Type A γ-aminobutyric acid receptors (GABA<sub>A</sub>Rs) are pentameric ligand-gated chloride channels that mediate fast inhibitory signalling in neural circuits<sup>1,2</sup> and can be modulated by essential medicines including general anaesthetics and benzodiazepines<sup>3</sup>.
