3D Cage COFs: A Dynamic Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework with High-Connectivity Organic Cage Nodes.

ABSTRACT: Three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are rare because there is a limited choice of organic building blocks that offer multiple reactive sites in a polyhedral geometry. Here, we synthesized an organic cage molecule (Cage-6-NH2) that was used as a triangular prism node to yield the first cage-based 3D COF, 3D-CageCOF-1. This COF adopts an unreported 2-fold interpenetrated acs topology and exhibits reversible dynamic behavior, switching between a small-pore (sp) structure and a large-pore (lp) structure. It also shows high CO2 uptake and captures water at low humidity (<40%). This demonstrates the potential for expanding the structural complexity of 3D COFs by using organic cages as the building units.

Breaking Dynamic Behavior in 3D Covalent Organic Framework with Pre-Locked Linker Strategy.

Project description:Due to their large surface area and pore volume, three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) have emerged as competitive porous materials. However, structural dynamic behavior, often observed in imine-linked 3D COFs, could potentially unlock their potential application in gas storage. Herein, we showed how a pre-locked linker strategy introduces breaking dynamic behavior in 3D COFs. A predesigned planar linker-based 3,8-diamino-6-phenylphenanthridine (DPP) was prepared to produce non-dynamic 3D JUC-595, as the benzylideneamine moiety in DPP locked the linker flexibility and restricted the molecular bond rotation of the imine linkages. Upon solvent inclusion and release, the PXRD profile of JUC-595 remained intake, while JUC-594 with a flexible benzidine linker experienced crystal transformation due to framework contraction-expansion. As a result, the activated JUC-595 achieved higher surface areas (754 m2 g-1) than that of JUC-594 (548 m2 g-1). Furthermore, improved CO2 and CH4 storages were also seen in JUC-595 compared with JUC-594. Impressively, JUC-595 recorded a high normalized H2 storage capacity that surpassed other reported high-surface area 3D COFs. This works shows important insights on manipulating the structural properties of 3D COF to tune gas storage performance.

A Novel One-Dimensional Porphyrin-Based Covalent Organic Framework.

A self-standing three-dimensional covalent organic framework film.

Project description:Covalent crystals such as diamonds are a class of fascinating materials that are challenging to fabricate in the form of thin films. This is because spatial kinetic control of bond formation is required to create covalently bonded crystal films. Directional crystal growth is commonly achieved by chemical vapor deposition, an approach that is hampered by technical complexity and associated high cost. Here we report on a liquid-liquid interfacial approach based on physical-organic considerations to synthesize an ultrathin covalent crystal film. By distributing reactants into separate phases using hydrophobicity, the chemical reaction is confined to an interface that orients the crystal growth. A molecular-smooth interface combined with in-plane isotropic conditions enables the synthesis of films on a centimeter size scale with a uniform thickness of 13 nm. The film exhibits considerable mechanical robustness enabling a free-standing length of 37 µm, as well as a clearly anisotropic chemical structure and crystal lattice alignment.

High-Throughput Computational Screening of Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks (2D COFs) for Capturing Radon in Moist Air.

Project description:Radon (Rn) and its decay products are the primary sources of natural ionizing radiation exposure for the public, posing significant health risks, including being a leading cause of lung cancer. Porous material-based adsorbents offer a feasible and efficient solution for controlling Rn concentrations in various scenes to achieve safe levels. However, due to competitive adsorption between Rn and water, finding candidates with a higher affinity and capacity for capturing Rn in humid air remains a significant challenge. Here, we conducted high-throughput computational screening of 8641 two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) in moist air using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. We identified the top five candidates and revealed the structure-performance relationship. Our findings suggest that a well-defined cavity with an approximate spherical inner space, with a diameter matching that of Rn, is the structural basis for a proper Rn capturing site. This is because the excellent steric match between the cavity and Rn maximizes their van der Waals dispersion interactions. Additionally, the significant polarization electrostatic potential surface of the cavity can regulate the adsorption energy of water and ultimately impact Rn selectivity. Our study offers a potential route for Rn management using 2D COFs in moist air and provides a scientific basis for further experimentation.

Single crystal of a one-dimensional metallo-covalent organic framework.

Project description:Although polymers have been studied for well over a century, there are few examples of covalently linked polymer crystals synthesised directly from solution. One-dimensional (1D) covalent polymers that are packed into a framework structure can be viewed as a 1D covalent organic framework (COF), but making a single crystal of this has been elusive. Herein, by combining labile metal coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry, we discover a strategy to synthesise single-crystal metallo-COFs under solvothermal conditions. The single-crystal structure is rigorously solved using single-crystal electron diffraction technique. The non-centrosymmetric metallo-COF allows second harmonic generation. Due to the presence of syntactic pendant amine groups along the polymer chains, the metallopolymer crystal can be further cross-linked into a crystalline woven network.

Triphenylphosphine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks and Heterogeneous Rh-P-COFs Catalysts.

Project description:The synthesis of phosphine-based functional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has attracted great attention recently. Herein, we present two examples of triphenylphosphine-based COFs (termed P-COFs) with well-defined crystalline structures, high specific surface areas, and good thermal stability. Furthermore, rhodium catalysts with these P-COFs as support material show high turnover frequency for the hydroformylation of olefins, as well as excellent recycling performance. This work not only extends the phosphine-based COF family, but also demonstrates their application in immobilizing homogeneous metal-based (e.g., Rh-phosphine) catalysts for application in heterogeneous catalysis.

Controlled growth of imine-linked two-dimensional covalent organic framework nanoparticles.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) consist of monomers arranged in predictable structures with emergent properties. However, improved crystallinity, porosity, and solution processability remain major challenges. To this end, colloidal COF nanoparticles are useful for mechanistic studies of nucleation and growth and enable advanced spectroscopy and solution processing of thin films. Here we present a general approach to synthesize imine-linked 2D COF nanoparticles and control their size by favoring imine polymerization while preventing the nucleation of new particles. The method yields uniform, crystalline, and high-surface-area particles and is applicable to several imine-linked COFs. In situ X-ray scattering experiments reveal the nucleation of amorphous polymers, which crystallize via imine exchange processes during and after particle growth, consistent with previous mechanistic studies of imine-linked COF powders. The separation of particle formation and growth processes offers control of particle size and may enable further improvements in crystallinity in the future.

Layered 3D Covalent Organic Framework Films Based on Carbon-Carbon Bonds.

Project description:The development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) during the past decades has led to a variety of promising applications within gas storage, catalysis, drug delivery, and sensing. Even though most described synthesis methods result in powdery COFs with uncontrolled grain size, several approaches to grow COF films have recently been explored. However, in all COFs so far presented, the isolated materials are chemically homogeneous, with all functionalities homogeneously distributed throughout the entire material. Strategies to synthetically manipulate the spatial distribution of functionalities in a single film would be game changing. Specifically, this would allow for the introduction of local functionalities and even consecutive functions in single frameworks, thus broadening their synthetic versatility and application potential. Here, we synthesize two 3D crystalline COF films. The frameworks, the ionic B-based and neutral C-based COFs, have similar unit cell parameters, which enables their epitaxial stacking in a layered 3D COF film. The film growth was monitored in real time using a quartz crystal microbalance, showing linear growth with respect to reaction time. The high degree of polymerization was confirmed by chemical analysis and vibrational spectroscopy. Their polycrystalline and anisotropic natures were confirmed with grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. We further expand the scope of the concept by making layered films from COF-300 and its iodinated derivative. Finally, the work presented here will pave the path for multifunctional COF films where concurrent functionalities are embedded in the same crystalline material.

Covalent organic framework membranes through a mixed-dimensional assembly for molecular separations.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great promise in molecular separations owing to their robust, ordered and tunable porous network structures. Currently, the pore size of COFs is usually much larger than most small molecules. Meanwhile, the weak interlamellar interaction between COF nanosheets impedes the preparation of defect-free membranes. Herein, we report a series of COF membranes through a mixed-dimensional assembly of 2D COF nanosheets and 1D cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The pore size of 0.45-1.0 nm is acquired from the sheltering effect of CNFs, rendering membranes precise molecular sieving ability, besides the multiple interactions between COFs and CNFs elevate membrane stability. Accordingly, the membranes exhibit a flux of 8.53 kg m-2 h-1 with a separation factor of 3876 for n-butanol dehydration, and high permeance of 42.8 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 with a rejection of 96.8% for Na2SO4 removal. Our mixed-dimensional design may inspire the fabrication and application of COF membranes.
