Project description:Flexible Ag2Se NW/PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric composite films with different Ag2Se contents (10, 20, 30, 50, 70, and 80 wt.%) are fabricated. The Ag2Se nanowires are first fabricated with solution mixing. After that, Ag2Se NW/PEDOT:PSS composite film was fabricated using a simple drop-casting method. To evaluate the potential applications of the Ag2Se NW/PEDOT:PSS composite, their thermoelectric properties are analyzed according to their Ag2Se contents, and strategies for maximizing the thermoelectric power factor are discussed. The maximum room-temperature power factor of composite film (178.59 μW/m·K2) is obtained with 80 wt.% Ag2Se nanowires. In addition, the composite film shows outstanding durability after 1000 repeat bending cycles. This work provides an important strategy for the fabrication of high-performance flexible thermoelectric composite films, which can be extended to other inorganic/organic composites and will certainly promote their development and thermoelectric applications.

Project description:The combination of organic and inorganic materials has been considered an effective solution for achieving ambient thermoelectric energy harvesting and has been developing rapidly. Here, PEDOT:PSS/MWCNT (PPM) composite hydrogels were synthesized using the self-assembled gelation process of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and the interaction between PEDOT:PSS and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) without the addition of any surfactant. After immersion in dimethyl sulfoxide and freeze-drying, the hydrogel is easily dispersed in water and used as a direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing ink. At room temperature, the PPM-20 printed film with 20 wt% MWCNT solids achieved a maximum power factor of 7.37 μW m-1 K-2 and maintained stable thermoelectric properties during repeated bending cycles. On this basis, a thermoelectric generator (TEG) consisting of five legs was printed, which could be produced to generate an open circuit voltage of 6.4 mV and a maximum output power of 40.48 nW at a temperature gradient of 50 K, confirming its great potential for application in high-performance flexible organic/inorganic thermoelectric materials.

Project description:Flexible poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/polypyrrole/paper (PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper) thermoelectric (TE) nanocomposite films were prepared by a two-step method: first, PPy/paper nanocomposite films were prepared by an in situ chemical polymerization process, and second, PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper TE composite films were fabricated by coating the as-prepared PPy/paper nanocomposite films using a dimethyl sulfoxide-doped PEDOT:PSS solution. Both the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient of the PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper TE nanocomposite films were greatly enhanced from 0.06 S/cm to ~0.365 S/cm, and from 5.44 μV/K to ~16.0 μV/K at ~300 K, respectively, when compared to the PPy/paper TE nanocomposite films. The thermal conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper composite film (0.1522 Wm-1K-1 at ~300 K) was, however, only slightly higher than that of the PPy/paper composite film (0.1142 Wm-1K-1 at ~300 K). As a result, the ZT value of the PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper composite film (~1.85 × 10-5 at ~300 K) was significantly enhanced when compared to that of the PPy/paper composite film (~4.73 × 10-7 at ~300 K). The as-prepared nanocomposite films have great potential for application in flexible TE devices.

Project description:The thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PedotPSS) and tellurium-PedotPSS (Te-PedotPSS) hybrid composites were enhanced via simple chemical treatment. The performance of thermoelectric materials is determined by their electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient. Significant enhancement of the electrical conductivity ofPedotPSS and Te-PedotPSS hybrid composites from 787.99 and 11.01 to 4839.92 and 334.68 S cm(-1), respectively was achieved by simple chemical treatment with H2SO4. The power factor of the developed materials could be effectively tuned over a very wide range depending on the concentration of the H2SO4 solution used in the chemical treatment. The power factors of the developed thermoelectric materials were optimized to 51.85 and 284 μW m(-1) K(-2), respectively, which represent an increase of four orders of magnitude relative to the corresponding parameters of the untreated thermoelectric materials. Using the Te-PedotPSS hybrid composites, a flexible thermoelectric generator that could be embedded in textiles was fabricated by a printing process. This thermoelectric array generates a thermoelectric voltage of 2 mV using human body heat.

Project description:Nanostructuring in α-Cu2Se while optimizing carrier concentration holds the promise of realizing further high thermoelectric performance at near room temperature. Nevertheless, controlling the amounts of Cu vacancies, which work as acceptors, in nanostructures is considerably more intricate than in bulk materials. Hence, controlling the amounts of Cu vacancies while maintaining the α-phase and nanostructure shape poses a formidable challenge. In this study, we synthesized Cu2+x Se nanowires (NWs) with various amounts of Cu vacancies at room temperature by the photoreduction method and investigated their thermoelectric properties. Cu2+x Se NWs exhibited a comparable thermoelectric power factor to that of the polycrystalline films fabricated at higher temperature. The achievement of the high power factor despite low-temperature fabrication is attributed to the precise synthesis of Cu2+x Se NWs with various amounts of Cu vacancies. We also investigated the reaction process of Cu2.00Se NWs in detail by observing the reaction intermediates. It was found that photoreduction occurred with Cu2+ ions adsorbed on Se NWs, leading to the reaction of Cu2+ ions and Se NWs without Cu deficiency. Namely, this photoreduction under the adsorbed conditions realized the control of Cu vacancies in Cu2+x Se NWs.

Project description:We synthesized a hybrid nanocomposite comprised of selenium nanoparticles coated with a thin layer of a conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), and studied its thermoelectric properties. The conductive polymer layer on the surface of nanoparticles in the composites formed a percolating network running between the stacked nanoparticles, exhibiting an electrical conductivity close to or higher than that of pure polymer. The thermoelectric power factor of the resulting composite was higher than that of individual polymer or selenium nanoparticles. We further increased the electrical conductivity of the composite by thermal annealing, thereby improving the power factor to 15 μW/cmK2 which is nine times higher than that of the polymer.

Project description:We present a simple thermoelectric device that consists of a conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-based inorganic/organic thermoelectric film with high thermoelectric performance. The PEDOT:PSS-coated Se NWs were first chemically synthesized in situ, and then mixed with an Ag precursor solution to produce the PEDOT:PSS-coated Ag2Se NWs. The PEDOT:PSS matrix was then treated with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) prior to the production of flexible PEDOT:PSS-coated Ag2Se NW/PEDOT:PSS composite films with various weight fractions of Ag2Se via a simple drop-casting method. The thermoelectric properties (Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and power factor) of the composite films were then analyzed. The composite film with 50 wt.% NWs exhibited the highest power factor of 327.15 μW/m·K2 at room temperature. The excellent flexibility of this composite film was verified by bending tests, in which the thermoelectric properties were reduced by only ~5.9% after 1000 bending cycles. Finally, a simple thermoelectric device consisting of five strips of the proposed composite film was constructed and was shown to generate a voltage of 7.6 mV when the temperature difference was 20 K. Thus, the present study demonstrates that that the combination of a chalcogenide and a conductive composite film can produce a high-performance flexible thermoelectric composite film.

Project description:Over the past decade, Ag2Se has attracted increasing attention due to its potentially excellent thermoelectric (TE) performance as an n-type semiconductor. It has been considered a promising alternative to Bi-Te alloys and other commonly used yet toxic and/or expensive TE materials. To optimize the TE performance of Ag2Se, recent research has focused on fabricating nanosized Ag2Se. However, synthesizing Ag2Se nanoparticles involves energy-intensive and time-consuming techniques with poor yield of final product. In this work, we report a low-cost, solution-processed approach that enables the formation of Ag2Se thin films from Cu2-x Se template films via cation exchange at room temperature. Our simple two-step method involves fabricating Cu2-x Se thin films by the thiol-amine dissolution of bulk Cu2Se, followed by soaking Cu2-x Se films in AgNO3 solution and annealing to form Ag2Se. We report an average power factor (PF) of 617 ± 82 μW m-1 K-2 and a corresponding ZT value of 0.35 at room temperature. We obtained a maximum PF of 825 μW m-1 K-2 and a ZT value of 0.46 at room temperature for our best-performing Ag2Se thin-film after soaking for 5 minutes. These high PFs have been achieved via full solution processing without hot-pressing.

Project description:Transparent light detection devices are attractive for emerging see-through applications such as augmented reality, smart windows and optical communications using light fidelity (Li-Fi). Herein, we present flexible and transparent photodetectors (PDs) using conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS): Ag nanowires (NWs) based nanofibres and zinc oxide (ZnO) NWs on a transparent and degradable cellulose acetate (CA) substrate. The electrospun (PEDOT:PSS): Ag NW-based nanofibres exhibit a sheet resistance of 11 Ω/sq and optical transmittance of 79% (at 550 nm of wavelength). The PDs comprise of ZnO NWs, as photosensitive materials, bridging the electrode based on conductive nanofibres on CA substrate. The developed PDs exhibit high responsivity (1.10 ×106 A/W) and show excellent stability under dynamic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, and on both flat and curved surfaces. The eco-friendly PDs present here can degrade naturally at the end of life - thus offering an electronic waste-free solution for transparent electrodes and flexible optoelectronics applications.

Project description:Electrically conducting fibers and yarns are critical components of future wearable electronic textile (e-textile) devices such as sensors, antennae, information processors, and energy harvesters. To achieve reliable wearable devices, the development of robust yarns with a high conductivity and excellent washability is urgently needed. In the present study, highly conductive and machine-washable silk yarns were developed utilizing a Ag nanowire and PEDOT:PSS composite coating. Ag nanowires were coated on the silk yarn via a dip-coating process followed by coating with the conjugated polymer:polyelectrolyte complex PEDOT:PSS. The PEDOT:PSS covered the Ag nanowire layers while electrostatically binding to the silk, which significantly improved the robustness of the yarn as compared with the Ag nanowire-coated reference yarns. The fabricated conductive silk yarns had an excellent bulk conductivity of up to ∼320 S/cm, which is largely retained even after several cycles of machine washing. To demonstrate that these yarns can be incorporated into e-textiles, the conductive yarns were used to construct an all-textile out-of-plane thermoelectric device and a Joule heating element in a woven heating fabric.
