Isolation of Terrabacter sp. strain DDE-1, which metabolizes 1, 1-dichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethylene when induced with biphenyl.

ABSTRACT: Terrabacter sp. strain DDE-1, able to metabolize 1,1-dichloro-2, 2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE) in pure culture when induced with biphenyl, was enriched from a 1-1-1-trichloro-2, 2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane residue-contaminated agricultural soil. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of culture extracts revealed a number of DDE catabolites, including 2-(4'-chlorophenyl)-3,3-dichloropropenoic acid, 2-(4'-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxy acetic acid, 2-(4'-chlorophenyl) acetic acid, and 4-chlorobenzoic acid.

Project description:Recent data suggest that prenatal exposure to p,p'-DDE may reduce height and increase body mass index (BMI) in childhood, thus potentially raising the risk of adult health problems. The association between prenatal DDE exposure and growth was evaluated in 788 boys from Chiapas, an area of Mexico where DDT was recently used. The median DDE levels in maternal serum at birth (2002-2003) were 2.7 microg/g lipid. 2633 measurements of height (cm) and weight (kg) were obtained in 2004-2005. The median age of the children during follow-up was 18 months (quartiles 14 and 22 months). Height and body mass index (kg/m(2)) were age-standardized and expressed as standard deviation scores (SDS). Multivariate random-effect models for longitudinal data were fitted and predicted height and BMI SDS were estimated from the adjusted models. Overall, associations between prenatal DDE level and height or BMI SDS at any given age were not observed. For example, the predicted values showed that children with the highest exposure (DDE: >9.00 microg/g) compared to those least exposed (DDE: <3.01 microg/g) grew similarly and they had a BMI SDS similar to the referent group. The results do not support the prior findings of an association of DDE exposure with childhood height or BMI.

Project description:The title compound, [Cu(2)(C(14)H(8)O(4))(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)], is a centrosymmetric binuclear copper(II) complex, with a Cu?Cu separation of 6.136?(16)?Å. The Cu atom displays a cis-CuN(2)O(2) square-planar geometry, although two long (> 2.43?Å) Cu?O contacts complete a distorted cis-CuN(2)O(4) octa-hedron. Extensive C-H?O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network.

The bridging ligands generate an 18-membered ring, which is stabilized by two pairs of intra-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds.

Project description:The title compound, [Cu(2)(C(14)H(8)O(4))(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)], was obtained by solvothermal synthesis. The Cu(II) atom is coordinated by one chelating 2,2'-bipyridine ligand and two carboxyl groups from different biphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxyl-ate ligands, leading to a distorted octahedral environment. Each carboxyl-ate group makes one short Cu-O bond [1.9608 (14) and 1.9701 (14) Å] and one longer Cu-O contact [2.4338 (17) and 2.5541 (17) Å] to each Cu(II) atom. The biphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxyl-ate ligands bridge between Cu(II) atoms, forming a dinuclear complex around a crystallographic inversion centre.

Longer Co-O contacts [2.437 (3) and 2.552 (3) Å] are formed to the second O atom of each coordinated carboxyl-ate group so that these groups approximate a bidentate coordination mode and the coordination geometry around Co(II) approaches distorted octa-hedral. The 2,2'-dpa ligands bridge two Co(II) atoms, forming a cyclic dinuclear complex around a centre of inversion.

The mean planes of the terminal and inner benzene rings of the biphenyl groups bonded through a propan-1-one group in the V-shaped mol-ecule are oriented at angles of 66.1?(7) and 60.0?(8)°, respectively. The two Br atoms are opposite the propen-1-one group. Weak inter-molecular C-H?O and C-H?? inter-actions are observed in the crystal structure.
