Vinyl Thianthrenium Tetrafluoroborate: A Practical and Versatile Vinylating Reagent Made from Ethylene.

ABSTRACT: The use of vinyl electrophiles in synthesis has been hampered by the lack of access to a suitable reagent that is practical and of appropriate reactivity. In this work we introduce a vinyl thianthrenium salt as an effective vinylating reagent. The bench-stable, crystalline reagent can be readily prepared from ethylene gas at atmospheric pressure in one step and is broadly useful in the annulation chemistry of (hetero)cycles, N-vinylation of heterocyclic compounds, and palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The structural features of the thianthrene core enable a distinct synthesis and reactivity profile, unprecedented for other vinyl sulfonium derivatives.

Long-term survival of salivary streptococci on dental devices made of ethylene vinyl acetate.

Project description:Bacterial infection associated with the use of medical or dental devices is a serious concern. Although devices made of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) are often used in the oral cavity, there are no established standards for their storage. We investigated bacterial survival on EVA sheets under various storage conditions to establish a standard for hygienic storage of such dental devices. Bacterial counts were evaluated, which showed a significant decrease after washing with sterilized water, mechanical brushing and rinsing, and using Mouthguard Cleaner as compared to untreated samples. In addition, no bacteria were detected on samples stored 2 days or longer in a ventilated environment, whereas they were detected for up to 14 days on samples without any cleaning stored in a closed environment. Bacterial counts for the untreated samples gradually declined, while surviving bacteria on samples treated with sterilized water and mechanical brushing showed a rapid decrease. Additionally, bacterial identification using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed that Streptococcus oralis was dominantly detected on salivary samples after 14 days of storage among both two subjects. For effective hygienic storage of dental devices made of EVA, washing with sterilized water is important to remove absorbed salivary compounds along with storage in a ventilated environment.

Palau'chlor: a practical and reactive chlorinating reagent.

Project description:Unlike its other halogen atom siblings, the utility of chlorinated arenes and (hetero)arenes are twofold: they are useful in tuning electronic structure as well as acting as points for diversification via cross-coupling. Herein we report the invention of a new guanidine-based chlorinating reagent, CBMG or "Palau'chlor", inspired by a key chlorospirocyclization en route to pyrrole imidazole alkaloids. This direct, mild, operationally simple, and safe chlorinating method is compatible with a range of nitrogen-containing heterocycles as well as select classes of arenes, conjugated π-systems, sulfonamides, and silyl enol ethers. Comparisons with other known chlorinating reagents revealed CBMG to be the premier reagent.

A Chlorinating Reagent Yields Vinyl Chlorides with High Regioselectivity under Heterogeneous Gold Catalysis.

Project description:A novel chlorinating reagent with a high concentration of HCl has enabled the highly regioselective hydrochlorination of unactivated alkynes using a commercial nanogold catalyst. No overchlorination or hydration products were formed, and various functional groups were tolerated. This hydrochlorination method could be conducted under open air.

High-load, oligomeric dichlorotriazine: a versatile ROMP-derived reagent and scavenger.

Project description:A new high-load, soluble oligomeric dichlorotriazine (ODCT) reagent derived from ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is reported as an effective coupling reagent, scavenger of nucleophilic species, and activator of DMSO for the classic Swern oxidations. Two variants of this reagent (2G)ODCT 4 and (1G)ODCT 16, possessing theoretical loads of 5.3 and 7.3 mmol/g, respectively, have been synthesized. Preparation was accomplished via simple synthetic protocols affording free flowing powders, amenable for large-scale production. Removal of the spent oligomeric reagent was achieved via either precipitation of the spent reagent or simple filtration utilizing a silica SPE, followed by solvent removal, to deliver products in excellent yield and purity. In addition, the corresponding norbornenyl monomer 3 was successfully demonstrated in a couple-ROMP-filter protocol utilizing in situ polymerization, achieving comparable results versus the corresponding oligomeric variant.

Mechanistic Studies for Palladium Catalyzed Copolymerization of Ethylene with Vinyl Ethers.

Project description:The mechanism of ethylene with vinyl ether (VE, CH2=CHOEt) copolymerization catalyzed by phosphine-sulfonate palladium complex (A) was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. On achieving an agreement between theory and experiment, it is found that the favorable 1,2-selective insertion of VE into the complex A originates from stronger hydrogen interaction between the oxygen atom of VE and the ancillary ligand of catalyst A. Additionally, VE insertion is easier into the ethylene pre-inserted intermediate than that into the catalyst to form the resultant copolymers with the major units of OEt in chain and minor units of OEt at the chain end. The effect of β-OEt and β-H elimination was explored to elucidate chain termination and the molecular weight of copolymers. Furthermore, a family of cationic catalysts has been demonstrated to copolymerize ethylene with VE along with our modified cationic complex B with higher incorporation of VE and reactivity in comparison with complex A, which was modelled computationally by increasing the strong interactions between the catalyst and monomer moiety. Other than VE, the activity of cationic complex B for copolymerization of vinyl chloride and methacrylate is also computed successfully.

2-Diazo-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone: a versatile photochemical and synthetic reagent.

Project description:?-Diazo arylketones are well-known substrates for Wolff rearrangement to phenylacetic acids through a ketene intermediate by either thermal or photochemical activation. Likewise, ?-substituted p-hydroxyphenacyl (pHP) esters are substrates for photo-Favorskii rearrangements to phenylacetic acids by a different pathway that purportedly involves a cyclopropanone intermediate. In this paper, we show that the photolysis of a series of ?-diazo-p-hydroxyacetophenones and p-hydroxyphenacyl (pHP) ?-esters both generate the identical rearranged phenylacetates as major products. Since ?-diazo-p-hydroxyacetophenone (1a, pHP N2) contains all the necessary functionalities for either Wolff or Favorskii rearrangement, we were prompted to probe this intriguing mechanistic dichotomy under conditions favorable to the photo-Favorskii rearrangement, i.e., photolysis in hydroxylic media. An investigation of the mechanism for conversion of 1a to p-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid (4a) using time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy clearly demonstrates the formation of a ketene intermediate that is subsequently trapped by solvent or nucleophiles. The photoreaction of 1a is quenched by oxygen and sensitized by triplet sensitizers and the quantum yields for 1a-c range from 0.19 to a robust 0.25. The lifetime of the triplet, determined by Stern-Volmer quenching, is 31 ns with a rate for appearance of 4a of k = 7.1 × 10(6) s(-1) in aq. acetonitrile (1?:?1 v?:?v). These studies establish that the primary rearrangement pathway for 1a involves ketene formation in accordance with the photo-Wolff rearrangement. Furthermore we have also demonstrated the synthetic utility of 1a as an esterification and etherification reagent with a variety of substituted ?-diazo-p-hydroxyacetophenones, using them as synthons for efficiently coupling it to acids and phenols to produce pHP protect substrates.

Modular Synthesis of a Versatile Double-Allylation Reagent for Complex Diol Synthesis.

Project description:Double-allylation reagents allow for the construction of highly complex molecules in an expedient fashion. We have developed an efficient, modular, and enantioselective approach towards accessing novel variants of these reagents through Cu/Pd-catalyzed alkenylboration of alkenylboron derivatives. Importantly, we demonstrate novel use of an allylBdan reagent directly in a stereocontrolled allylation without initial deprotection to the boronic ester. These allylation products are employed in a second intermolecular allylation to access complex diol motifs, which has yet to be shown with these types of double-allylation reagents. Overall, the modularity of this approach and the ease in which complex structural motifs can be accessed in a rapid manner signify the importance and utility of this method.

Copolymerization of Ethylene and Vinyl Fluoride by Self-Assembled Multinuclear Palladium Catalysts.

Project description:The self-assembled multinuclear PdII complexes {(Li-OPOOMe2)PdMe(4-5-nonyl-pyridine)}4Li2Cl2 (C, Li-OPOOMe2 = PPh(2-SO3Li-4,5-(OMe)2-Ph)(2-SO3--4,5-(OMe)2-Me-Ph)), {(Zn-OP-P-SO)PdMe(L)}4 (D, L = pyridine or 4-tBu-pyridine, [OP-P-SO]3- = P(4-tBu-Ph)(2-PO32--5-Me-Ph)(2-SO3--5-Me-Ph)), and {(Zn-OP-P-SO)PdMe(pyridine)}3 (E) copolymerize ethylene and vinyl fluoride (VF) to linear copolymers. VF is incorporated at levels of 0.1-2.5 mol% primarily as in-chain -CH2CHFCH2- units. The molecular weight distributions of the copolymers produced by D and E are generally narrower than for catalyst C, which suggests that the Zn-phosphonate cores of D and E are more stable than the Li-sulfonate-chloride core of C under copolymerization conditions. The ethylene/VF copolymerization activities of C-E are over 100 times lower and the copolymer molecular weights (MWs) are reduced compared to the results for ethylene homopolymerization by these catalysts.

Project description:A pH-sensitive amphiphilic polymer based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), modified with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and adamantane (Ad) pendant groups, has been synthesized and the self-assembly properties of this PEG-PVA-Ad construct investigated. PEG-PVA-Ad polymer forms micelles via self-assembly at concentrations as low as 26 mg L-1. These polymer micelles can be destroyed by low pH or the addition of ?-CD.
