A facile synthesis of contorted spirobisindane-diamine and its microporous polyimides for gas separation.

ABSTRACT: Microporous polyimides (PIM-PIs, KAUST-PIs) and polymers containing Tröger's base (TB) derivatives with improved permeability and selectivity have great importance for separation of environmental gas pairs. Despite the tremendous progress in this field, facile synthesis of microporous polymers at the industrial scale via designing new monomers is still lacking. In this study, a new potential approach for large scale synthesis of spirobisindane diamine (DAS) (3) has been reported from commercially available 5,5',6,6'-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobisindane (TTSBI) and 3,4-difluoronitrobenzene. A series of DAS diamine based microporous polyimides were also synthesized. The resulting polymer membranes showed high mechanical and thermal properties with tunable gas separation performance.

Isomeric Aromatic Polyimides Containing Biphenyl Moieties for Gas Separation Applications.

Project description:An optimized synthesis of the monomer 2,2'3,3'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride, iBPDA, was performed to obtain high molecular weight polymers. This monomer has a contorted structure that produces a non-linear shape, hindering the packing of the polymer chain. Aromatic polyimides of high molecular weight were obtained by reaction with the commercial diamine 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl) hexafluoropropane, 6FpDA, which is a very common monomer in gas separation applications. This diamine has hexafluoroisopropylidine groups which introduce rigidity in the chains, hindering efficient packing. The thermal treatment of the polymers processed as dense membranes had two targets: on the one hand, to achieve the complete elimination of the solvent used, which could remain occluded in the polymeric matrix, and on the other hand to ensure the complete cycloimidization of the polymer. A thermal treatment exceeding the glass transition temperature was performed to ensure the maximum degree of imidization at 350 °C. The good mechanical properties of these materials allow for their use in high-pressure gas purification applications. Moreover, models of the polymers exhibited an Arrhenius-like behavior characteristic of secondary relaxations, normally associated with local motions of the molecular chain. The gas productivity of these membranes was high.

Melamine-Copolymerization Strategy Engineered Fluorinated Polyimides for Membrane-Based Sour Natural Gas Separation.

Project description:Membrane-based gas separation provides an energy-efficient approach for the simultaneous CO2 and H2S removal from sour natural gas. The fluorinated polyimide (PI) membranes exhibited a promising balance between permeability and permselectivity for sour natural gas separation. To further improve the separation efficiency of fluorinated PI membranes, a melamine-copolymerization synthetic approach is devised that aims to incorporate melamine motifs with high sour gas affinity into the structure of the PI membranes. The fluorinated copolyimide membranes that are structurally engineered exhibited excellent solution-processability and enhanced sweet-mixed gas selectivity compared to their original PI membranes. Additionally, under a five-component sour mixed-gas feed, these melamine-copolymerized fluorinated PI membranes provided superior combined H2S and CO2 removal efficiency in comparison to conventional glassy polymer membranes. The melamine-copolymerization strategy provides an easily operable and generally effective approach to developing performance-enhancing PI membranes for sour natural gas separation.

New Fluorine-Containing Diamine Monomers for Potentially Improved Polyimides.

Project description:Two new fluorine-containing diamine monomers were designed with the goal of reducing charge transfer complex (CTC) interactions between neighboring chains in polyimides (i.e., high transparency/low color) while hopefully maintaining the well-known thermal stability and flexibility generally associated with polyimides. The proposed diamines have been prepared through (1) the functionalization of 1,3-bis[(pentafluorobenzyl)oxy]benzene with 4-aminophenol and (2) the addition of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzotrifluoride to 4,4'-bicyclohexanol followed by reduction of the resulting dinitro compound. The new compounds have been characterized by multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy and high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction on the new diamine prepared from 4,4'-bicyclohexanol. Not only was the structure of the proposed new diamine confirmed, but another interesting example of hydrogen bonding between an N-H proton and the π-system of an aromatic ring was observed and documented. Initial polymerizations have been carried out via the two-step imidization process.

Facile Synthesis of Microporous Ferrocenyl Polymers Photocatalyst for Degradation of Cationic Dye.

Project description:Microporous organic polymers (MOPs) were prepared by condensation reactions from substituent-group-free carbazole and pyrrole with 1,1'-ferrocenedicarboxaldehyde without adding any catalysts. The resultant MOPs were insoluble in common solvent and characterized by FTIR, XPS, TGA and SEM. An N2 adsorption test showed that the obtained polymers PFcMOP and CFcMOP exhibited Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas of 48 and 105 m2 g-1, respectively, and both polymers possessed abundant micropores. The MOPs with a nitrogen and ferrocene unit could be potentially applied in degrading dye with high efficiency.

Facile Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Microporous Carbon Spheres for High Performance Symmetric Supercapacitors.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped microporous carbon spheres (NMCSs) are successfully prepared via carbonization and KOH activation of phenol-formaldehyde resin polymer spheres synthesized by a facile and time-saving one-step hydrothermal strategy using triblock copolymer Pluronic F108 as a soft template under the Stöber-like method condition. The influence of the ethanol/water volume ratios and carbonation temperatures on the morphologies, pore structures and electrochemical performances of the prepared NMCSs are investigated systematically. The optimal NMCSs have a large specific surface area of 1517 m2 g- 1 with a pore volume of 0.8 cm3 g- 1. The X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy analysis reveals a suitable nitrogen-doped content of 2.6 at.%. The as-prepared NMCSs used as supercapacitor electrode materials exhibit an outstanding specific capacitance of 416 F g- 1 at a current density of 0.2 A g- 1, also it shows an excellent charge/discharge cycling stability with 96.9% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The constructed symmetric supercapacitors using PVA/KOH as the gel electrolyte can deliver a specific capacitance of 60.6 F g- 1 at current density of 1 A g- 1. A maximum energy density of 21.5 Wh kg- 1 can be achieved at a power density of 800 W kg- 1, and the energy density still maintains 13.3 Wh kg- 1 even at a high power density of 16 kW kg- 1. The results suggest that this work can open up a facile and effective way to synthesize the NMCSs for electrode materials of high performance energy storage devices.

Synthesis of Highly Gas-Permeable Polyimides of Intrinsic Microporosity Derived from 1,3,6,8-Tetramethyl-2,7-diaminotriptycene.

Project description:A simple synthetic route to a novel sterically hindered triptycene-based diamine, 1,3,6,8-tetramethyl-2,7-diaminotriptycene (TMDAT), and its use in the preparation of high molecular weight polyimides of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-PIs) are reported. The organosoluble TMDAT-derived polyimides displayed high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas ranging between 610 and 850 m2 g-1 and demonstrated excellent thermal stability of up to 510 °C. Introduction of the rigid three-dimensional paddlewheel triptycene framework and the tetramethyl-induced restriction of the imide bond rotation resulted in highly permeable polyimides with moderate gas-pair selectivity. The best performing polyimide made from TMDAT and a triptycene-based dianhydride showed gas transport properties located between the 2008 and 2015 polymer permeability/selectivity trade-off curves with H2 and O2 permeabilities of 2858 and 575 barrer combined with H2/N2 and O2/N2 selectivities of 24 and 4.8, respectively, after 200 days of physical aging.

Ultra-selective molecular-sieving gas separation membranes enabled by multi-covalent-crosslinking of microporous polymer blends.

Project description:High-performance membranes exceeding the conventional permeability-selectivity upper bound are attractive for advanced gas separations. In the context microporous polymers have gained increasing attention owing to their exceptional permeability, which, however, demonstrate a moderate selectivity unfavorable for separating similarly sized gas mixtures. Here we report an approach to designing polymeric molecular sieve membranes via multi-covalent-crosslinking of blended bromomethyl polymer of intrinsic microporosity and Tröger's base, enabling simultaneously high permeability and selectivity. Ultra-selective gas separation is achieved via adjusting reaction temperature, reaction time and the oxygen concentration with occurrences of polymer chain scission, rearrangement and thermal oxidative crosslinking reaction. Upon a thermal treatment at 300 °C for 5 h, membranes exhibit an O2/N2, CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4 selectivity as high as 11.1, 154.5 and 813.6, respectively, transcending the state-of-art upper bounds. The design strategy represents a generalizable approach to creating molecular-sieving polymer membranes with enormous potentials for high-performance separation processes.

Facile Solvothermal Synthesis and Gas Sensitivity of Graphene/WO₃ Nanocomposites.

Project description:Graphene has attracted enormous attention owing to its extraordinary properties, while graphene-based nanocomposites hold promise for many applications. In this paper, we present a two-step exploitation method for preparation of graphene oxides and a facile solvothermal route for preparation of few-layer graphene nanosheets and graphene/WO₃ nanocomposites in an ethanol-distilled water medium. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and gas-sensing test. The resistivity of the thick-film gas sensors based on sandwich-like graphene/WO₃ nanocomposites can be controlled by varying the amount of graphene in the composites. Graphene/WO₃ nanocomposites with graphene content higher than 1% show fast response, high selectivity and fine sensitivity to NOx.

Mechanochemically-Assisted Synthesis of Polyimides.

Project description:Polyimides were obtained in 99 % yield in under 1 h through the "beat and heat" approach, involving solvent-free vibrational ball milling and a thermal treatment step. The influence of a plethora of additives was explored, such as Lewis acids, Lewis bases, and dehydrating agents, and the mechanochemical reaction was identified to run via a polyamic acid intermediate. The protocol was adopted to a range of substrates inaccessible through solution-based processes, including perylene tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and melamine. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations were conducted to identify the water removal as the crucial step in the reaction mechanism. The presented method is substantially faster and more versatile than the solution-based process.

Facile Synthesis of Microporous Carbons from Biomass Waste as High Performance Supports for Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid.

Project description:Formic acid (FA) is found to be a potential candidate for the storage of hydrogen. For dehydrogenation of FA, the supports of our catalysts were acquired by conducting ZnCl2 treatment and carbonation for biomass waste. The texture and surface properties significantly affected the size and dispersion of Pd and its interaction with the support so as to cause the superior catalytic performance of catalysts. Microporous carbon obtained by carbonization of ZnCl2 activated peanut shells (CPS-ZnCl2) possessing surface areas of 629 m2·g-1 and a micropore rate of 73.5%. For ZnCl2 activated melon seed (CMS-ZnCl2), the surface area and micropore rate increased to 1081 m2·g-1 and 80.0%, respectively. In addition, the introduction of ZnCl2 also caused the increase in surface O content and reduced the acidity of the catalyst. The results represented that CMS-ZnCl2 with uniform honeycomb morphology displayed the best properties, and the as-prepared Pd/CMS-ZnCl2 catalyst afforded 100% hydrogen selectivity as well as excellent catalytic activity with an initial high turnover number (TON) value of 28.3 at 30 °C and 100.1 at 60 °C.
