1-Benzyl-2-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(20)H(16)N(2), has been synthesized by the reaction of benzaldehyde with o-phenyl-endiamine and l-proline. The benzimidazole group makes a dihedral angle of 29.04?(1)° with the attached benzene ring, and is approximately perpendicular to the plane of the benzyl group [dihedral angle = 88.9?(1)°] The crystal packing exhibits no unusually short inter-molecular contacts.

These pairs are further linked by inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds into chains along [010]. Weak inter-molecular C-H?O and C-H?? inter-actions further consolidate the crystal packing. The dihedral angles between the pendant phenyl rings and the benzimidazole ring are 86.9?(2) and 43.1?(2)°.
