Position Effects of Metal Nanoparticles on the Performance of Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes.

ABSTRACT: Metal nanoparticles have been widely used for improving the efficiencies of many optoelectronic devices. Herein, position effects of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the performance of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are investigated. Amphiphilic Au NPs are synthesized so that they can be incorporated into different layers of the PeLEDs to enhance device efficiencies. The photoluminescent (PL) studies indicate apparent position effects; the strongest PL intensity occurs when the NPs are directly blended with the light-emitting perovskite layer. In contrast, the PeLEDs exhibit the highest luminance efficiency while the Au NPs are placed in the hole-transporting layer. The direct blending of the NPs in the perovskite layer might affect the electrical properties, resulting in inferior device performance. The results reported herein can help to understand the enhancing mechanism of the PeLEDs and may also lead to even better efficiencies in the near future.

High-performance large-area quasi-2D perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Serious performance decline arose for perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) once the active area was enlarged. Here we investigate the failure mechanism of the widespread active film fabrication method; and ascribe severe phase-segregation to be the reason. We thereby introduce L-Norvaline to construct a COO--coordinated intermediate phase with low formation enthalpy. The new intermediate phase changes the crystallization pathway, thereby suppressing the phase-segregation. Accordingly, high-quality large-area quasi-2D films with desirable properties are obtained. Based on this, we further rationally adjusted films' recombination kinetics. We reported a series of highly-efficient green quasi-2D PeLEDs with active areas of 9.0 cm2. The peak EQE of 16.4% is achieved in <n > = 3, represent the most efficient large-area PeLEDs yet. Meanwhile, high brightness device with luminance up to 9.1 × 104 cd m-2 has achieved in <n> = 10 film.

Germanium-lead perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Reducing environmental impact is a key challenge for perovskite optoelectronics, as most high-performance devices are based on potentially toxic lead-halide perovskites. For photovoltaic solar cells, tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite materials provide a promising solution for reducing toxicity. However, Sn-Pb perovskites typically exhibit low luminescence efficiencies, and are not ideal for light-emitting applications. Here we demonstrate highly luminescent germanium-lead (Ge-Pb) perovskite films with photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQEs) of up to ~71%, showing a considerable relative improvement of ~34% over similarly prepared Ge-free, Pb-based perovskite films. In our initial demonstration of Ge-Pb perovskite LEDs, we achieve external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to ~13.1% at high brightness (~1900 cd m-2), a step forward for reduced-toxicity perovskite LEDs. Our findings offer a new solution for developing eco-friendly light-emitting technologies based on perovskite semiconductors.

Improved Performance of Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes by Quantum Confinement Effect in Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:In this study, we demonstrate an easy and reliable solution-processed technique using an extra adductive in the perovskite precursor solution. Using this method, a dense and uniform morphology with full surface coverage and highly fluorescent films with nanoscale crystal grains can be obtained. The high exciton binding energy in the resulting films employing octylammonium bromide (OAB) adductives proved that high fluorescence originated from the quantum confinement effect. The corresponding perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) that were based on this technique also exhibited excellent device performance.

Transparent near-infrared perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Mobile and wearable devices are increasingly reliant on near-infrared (NIR) covert illumination for facial recognition, eye-tracking or motion and depth sensing functions. However, these small devices offer limited spatial real estate that is typically already occupied by their full-area electronic color displays. Here, we report a transparent perovskite light-emitting diode (LED) that could be overlaid across a color display to provide an efficient and high-intensity NIR illumination. Our transparent devices are constructed with an ITO/AZO/PEIE/FAPbI3/poly-TPD/MoO3/Al/ITO/Ag/ITO architecture, and offer a high average transmittance of more than 55% across the visible spectral region. In particular, our Al/ITO/Ag/ITO top transparent electrode was designed to offer a combination low sheet resistance and low plasma damage upon electrode deposition. The devices emit at 799 nm with a high total external quantum efficiency of 5.7% at a current density of 5.3 mA cm-2 and a high radiance of 1.5 W sr-1 m-2, and possess a large functional device area of 120 mm2. The efficient performance is ideal for battery-powered wearable devices, and could enable advanced security and sensing features on future smart-watches, phones, gaming consoles and augmented or virtual reality headsets.

Microcavity top-emission perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on perovskites show great potential in lighting and display applications. However, although perovskite films with high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies are commonly achieved, the efficiencies of perovskite LEDs are largely limited by the low light out-coupling efficiency. Here, we show that high-efficiency perovskite LEDs with a high external quantum efficiency of 20.2% and an ultrahigh radiant exitance up to 114.9 mW cm-2 can be achieved by employing the microcavity effect to enhance light extraction. The enhanced microcavity effect and light out-coupling efficiency are confirmed by the study of angle-dependent emission profiles. Our results show that both the optical and electrical properties of the device need to be optimized to achieve high-performance perovskite LEDs.

Spectra stable blue perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Device performance and in particular device stability for blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) remain considerable challenges for the whole community. In this manuscript, we conceive an approach by tuning the 'A-site' cation composition of perovskites to develop blue-emitters. We herein report a Rubidium-Cesium alloyed, quasi-two-dimensional perovskite and demonstrate its great potential for pure-blue PeLED applications. Composition engineering and in-situ passivation are conducted to further improve the material's emission property and stabilities. Consequently, we get a prominent film photoluminescence quantum yield of around 82% under low excitation density. Encouraged by these findings, we finally achieve a spectra-stable blue PeLED with the peak external quantum efficiency of 1.35% and a half-lifetime of 14.5 min, representing the most efficient and stable pure-blue PeLEDs reported so far. The strategy is also demonstrated to be able to generate efficient perovskite blue emitters and PeLEDs in the whole blue spectral region (from 454 to 492 nm).

Efficient metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes with significantly improved light extraction on nanophotonic substrates.

Project description:Metal halide perovskite has emerged as a promising material for light-emitting diodes. In the past, the performance of devices has been improved mainly by optimizing the active and charge injection layers. However, the large refractive index difference among different materials limits the overall light extraction. Herein, we fabricate efficient methylammonium lead bromide light-emitting diodes on nanophotonic substrates with an optimal device external quantum efficiency of 17.5% which is around twice of the record for the planar device based on this material system. Furthermore, optical modelling shows that a high light extraction efficiency of 73.6% can be achieved as a result of a two-step light extraction process involving nanodome light couplers and nanowire optical antennas on the nanophotonic substrate. These results suggest that utilization of nanophotonic structures can be an effective approach to achieve high performance perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Photonic Cavity Effects for Enhanced Efficiency in Layered Perovskite-Based Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:Layered architectures for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are the standard approach for solution-processable materials such as metal-halide perovskites. Upon designing the composition and thicknesses of the layers forming the LED, the primary focus is typically on the optimization of charge injection and balance. However, this approach only considers the process until electrons and holes recombine to generate photons, while for achieving optimized LED performance, the generated light must also be efficiently outcoupled. Our work focuses on the latter aspect. We assume efficient photon generation and analyze the effects of the geometrical configuration together with the dipole orientation, mimicking the light emission, on the main characteristics defining the LED, such as the Purcell effect and the outcoupling efficiency. We find that in-plane dipoles result in significantly increased outcoupling efficiency. Furthermore, the mismatch in refractive index among the layers and their different thicknesses can be tuned to maximize the Purcell effect and minimize internal losses. The combined optimization of dipole orientation and layer thicknesses can improve the efficiency of the LED up to a factor 10, hence highlighting the importance of considering also the photonic properties of the LED structures if the objective is to maximize the LED performance.

Efficient light-emitting diodes based on oriented perovskite nanoplatelets.

Project description:Solution-processed planar perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) promise high-performance and cost-effective electroluminescent devices ideal for large-area display and lighting applications. Exploiting emission layers with high ratios of horizontal transition dipole moments (TDMs) is expected to boost the photon outcoupling of planar LEDs. However, LEDs based on anisotropic perovskite nanoemitters remain to be inefficient (external quantum efficiency, EQE <5%) due to the difficulties of simultaneously controlling the orientations of TDMs, achieving high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and realizing charge balance in the films of assembled nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate efficient electroluminescence from an in situ grown perovskite film composed of a monolayer of face-on oriented nanoplatelets. The ratio of horizontal TDMs of the perovskite nanoplatelet film is ~84%, which leads to a light-outcoupling efficiency of ~31%, substantially higher than that of isotropic emitters (~23%). In consequence, LEDs with a peak EQE of 23.6% are achieved, representing highly efficient planar perovskite LEDs.

Hybrid perovskite light emitting diodes under intense electrical excitation.

Project description:Hybrid perovskite semiconductors represent a promising platform for color-tunable light emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers; however, the behavior of these materials under the intense electrical excitation required for electrically-pumped lasing remains unexplored. Here, we investigate methylammonium lead iodide-based perovskite LEDs under short pulsed drive at current densities up to 620 A cm-2. At low current density (J < 10 A cm-2), we find that the external quantum efficiency (EQE) depends strongly on the time-averaged history of the pulse train and show that this curiosity is associated with slow ion movement that changes the internal field distribution and trap density in the device. The impact of ions is less pronounced in the high current density regime (J > 10 A cm-2), where EQE roll-off is dominated by a combination of Joule heating and charge imbalance yet shows no evidence of Auger loss, suggesting that operation at kA cm-2 current densities relevant for a laser diode should be within reach.
