Helium Bubbles and Blistering in a Nanolayered Metal/Hydride Composite.

ABSTRACT: Helium is insoluble in most metals and precipitates out to form nanoscale bubbles when the concentration is greater than 1 at.%, which can alter the material properties. Introducing controlled defects such as multilayer interfaces may offer some level of helium bubble management. This study investigates the effects of multilayered composites on helium behavior in ion-implanted, multilayered ErD2/Mo thin film composites. Following in-situ and ex-situ helium implantation, scanning and transmission electron microscopy showed the development of spherical helium bubbles within the matrix, but primarily at the layer interfaces. Bubble linkage and surface blistering is observed after high fluence ex-situ helium implantation. These results show the ability of metallic multilayers to alter helium bubble distributions even in the presence of a hydride layer, increasing the lifetime of materials in helium environments.

Radiation Resistant Vanadium-Graphene Nanolayered Composite.

Project description:Ultra high strength V-graphene nanolayers were developed for the first time that was demonstrated to have an excellent radiation tolerance as revealed by the He(+) irradiation study. Radiation induced hardening, evaluated via nanopillar compressions before and after He(+) irradiation, is significantly reduced with the inclusion of graphene layers; the flow stresses of V-graphene nanolayers with 110?nm repeat layer spacing showed an increase of 25% while pure V showed an increase of 88% after He(+) dosage of 13.5?dpa. The molecular dynamics simulations confirmed that the graphene interface can spontaneously absorb the nearby crystalline defects that are produced from a collision cascade, thereby enhancing the lifetime of the V-graphene nanolayers via this self-healing effect. In addition, the impermeability of He gas through the graphene resulted in suppression of He bubble agglomerations that in turn reduced embrittlement. In-situ SEM compression also showed the ability of graphene to hinder crack propagation that suppressed the failure.

Resolving hydrogen atoms at metal-metal hydride interfaces.

Project description:Hydrogen as a fuel can be stored safely with high volumetric density in metals. It can, however, also be detrimental to metals, causing embrittlement. Understanding fundamental behavior of hydrogen at the atomic scale is key to improve the properties of metal-metal hydride systems. However, currently, there is no robust technique capable of visualizing hydrogen atoms. Here, we demonstrate that hydrogen atoms can be imaged unprecedentedly with integrated differential phase contrast, a recently developed technique performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope. Images of the titanium-titanium monohydride interface reveal stability of the hydride phase, originating from the interplay between compressive stress and interfacial coherence. We also uncovered, 30 years after three models were proposed, which one describes the position of hydrogen atoms with respect to the interface. Our work enables previously unidentified research on hydrides and is extendable to all materials containing light and heavy elements, including oxides, nitrides, carbides, and borides.

Hydrogenation Kinetics of Metal Hydride Catalytic Layers.

Project description:Catalyzing capping layers on metal hydrides are employed to enhance the hydrogenation kinetics of metal hydride-based systems such as hydrogen sensors. Here, we use a novel experimental method to study the hydrogenation kinetics of catalyzing capping layers composed of several alloys of Pd and Au as well as Pt, Ni, and Ru, all with and without an additional PTFE polymer protection layer and under the same set of experimental conditions. In particular, we employ a thin Ta film as an optical indicator to study the kinetics of the catalytic layers deposited on top of it and which allows one to determine the absolute hydrogenation rates. Our results demonstrate that doping Pd with Au results in significantly faster hydrogenation kinetics, with response times up to five times shorter than Pd through enhanced diffusion and a reduction in the activation energy. On the other hand, the kinetics of non-Pd-based materials turn out to be significantly slower and mainly limited by the diffusion through the capping layer itself. Surprisingly, the additional PTFE layer was only found to improve the kinetics of Pd-based capping materials and has no significant effect on the kinetics of Pt, Ni, and Ru. Taken together, the experimental results aid in rationally choosing a suitable capping material for the application of metal hydrides and other materials in a hydrogen economy. In addition, the used method can be applied to simultaneously study the hydrogenation kinetics in thin-film materials for a wide set of experimental conditions.

Evolution Law of Helium Bubbles in Hastelloy N Alloy on Post-Irradiation Annealing Conditions.

Project description:This work reports on the evolution law of helium bubbles in Hastelloy N alloy on post-irradiation annealing conditions. After helium ion irradiation at room temperature and subsequent annealing at 600 °C (1 h), the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrograph indicates the presence of helium bubbles with size of 2 nm in the depth range of 0-300 nm. As for the sample further annealed at 850 °C (5 h), on one hand, a "Denuded Zone" (0-38 nm) with rare helium bubbles forms due to the decreased helium concentration. On the other hand, the "Ripening Zone" (38-108 nm) and "Coalescence Zone" (108-350 nm) with huge differences in size and separation of helium bubbles, caused by different coarsening rates, are observed. The mechanisms of "Ostwald ripening" and "migration and coalescence", experimentally proved in this work, may explain these observations.

Evolution of Helium Bubbles and Discs in Irradiated 6H-SiC during Post-Implantation Annealing.

Project description:The single crystal 6H-SiC with [0001] crystal direction irradiated by 400 keV He⁺ ions with 1 × 1017 ions/cm² fluence at 400 °C were annealed at 600, 900, 1200 and 1400 °C for different durations. The evolution of helium bubbles and discs was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. An irradiated layer distributed with fine helium bubbles was formed with a width of ~170 nm after helium ion irradiation. The size of gas bubbles increased with increasing annealing time and temperature and finally reached stable values at a given annealing temperature. According to the relationship between the bubble radii and annealing time, an empirical formula for calculating the bubble radii at the annealing temperature ranged from 600 to 1400 °C was given by fitting the experiment data. Planar bubble clusters (discs) were found to form on (0001) crystal plane at both sides of the bubble layer when the annealing temperature was at the range of 800-1200 °C. The mechanism of bubble growth during post-implantation annealing and the formation of bubble discs were also analyzed and discussed.

Optimally designed nanolayered metal-dielectric particles as probes for massively multiplexed and ultrasensitive molecular assays.

Project description:An outstanding challenge in biomedical sciences is to devise a palette of molecular probes that can enable simultaneous and quantitative imaging of tens to hundreds of species down to ultralow concentrations. Addressing this need using surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based probes is potentially possible. Here, we theorize a rational design and optimization strategy to obtain reproducible probes using nanospheres with alternating metal and reporter-filled dielectric layers. The isolation of reporter molecules from metal surfaces suppresses chemical enhancement, and consequently signal enhancements are determined by electromagnetic effects alone. This strategy synergistically couples interstitial surface plasmons and permits the use of almost any molecule as a reporter by eliminating the need for surface attachment. Genetic algorithms are employed to optimize the layer dimensions to provide controllable enhancements exceeding 11 orders of magnitude and of single molecule sensitivity for nonresonant and resonant reporters, respectively. The strategy also provides several other opportunities, including a facile route to tuning the response of these structures to be spectrally flat and localization of the enhancement within a specific volume inside or outside the probe. The spectrally uniform enhancement for multiple excitation wavelengths and for different shifts enables generalized probes, whereas enhancement tuning permits a large dynamic range by suppression of enhancements from outside the probe. Combined, these theoretical calculations open the door for a set of reproducible and robust probes with controlled sensitivity for molecular sensing over a concentration range of over 20 orders of magnitude.

Self-organization of helium precipitates into elongated channels within metal nanolayers.

Project description:Material degradation due to precipitation of implanted helium (He) is a key concern in nuclear energy. Decades of research have mapped out the fate of He precipitates in metals, from nucleation and growth of equiaxed bubbles and voids to formation and bursting of surface blisters. By contrast, we show that He precipitates confined within nanoscale metal layers depart from their classical growth trajectories: They self-organize into elongated channels. These channels form via templated nucleation of He precipitates along layer surfaces followed by their growth and spontaneous coalescence into stable precipitate lines. The total line length and connectivity increases with the amount of implanted He, indicating that these channels ultimately interconnect into percolating "vascular" networks. Vascularized metal composites promise a transformative solution to He-induced damage by enabling in operando outgassing of He and other impurities while maintaining material integrity.

Formation of novel transition metal hydride complexes with ninefold hydrogen coordination.

Project description:Ninefold coordination of hydrogen is very rare, and has been observed in two different hydride complexes comprising rhenium and technetium. Herein, based on a theoretical/experimental approach, we present evidence for the formation of ninefold H- coordination hydride complexes of molybdenum ([MoH9]3-), tungsten ([WH9]3-), niobium ([NbH9]4-) and tantalum ([TaH9]4-) in novel complex transition-metal hydrides, Li5MoH11, Li5WH11, Li6NbH11 and Li6TaH11, respectively. All of the synthesized materials are insulated with band gaps of approximately 4 eV, but contain a sufficient amount of hydrogen to cause the H 1s-derived states to reach the Fermi level. Such hydrogen-rich materials might be of interest for high-critical-temperature superconductivity if the gaps close under compression. Furthermore, the hydride complexes exhibit significant rotational motions associated with anharmonic librations at room temperature, which are often discussed in relation to the translational diffusion of cations in alkali-metal dodecahydro-closo-dodecaborates and strongly point to the emergence of a fast lithium conduction even at room temperature.
