A Convenient Synthesis of Diketopyrrolopyrrole Dyes.

ABSTRACT: Diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrroles (DPP) are high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. They have applications in solar cells, fluorescent probes, bioimaging, photodynamic/photothermal therapy, and in many other areas. This article reports a convenient two-step synthesis of various DPP dyes from Pigment Red 254, an inexpensive commercial pigment. The synthesis includes a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of a bis(4-chlorophenyl)DPP derivative with aryl and hetaryl boronic acids under mild reaction conditions. The new dyes show large Stokes shifts and high fluorescence quantum yields, important features for their potential use in technical and biological applications.

Synthesis of Novel 3,6-Dithienyl Diketopyrrolopyrrole Dyes by Direct C?H Arylation.

Project description:Direct C?H arylation coupling is potentially a more economical and sustainable process than conventional cross-coupling. However, this method has found limited application in the synthesis of organic dyes for dye?sensitized solar cells. Although direct C?H arylation is not an universal solution to any cross-coupling reactions, it efficiently complements conventional sp2?sp2 bond formation and can provide shorter and more efficient routes to diketopyrrolopyrrole dyes. Here, we have applied palladium catalyzed direct C?H arylation in the synthesis of five new 3,6-dithienyl diketopyrrolopyrrole dyes. All prepared sensitizers display broad absorption from 350 nm up to 800 nm with high molar extinction coefficients. The dye?sensitized solar cells based on these dyes exhibit a power conversion efficiency in the range of 2.9 to 3.4%.

A convenient preparation of xanthene dyes.

Project description:A facile synthetic route utilizing readily available reagents affords a series of regioisomerically pure xanthene dye derivatives. Advantages include relatively mild conditions and good to excellent yields. Nonpolar, highly crystalline intermediates are isolable by standard chromatographic techniques. The intermediates are in the requisite xanthene oxidation state, thus avoiding the need for relatively inefficient oxidation chemistry and/or harsh conditions. During the course of this work, a new boron-mediated 1,2-aryl migration reaction was discovered.

Synthesis of fully asymmetric diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives.

Project description:Diaryl-diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPP) are a widely studied class of chromophore that possesses unique properties which have been of great interest for use in conjugated polymers and as small molecules in optoelectronic devices. While previously only partially asymmetric DPP derivatives have been reported, here a novel methodology towards fully asymmetric DPP derivatives is demonstrated via the synthesis and condensation of novel alkylated thienyl pyrrolinone esters with aromatic nitriles followed by N-alkylation. Two fully asymmetric DPP structural isomers T-DPP-P and P-DPP-T were synthesised demonstrating the full customizability of the DPP core. A further two fully asymmetric DPP derivatives incorporating an ethylene glycol chain and a furan moiety were also synthesised, demonstrating the scope of this powerful methodology and it's potential to largely broaden the library of available DPP derivatives.

Synthesis and Optoelectronic Properties of New Methoxy-Substituted Diketopyrrolopyrrole Polymers.

Project description:The introduction of functional groups with varying electron-donating/-withdrawing properties at the β-position of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) has been shown to affect the optoelectronic properties of the polymers. We report the synthesis of a new diketopyrrolopyrrole monomer wherein a strong electron-donating substituent, a methoxy group, was incorporated at the β-position in an effort to modulate polymer properties. Homopolymers and co-polymers of the new β-methoxy DPP and nonderivatized DPP were synthesized, and their properties were measured by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis-near-infrared. Density functional theory computations also were employed to predict the degree of planarity of β-methoxy oligomers to probe the significance of the newly introduced S-O conformational lock. The combined experimental and computational results showed a reduction in the gap between highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels, a redshift toward the near-infrared region, and an increased planarity in the β-methoxy polymers.

A Convenient Synthesis of 3,7'-Bisindole Derivatives.

Project description:An efficient and convenient method to synthesize highly functionalized 3,7'-bisindole derivatives has been developed via a Michael addition and cyclic condensation reaction of heterocyclic ketene aminals (HKAs) with 2-(1H-indol-3-yl)cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione derivatives in ethanol-based solvents at room temperature. This strategy provides an efficient, environmentally friendly approach for easy access to various novel 3,7'-bisindole derivatives in moderate to good yields.

Synthesis and Emergent Photophysical Properties of Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Supramolecular Self-Assembly.

Project description:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based molecular semiconductors exhibit intriguing optical and charge transport properties. Herein, we rationally design a series of electronically identical but structurally distinct Hamilton receptor (HR)-based supramolecular assembly of DPP. The HR endows supramolecular assemblies via hydrogen bonding with enhanced structural ordering and excitonic couplings. The mechanism of supramolecular self-assembly was probed by diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and solid-state IR spectroscopy studies. We investigated the morphology of self-assembly, photophysical and electrochemical properties and compared them with the identical DPP molecular structures without HRs. The microstructure of self-assembly was probed with atomic force microscopy in thin films. Subsequently, the influence of solid-state packing was studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The single-crystal structure of HR-TDPP-C20 reveals slipped stack arrangements between the two neighboring chromophores with π-π stacking distance and slip angle of 3.55 Å and 35.4°, respectively. Notably, the slight torsional angle of 1° between thiophene and lactam rings and small π-π stacking distance suggest a significant intermolecular coupling between thiophene (D) and lactam (A) rings. This intramolecular coupling between two π-π chromophore stacks manifests in their optical properties. In this manuscript, we report rational design and synthesis of supramolecular self-assembly of DPP with a collection of compelling structural and optical properties.

Convenient and Efficient Synthesis of Functionalized 2-Sulfenylindoles.

Project description:A simple, efficient, and practical sulfenylation at the C2 position of N-tosylindoles under mild conditions was developed. The designed transformation is based on the reaction of N-tosylindoles with BuLi and S-alkyl, and S-aryl phosphorodithioates or thiotosylates to produce 2-sulfenylindoles in moderate to high yields. The presence of additional hydroxy, carboxy, or amino functionalities did not disturb the formation of products.

Convenient microtiter plate-based, oxygen-independent activity assays for flavin-dependent oxidoreductases based on different redox dyes.

Project description:Flavin-dependent oxidoreductases are increasingly recognized as important biocatalysts for various industrial applications. In order to identify novel activities and to improve these enzymes in engineering approaches, suitable screening methods are necessary. We developed novel microtiter-plate-based assays for flavin-dependent oxidases and dehydrogenases using redox dyes as electron acceptors for these enzymes. 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol, methylene green, and thionine show absorption changes between their oxidized and reduced forms in the visible range, making it easy to judge visually changes in activity. A sample set of enzymes containing both flavoprotein oxidases and dehydrogenases - pyranose 2-oxidase, pyranose dehydrogenase, cellobiose dehydrogenase, D-amino acid oxidase, and L-lactate oxidase - was selected. Assays for these enzymes are based on a direct enzymatic reduction of the redox dyes and not on the coupled detection of a reaction product as in the frequently used assays based on hydrogen peroxide formation. The different flavoproteins show low Michaelis constants with these electron acceptor substrates, and therefore these dyes need to be added in only low concentrations to assure substrate saturation. In conclusion, these electron acceptors are useful in selective, reliable and cheap MTP-based screening assays for a range of flavin-dependent oxidoreductases, and offer a robust method for library screening, which could find applications in enzyme engineering programs.

Project description:A convenient one step synthesis of chlorotrifluoroalkyl olefins starting from aldehydes was developed. The stable reagent 2-((1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)sulfonyl)benzothiazole was prepared from readily available benzothiazole-2-thiol and halothane. This method comprises using stable 2-((1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)sulfonyl)benzothiazole according to the Julia procedure and presents new opportunities for the synthesis of trifluoroalkylidene derivatives.
