Project description:In the title compound, C(24)H(25)NO, the phenyl and diphenyl-methanol substituents are syn to each other. The pyrrolidine ring has an envelope conformation with the flap atom being the C atom bearing the phenyl substituent. The hy-droxy group forms an intra-molecular hydrogen bond with the pyrrolidine N atom, and the phenyl rings lie to same side of the mol-ecule. The crystal packing features C-H?? inter-actions. Two slightly displaced co-planar orientations were found for one of the phenyl rings; the major component had a site-occupancy factor of 0.782?(15).

It is displaced by 0.316?(1)?Å out of the square plane (r.m.s. deviation = 0.015?Å) in the direction of the apical Cl atom. The apical Cl atoms of adjacent complex units are hydrogen-bond acceptors to two water mol-ecules, the inter-action generating a centrosymmetric dimer through a cyclic R(4) (2)(8) association.

In the crystal, two C atoms of the pyrrolidin-2-one ring are disordered over two positions in a 1:1 ratio.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(13)H(14)N(2)·1.5H(2)O, contains two similar mol-ecules of 3-(1-methyl-pyrrolidin-2-yl-idene)-3H-indole, (I), and three water mol-ecules. (I) is the product of reacting indole with 1-methyl-pyrrolidin-2-one in the presence of phospho-rus oxychloride. Both organic molecules are almost completely planar; the maximum distances above and below the least-squares plane through all the atoms of mol-ecule 1 are 0.050?(8) and -0.045?(8)?Å, respectively, and the deviations for mol-ecule 2 are 0.096?(8) and -0.059?(8)?Å, respectively. In the crystal, the two crystallographically different mol-ecules alternate in ?-stacked columns [centroid-centroid distances = 3.729?(5) and 3.858?(5)?Å], which are linked by O-H?N hydrogen bonds to a network of hydrogen-bonded water mol-ecules. O-H?O inter-actions are also present.

The methyl-ene fragments of the benzyl groups participate in non-classic hydrogen-bond inter-actions with the carbonyl O atoms of neighboring mol-ecules, generating co-operative centrosymmetric dimers with R 5 (5)(10) ring motifs. The overall mol-ecular arrangement in the unit cell seems to be highly influenced by secondary non-covalent weak C-Cl?? [Cl?Cg(phenyl ring) = 3.732?(2)?Å] and C-O?? [O?Cg(pyrrolidine ring) = 2.985?(2)?Å] contacts.
