal Ni-catalyzed hydroaminoalkylation of alkynes with N-sulfonyl amines, providing a series of allylic amines in up to 94% yield. Double ligands of N-heterocyclic carbene (IPr) and tricyclohexylphosphine (PCy3) effectively promote the reaction.

Ruthenium catalyzed hydroaminoalkylation of isoprene via transfer hydrogenation: byproduct-free prenylation of hydantoins.

Project description:The ruthenium catalyst derived from Ru3(CO)12 and triphos [Ph2P(CH2CH2PPh2)2] promotes the direct C-C coupling of isoprene with aryl substituted hydantoins 1a–1f at the diene C4-position to furnish products of n-prenylation 2a–2f. A mechanism involving hydantoin dehydrogenation followed by diene-imine oxidative coupling to furnish a transient aza-ruthencyclopentene is proposed.

A Titanium-Catalyzed Reductive α-Desulfonylation.

Project description:A titanium(III)-catalyzed desulfonylation gives access to functionalized alkyl nitrile building blocks from α-sulfonyl nitriles, circumventing traditional base-mediated α-alkylation conditions and strong single electron donors. The reaction tolerates numerous functional groups including free alcohols, esters, amides, and it can be applied also to the α-desulfonylation of ketones. In addition, a one-pot desulfonylative alkylation is demonstrated. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate a catalyst-dependent mechanism involving a homolytic C-S cleavage.

Palladium-catalyzed 1,1-difunctionalization of ethylene.

Project description:The 1,1-difunctionalization of ethylene, with aryl/vinyl/heteroaryl transmetalating agents and vinyl electrophiles, is reported. The reaction is high-yielding under a low pressure of ethylene, and regioselectivity is generally high for the 1,1-disubstituted product. The process is highlighted by the use of heteroaromatic cross-coupling reagents, which have not been competent reaction partners in previously reported efforts.

Titanium(IV)-catalyzed stereoselective synthesis of spirooxindole-1-pyrrolines.

Project description:A stereoselective cyclization between alkylidene oxindoles and 5-methoxyoxazoles has been developed using catalytic titanium(IV) chloride (as low as 5 mol %) to afford spiro[3,3'-oxindole-1-pyrrolines] in excellent yield (up to 99%) and diastereoselectivity (up to 99:1). Using a chiral scandium(III)-indapybox/BArF complex affords enantioenriched spirooxindole-1-pyrrolines where a ligand-induced reversal of diastereoselectivity is observed. This methodology is further demonstrated for the synthesis of pyrrolines from malonate alkylidene and coumarin derivatives.

Phenylene-Bridged OSSO-Type Titanium Complexes in the Polymerization of Ethylene and Propylene.

Project description:The dichloro titanium complexes (OSSO tBu)TiCl2 (1) and (OSSOCum)TiCl2 (2) bearing o-phenylene-bridged OSSO-type ligands [OSSO tBu-H = 6,6'-((1,2-phenylenebis(sulfanediyl))bis(methylene))bis(2,4-di-tert-butyphenol) and OSSOCum-H = 6,6'-((1,2-phenylenebis(sulfanediyl))bis(methylene))bis(2,4-bis(2-phenylpropan-2-yl)phenol)] were prepared and characterized. The X-ray structure of 1 revealed that Ti atom has an octahedral coordination geometry with an fac-fac wrapping of the [OSSO] ligand. In solution at 25 °C, 1 mainly retains the C 2 symmetric structure, whereas 2 shows an equilibrium between C 2- and C 1-symmetric stereoisomers. Activation of 2 with (Ph3C)[B(C6F5)4] led to a highly active catalytic system with an activity of 238 kgPE·molcat -1·bar-1·h-1; linear polyethylene with a T m of 122 °C and M w of 107 kDa were obtained under these conditions. Catalyst 1 displayed the moderate activity of 59 kgPE·molcat -1·bar-1·h-1. Gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed the formation of high-molecular-weight polyethylenes with very large distributions of the molecular weights, indicating a low control of the polymerization process, probably becaue of the presence of different active species in solution. Density functional theory investigation provides a rational for the relative high-molecular-weight polymers obtained with these complexes. The precatalyst 2 was also active in propylene polymerization producing atactic oligomers terminated with unsaturated end groups.
