Cerium(III) dihydroxidohexa-oxidotetra-borate chloride.

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of the title compound, Ce[B(4)O(6)(OH)(2)]Cl, is built from polyborate sheets parallel to the (001) plane. These sheets stack along the [001] direction and are linked by Ce atoms exhibiting an CeO(8)Cl(2) coordination sphere. O-H?O and O-H?Cl hydrogen bonds additionally stabilize the structural set-up. The polyborate sheet is made up of zigzag borate chains running along the [[Formula: see text]10] direction. These zigzag chains are inter-connected by shared O-vertices, resulting in a two-dimensional layer with nine-membered rings. All B and O atoms (except for the terminal OH atoms) lie in the nearly planar sheets of polyborates, leading to their isotropic atomic displacement parameters being significantly smaller than usual. This may be attributed to the fact that the atomic displacement parameters correlate not only with their atomic masses but with their coordination environments also.

Project description:Our findings suggested that exposure to CeCl3 led to hippocampal lesions, apoptosis, oxidative stress and impairment of spatial recognition memory. Furthermore, microarray data showed marked alterations in the expression of 154 genes involved in learning and memory, immunity and inflammation, signal transduction, apoptosis and response to stress in the 2 mg/kg CeCl3 exposed hippocampi. Cerium is widely used in many aspects of modern society, including agriculture, industry and medicine. It has been demonstrated to enter the ecological environment, is then transferred to humans through food chains, and causes toxic actions in several organs including the brain of animals. However, the neurotoxic molecular mechanisms are not clearly understood. In this study, mice were exposed to 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/kg BW cerium chloride (CeCl3) for 90 consecutive days, and their learning and memory ability as well as hippocampal gene expression profile were investigated. Our findings suggested that exposure to CeCl3 led to hippocampal lesions, apoptosis, oxidative stress and impairment of spatial recognition memory. Furthermore, microarray data showed marked alterations in the expression of 154 genes involved in learning and memory, immunity and inflammation, signal transduction, apoptosis and response to stress in the 2 mg/kg CeCl3 exposed hippocampi. Specifically, the significant up-regulation of Axud1, Cdc37, and Ube2v1 caused severe apoptosis, and great suppression of Adcy8, Fos, and Slc5a7 expression led to impairment of mouse cognitive ability. Therefore, Axud1, Cdc37, Ube2v1, Adcy8, Fos, and Slc5a7 may be potential biomarkers of hippocampal toxicity caused by CeCl3 exposure.

A convenient and eco-friendly cerium(III) chloride-catalysed synthesis of methoxime derivatives of aromatic aldehydes and ketones.

Project description:The use of CeCl3·7H2O as an efficient and eco-friendly promoter for the convenient synthesis of methoximes derived from aromatic aldehydes and ketones, is reported. The transformations entail the use of equimolar amounts of MeONH2·HCl and NaOAc in EtOH at 50°C, and no special precautions are needed with regard to the presence of oxygen. The scope and limitations of the transformation were studied and a reaction mechanism was proposed.

Project description:In the structure of the title complex, {[CeFe(CN)(6)(H(2)O)(2)]·2H(2)O}(n), the Ce(III) and Fe(III) atoms exhibit square anti-prismatic [CeN(6)(H(2)O)(2)] (site symmetry m2m) and octahedral [FeC(6)] (site symmetry 2/m) coordination geometries, respectively. The metal atoms are linked alternately through the cyanide groups, forming a three-dimensional framework in which the {Ce(2)Fe(2)(CN)(4)} puckered square unit is the basic building block. The crystal packing is enforced by O-H?O and O-H?N hydrogen bonds, including the uncoordinated water molecule which is located on a mirror plane.

Facile and Reversible Formation of Iron(III)-Oxo-Cerium(IV) Adducts from Nonheme Oxoiron(IV) Complexes and Cerium(III).

Project description:Ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) or CeIV (NH4 )2 (NO3 )6 is often used in artificial water oxidation and generally considered to be an outer-sphere oxidant. Herein we report the spectroscopic and crystallographic characterization of [(N4Py)FeIII -O-CeIV (OH2 )(NO3 )4 ]+ (3), a complex obtained from the reaction of [(N4Py)FeII (NCMe)]2+ with 2?equiv CAN or [(N4Py)FeIV =O]2+ (2) with CeIII (NO3 )3 in MeCN. Surprisingly, the formation of 3 is reversible, the position of the equilibrium being dependent on the MeCN/water ratio of the solvent. These results suggest that the FeIV and CeIV centers have comparable reduction potentials. Moreover, the equilibrium entails a change in iron spin state, from S=1 FeIV in 2 to S=5/2 in 3, which is found to be facile despite the formal spin-forbidden nature of this process. This observation suggests that FeIV =O complexes may avail of reaction pathways involving multiple spin states having little or no barrier.

Tris(N,N'-diisopropyl-benzamidinato)cerium(III).

Project description:The title compound, [Ce(C(13)H(19)N(2))(3)], was obtained in moderate yield (67%) by treatment of anhydrous cerium trichloride with three equivalents of Li[PhC(N(i)Pr)(2)] in tetra-hydro-furan. It is the first homoleptic lanthanide complex of this amidinate ligand. The central Ce(III) ion is coordinated by three chelating benzamidinate anions in a distorted octa-hedral fashion, with Ce-N distances in the narrow range 2.482?(2)-2.492?(2)?Å. The dihedral angles between the phenyl rings and the chelating N-C-N units are in the range 73.3-87.9°, thus preventing conjugation between the two ?-systems. The mol-ecule is located on a twofold rotation axis, and one of the phenyl rings is equally disordered over two alternative symmetry-equivalent positions around this axis.

Isoprene Polymerization: Catalytic Performance of Iminopyridine Vanadium(III) Chloride versus Vanadium(III) Chloride.

Project description:A series of vanadium complexes bearing iminopyridine bidentate ligands with various electronic and steric properties: V1 [CH2Ph], V2 [CMe2CH2CMe3], V3 [Ph] and V4 [2,6-iPr2Ph] were prepared and characterized by IR spectroscopy and microanalytical analysis. The catalytic capacity of all the complexes has been investigated for isoprene polymerization and was controlled by tuning the ligand structure with different N-alkyl and N-aryl groups. Activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO), the aryl-substituted complex V3 [Ph] exhibited high cis-1,4 selectivity (75%), and the resultant polymers had high molecular weights (Mn = 6.6 × 104) and narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI = 2.3). This catalyst showed high activity up to 734.4 kg polymer (mol V)-1 h-1 with excellent thermostability even stable at 70 °C. Compared to the traditional VCl3/MAO catalytic system, iminopyridine-supported V(III) catalysts displayed higher catalytic activities and changed the selectivity of monomer enchainment from trans-1,4 to cis-1,4.

Project description:Single crystals of NdBO(2)MoO(4) were obtained from a molybdenum oxide-boron oxide flux under an air atmosphere. The structure features double chains of edge- and face-sharing distorted [NdO(10)] bicapped square-anti-prisms, which are linked by rows of isolated [MoO(4)] tetra-hedra and by zigzag chains of corner-sharing [BO(3)] groups, all of them running along the b axis. The chains of [NdO(10)], chains of [BO(3)] and rows of [MoO(4)] groups are arranged in layers parallel to the bc plane.

Project description:The title compound, [Mn(2)O(2)(C(10)H(24)N(4))(2)](C(24)H(20)B)(2)Cl·2CH(3)CN, is a mixed-valent Mn(III)/Mn(IV) oxide-bridged mangan-ese dimer with one chloride and two tetra-phenyl-borate counter-anions. There are two non-coordinated mol-ecules of acetonitrile in the formula unit. A center of inversion is present between the two metal atoms, and, consequently, there is no distinction between Mn(III) and Mn(IV) metal centers. In the Mn(2)O(2) core, the Mn-O distances are 1.817 (3) and 1.821 (3) Å. The cyclam ligand is in the cis configuration. The chloride counter-anion resides on a center of symmetry, whereas the tetra-phenyl-borate counter-anion is in a general position. The cyclam ligand is hydrogen bonded to the acetonitrile as well as to the chloride anion. One of the phenyl rings of the anion and the acetonitrile solvent molecule are each disordered over two sets of sites.
