Low-temperature phase of hexaguanidinium hepta-molybdate monohydrate.

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of the title compound, [C(NH(2))(3)](6)[Mo(7)O(24)]·H(2)O, previously determined at room temperature in the monoclinic space group C2/c from Weissenberg techniques [Don & Weakley (1981 ?). Acta Cryst. B37, 451-453], has been redetermined from low-temperature single-crystal data in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. The asymmetric unit contains one hepta-molybdate anion, six guanidinium cations and one water mol-ecule of hydration. The anions and cations are linked by an extensive network of N-H?O hydrogen bonds.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, K(I) (4)[Mo(III)(CN)(7)]·2H(2)O, consists of one [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) anion, four K(+) cations, and two water mol-ecules. The [Mo(III)(CN)(7)](4-) anion has a seven-coordinated capped-trigonal-prismatic coordination geometry. The site-occupancy factors of the disordered water mol-ecules were set at 0.90, 0.60 and 0.50. The H-atom positions could not be determined for two of the water mol-ecules. The H atoms of the water with a site-occupancy factor of 0.90 were refined using O-H and H⋯H distance restraints.

Redetermination of hexa-sodium hepta-molybdate(VI) 14-hydrate.

Project description:The structure of the title compound, Na(6)(Mo(7)O(24))·14H(2)O, has been redetermined [Sjöbom & Hedman (1973). Acta Chem. Scand.27, 3673-3674] and the hydrogen atoms have been located. The Na(+) cations adopt distorted octa-hedral geometries and the structure of the [Mo(7)O(24)](6-) anion is consistent with those of other hepta-molbydates. In the crystal, numerous O-H?O hydrogen bonds help to establish the packing.

Synthesis and crystal structure of a new hybrid organic-inorganic material containing neutral mol-ecules, cations and hepta-molybdate anions.

Project description:The title compound, hexa-kis-(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) hepta-molybdate 2-methyl-1H-imidazole disolvate dihydrate, (C4H7N2)6[Mo7O24]·2C4H6N2·2H2O, was prepared from 2-methyl-imidazole and ammonium hepta-molybdate tetra-hydrate in acid solution. The [Mo7O24]6- hepta-molybdate cluster anion is accompanied by six protonated (C4H7N2)+ 2-methyl-imidazolium cations, two neutral C4H6N2 2-methyl-imidazole mol-ecules and two water mol-ecules of crystallization. The cluster consists of seven distorted MoO6 octa-hedra sharing edges or vertices. In the crystal, the components are linked by N-H⋯N, N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O, N-H⋯(O,O) and O-H⋯(O,O) hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional network. Weak C-H⋯O inter-actions consolidate the packing.

The low-temperature phase of morpholinium tetra-fluoro-borate.

Project description:The crystal structure of the low-temperature form of the title compound, C(4)H(10)NO(+)·BF(4) (-), was determined at 80?K. Two reversible phase transitions, at 158/158 and 124/126?K (heating/cooling), were detected by differential scanning calorimetry for this compound, and the sequence of phase transitions was subsequently confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. The asymmetric unit at 80?K consists of three BF(4) (-) tetra-hedral anions and three morpholinium cations (Z' = 3). Hydrogen-bonded morpholinium cations form chains along the [100] direction. The BF(4) (-) anions are connected to these chains by N-H?F hydrogen bonds. In the crystal structure, two different layers perpendicular to the [001] direction can be distinguished, which differ in the geometry of the hydrogen bonds between cationic and anionic species.

Insulating phase at low temperature in ultrathin La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 films.

Project description:Metal-insulator transition is observed in the La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 thin films with thickness larger than 5 unit cells. Insulating phase at lower temperature appeared in the ultrathin films with thickness ranging from 6 unit cells to 10 unit cells and it is found that the Mott variable range hopping conduction dominates in this insulating phase at low temperature with a decrease of localization length in thinner films. A deficiency of oxygen content and a resulting decrease of the Mn valence have been observed in the ultrathin films with thickness smaller than or equal to 10 unit cells by studying the aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy of the films. These results suggest that the existence of the oxygen vacancies in thinner films suppresses the double-exchange mechanism and contributes to the enhancement of disorder, leading to a decrease of the Curie temperature and the low temperature insulating phase in the ultrathin films. In addition, the suppression of the magnetic properties in thinner films indicates stronger disorder of magnetic moments, which is considered to be the reason for this decrease of the localization length.

The structured 'low temperature' phase of the retinal population code.

Project description:Recent advances in experimental techniques have allowed the simultaneous recordings of populations of hundreds of neurons, fostering a debate about the nature of the collective structure of population neural activity. Much of this debate has focused on the empirical findings of a phase transition in the parameter space of maximum entropy models describing the measured neural probability distributions, interpreting this phase transition to indicate a critical tuning of the neural code. Here, we instead focus on the possibility that this is a first-order phase transition which provides evidence that the real neural population is in a 'structured', collective state. We show that this collective state is robust to changes in stimulus ensemble and adaptive state. We find that the pattern of pairwise correlations between neurons has a strength that is well within the strongly correlated regime and does not require fine tuning, suggesting that this state is generic for populations of 100+ neurons. We find a clear correspondence between the emergence of a phase transition, and the emergence of attractor-like structure in the inferred energy landscape. A collective state in the neural population, in which neural activity patterns naturally form clusters, provides a consistent interpretation for our results.

Low-temperature gas-phase formation of indene in the interstellar medium.

Project description:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are fundamental molecular building blocks of fullerenes and carbonaceous nanostructures in the interstellar medium and in combustion systems. However, an understanding of the formation of aromatic molecules carrying five-membered rings-the essential building block of nonplanar PAHs-is still in its infancy. Exploiting crossed molecular beam experiments augmented by electronic structure calculations and astrochemical modeling, we reveal an unusual pathway leading to the formation of indene (C9H8)-the prototype aromatic molecule with a five-membered ring-via a barrierless bimolecular reaction involving the simplest organic radical-methylidyne (CH)-and styrene (C6H5C2H3) through the hitherto elusive methylidyne addition-cyclization-aromatization (MACA) mechanism. Through extensive structural reorganization of the carbon backbone, the incorporation of a five-membered ring may eventually lead to three-dimensional PAHs such as corannulene (C20H10) along with fullerenes (C60, C70), thus offering a new concept on the low-temperature chemistry of carbon in our galaxy.

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of hen lysozyme at low pH.

Project description:The equilibrium unfolding of hen lysozyme at pH 2 was studied as a function of pressure (0.1~700MPa) and temperature (-10°C~50°C) using Trp fluorescence as monitor supplemented by variable pressure 1H NMR spectroscopy (0.1~400MPa). The unfolding profiles monitored by the two methods allowed the two-state equilibrium analysis between the folded (N) and unfolded (U) conformers. The free energy differences ΔG (=GU-GN) were evaluated from changes in the wavelength of maximum fluorescence intensity (λmax) as a function of pressure and temperature. The dependence of ΔG on temperature exhibits concave curvatures against temperature, showing positive heat capacity changes (ΔCp =CpU-CpN= 1.8-1.9 kJ mol-1 deg-1) at all pressures studied (250~400 MPa), while the temperature TS for maximal ΔG increased from about 10°C at 250MPa to about 40°C at 550MPa. The dependence of ΔG on pressure gave negative volume changes (ΔV=VU-VN) upon unfolding at all temperatures studied (-86~-17 mlmol-1 for -10°C~50°C), which increase significantly with increasing temperature, giving a positive expansivity change (Δα~1.07mlmol-1 deg-1). A phase-diagram between N and U (for ΔG=0) is drawn of hen lysozyme at pH 2 on the pressure-temperature plane. Finally, a three-dimensional free energy landscape (ΔG) is presented on the p-T plane.

CoolTip: Low-Temperature Solid-Phase Microextraction Tip for Capturing Hydrophilic Phosphopeptides

Project description:We developed a simple temperature controlled desalting strategy to cover from hydrophilic to hydrophobic peptides. Reversed-phase solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques are commonly used for shotgun-proteomics using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. In reversed-phase chromatography, solid-phase temperature is one of the parameters that influences peptide retention, and the analytical column temperatures have been well optimized for the peptide separations. However, little attention has been given to the temperatures of solid-phase extraction columns for sample preparations. We showed that the recovery of hydrophilic (phospho)peptides improved with lower temperature SPE-tips (CoolTips) and identification coverage of the hydrophilic (phospho)peptides can be extended without sacrificing the recovery of hydrophobic peptides. CoolTip also provided better quantitative reproducibility of the peptides, and we envision this protocol can improve the performance of any kinds of proteomics experiments.

Project description:The octa-hedral cluster core of the anion in the structure of the title compound, (C(16)H(36)N)(3)[Mo(6)(C(4)H(9)S)(6)(?(3)-Cl)(7)(?(3)-S)]·2H(2)O, has -3 site symmetry. Two ?(3)-Cl atoms fully occupy positions in the cluster core, while the remaining six positions are statistically occupied by Cl and S atoms in a 1:5 ratio. The fully occupied Cl-atom positions are located on sites with 3 symmetry, and the N atom of tetra-butyl-ammonium cation is located on a site with 2 symmetry. The structure contains also two disordered solvent water mol-ecules, one of which is located on a threefold rotation axis and the other in a general position, both with an occupancy of 0.25. The water mol-ecules are localized in cavities formed by the tetra-butyl-ammonium cations and the tert-butane-thiol-ate groups. The metal clusters are stacked in a cubic close packing arrangement along [001].
