ABSTRACT: A new series of pyrrolo[3',4':3,4]pyrrolo[1,2-a]furoquinolines/phenanthrolines and pyrrolo[1,2-a]phenanthrolines were efficiently built up from an 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative or phenanthroline via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction involving non-stabilized azomethine ylides, generated in situ from the parent furo[3,2-h]quinoliniums/phenanthroliums, in presence of a copper(II) chloride-phenanthroline catalytic system. The methodology combines general applicability with high yields.

Hypervalent Iodine(III)-Promoted C3-H Regioselective Halogenation of 4-Quinolones under Mild Conditions.

Project description:A simple and practical protocol for the C3-H regioselective halogenation of 4-quinolones by the action of potassium halide salt and PIFA/PIDA in good to excellent yields was developed. The current approach provides feasible access to the diversity of C3-halgenated 4-quinolones at room temperature with high regioselectivity and good functional group tolerance, from which bioactive compounds can be easily constructed. Moreover, the current method featured eco-friendly, operational convenience and is suitable for halogenation in a gram scale of 4-quinolones in water without sacrificing yields.

Ethyl 1-benzyl-1,2,3,3a,4,10b-hexa-hydro-pyrrolo-[2',3':3,4]pyrrolo-[1,2-a]benzimidazole-2-carboxyl-ate.

Project description:The title mol-ecule, C(22)H(23)N(3)O(2), was obtained via an intra-molecular cyclo-addition of an azomethine ylide and an alkene tethered by a benzimidazole unit. The benzoimidazole unit is essentially planar, with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.0087?Å from the nine constituent atoms. It has a cis fusion of the two pyrrolidine rings as well as a cis ester appendage. The two pyrrolidine rings rings have envelope conformations. The crystal packing is stabilized by aromatic ?-? stacking of parallel benzimidazole ring systems, with a centroid-to-centroid distance of 3.518?(6)?Å. Weak inter-molecular C-H?O contacts may also play a role in the stability of the packing.

Conversion of Polyolefin Waste to Liquid Alkanes with Ru-Based Catalysts under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Chemical upcycling of waste polyolefins via hydrogenolysis offers unique opportunities for selective depolymerization compared to high temperature thermal deconstruction. Here, we demonstrate the hydrogenolysis of polyethylene into liquid alkanes under mild conditions using ruthenium nanoparticles supported on carbon (Ru/C). Reactivity studies on a model n-octadecane substrate showed that Ru/C catalysts are highly active and selective for the hydrogenolysis of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds at temperatures ranging from 200 to 250 °C. Under optimal conditions of 200 °C in 20 bar H2, polyethylene (average M w ∼ 4000 Da) was converted into liquid n-alkanes with yields of up to 45% by mass after 16 h using a 5 wt % Ru/C catalyst with the remaining products comprising light alkane gases (C1-C6). At 250 °C, nearly stoichiometric yields of CH4 were obtained from polyethylene over the catalyst. The hydrogenolysis of long chain, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and a postconsumer LDPE plastic bottle to produce C7-C45 alkanes was also achieved over Ru/C, demonstrating the feasibility of this reaction for the valorization of realistic postconsumer plastic waste. By identifying Ru-based catalysts as a class of active materials for the hydrogenolysis of polyethylene, this study elucidates promising avenues for the valorization of plastic waste under mild conditions.

Atomically Precise, Thiolated Copper-Hydride Nanoclusters as Single-Site Hydrogenation Catalysts for Ketones in Mild Conditions.

Project description:Copper-hydrides are known catalysts for several technologically important reactions such as hydrogenation of CO, hydroamination of alkenes and alkynes, and chemoselective hydrogenation of unsaturated ketones to unsaturated alcohols. Stabilizing copper-based particles by ligand chemistry to nanometer scale is an appealing route to make active catalysts with optimized material economy; however, it has been long believed that the ligand-metal interface, particularly if sulfur-containing thiols are used as stabilizing agent, may poison the catalyst. We report here a discovery of an ambient-stable thiolate-protected copper-hydride nanocluster [Cu25H10(SPhCl2)18]3- that readily catalyzes hydrogenation of ketones to alcohols in mild conditions. A full experimental and theoretical characterization of its atomic and electronic structure shows that the 10 hydrides are instrumental for the stability of the nanocluster and are in an active role being continuously consumed and replenished in the hydrogenation reaction. Density functional theory computations suggest, backed up by the experimental evidence, that the hydrogenation takes place only around a single site of the 10 hydride locations, rendering the [Cu25H10(SPhCl2)18]3- one of the first nanocatalysts whose structure and catalytic functions are characterized fully to atomic precision. Understanding of a working catalyst at the atomistic level helps to optimize its properties and provides fundamental insights into the controversial issue of how a stable, ligand-passivated, metal-containing nanocluster can be at the same time an active catalyst.

This protocol leverages a novel ligand, 2-((2,6-dimethoxyphenyl)amino)-2-oxoacetic acid, to effect the transformation in aqueous DMSO, under mild conditions and in air, making it an ideal candidate for the synthesis of DNA-encoded libraries.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Cu(C(9)H(9)O(4))(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))], contains one half-mol-ecule, the complete mol-ecule being generated by a twofold rotation axis. The Cu(II) atom exhibits a six-coordinated distorted octa-hedral geometry with two N atoms from the phenanthroline ligand [Cu-N 2.007?(2)?Å] and four O atoms from two 3,4-dimethoxy-benzoate ligands [Cu-O 1.950?(1) and 2.524?(1)?Å]. The difference in Cu-O bond distances indicates a strong Jahn-Teller effect. In the crystal, C-H?? inter-actions result in chains of mol-ecules along the c axis.

Copper-Mediated Conversion of Complex Ethers to Esters: Enabling Biopolymer Depolymerisation under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Selective processing of the ?-O-4 unit in lignin is essential for the efficient depolymerisation of this biopolymer and therefore its successful integration into a biorefinery set-up. An approach is described in which this unit is modified to incorporate a carboxylic ester with the goal of enabling the use of mild depolymerisation conditions. Inspired by preliminary results using a Cu/TEMPO/O2 system, a protocol was developed that gave the desired ?-O-4-containing ester in high yield using certain dimeric model compounds. The optimised reaction conditions were then applied to an oligomeric lignin model system. Extensive 2D NMR analysis demonstrated that analogous chemistry could be achieved with the oligomeric substrate. Mild depolymerisation of the ester-containing oligomer delivered the expected aryl acid monomer.
