Desialylation-loss of terminal sialic acid residues from glycoconjugates catalyzed by sialidases-is involved in many human diseases and is considered a key molecular event of atherosclerosis onset. Desialylated low-density lipoproteins with atherogenic properties have been detected in human blood previously.
