Bis(acetylacetonato)copper(II) - structural and electronic data of the neutral, oxidized and reduced forms.

ABSTRACT: Bis(acetylacetonato)copper(II) can be synthesized economically and with ease by the reaction between acetylacetone and a copper salt (Cu(OAc)2 or CuCl2·2H2O). When used as catalyst, bis(acetylacetonato)copper(II) is sometimes being oxidized to Cu(III) or reduced to Cu(I), although only the structure of the neutral form is known experimentally. The content of this paper provides computational chemistry calculated data of the geometry, electronic structure, spin state and frontier orbitals for the neutral, as well as the oxidized and reduced forms of the bis(acetylacetonato)copper(II) molecule. This data shows that both the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the neutral molecule are copper based. The neutral molecule is a spin = ½ system. The data shows that the spin state of both the oxidized and reduced molecules is zero.

Project description:In this data article, density functional theory (DFT) calculated data for the optimized geometries and electronic structure data of the neutral, oxidized and reduced forms of the fac and mer isomers of tris(amino-pent-3-en-2-onato-N,O)ruthenium(III) as representative example of tris(?-ketoiminato)ruthenium(III) complexes is provided. Energy-level diagrams of the neutral, oxidized and reduced molecules, show the effect on the molecular energy levels and the electron occupation of the frontier orbitals, when the neutral complex is oxidized or reduced. The DFT calculated data also confirms the spin state of the molecules and show that the fac and mer isomers of tris(amino-pent-3-en-2-onato-N,O)ruthenium(III) are equi-energetic.

Study of Electronic and Vibrational Structures of Reduced, Neutral, and Oxidized Ni3(dpa)4X2 Using Density Functional Theory and Raman Spectroscopy.

Project description:The electronic and vibrational structures of trinickel metal string complexes [Ni3(dpa)4X2]1-,0,1+ (X = Cl, NCS) were investigated using both theoretical calculations and spectroscopic methods. We used the density functional theory (DFT) method B3LYP*-D3, including less exact exchange energy and the van der Waals interaction of metal ions, to obtain the geometries and vibrational structures, which were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data. The ground state of Ni3(dpa)4X2 is an antiferromagnetic (AF) singlet state, and the next state is a quintet state, which was detected using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy under a magnetic field. The vibrational structure of the quintet state is nearly identical to that of the AF state, according to the measured Raman spectra, except that the stretching of Ni-Cl is blue-shifted from 282.5 cm-1 in the AF state to 283.8 cm-1 in the quintet state. Two oxidized Ni3 complexes were found to have [Ni3]7+ cores, the doublet [Ni3(dpa)4]3+ without axial ligands and the quartet [Ni3(dpa)4X2]+. Complex [Ni3(dpa)4X2]-, which was produced from a reduction reaction by gold nanoparticles at room temperature, consists of a quartet state as the ground state and a doublet state lying nearby.

Electronic Structure and Reactivity Studies of a Nonsymmetric One-Electron Oxidized CuII Bis-phenoxide Complex.

Project description:The tetradentate mixed imino/amino phenoxide ligand (N-(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-N'-(2-hydroxyl-3,5-di-tert-butylbenzyl))-trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine (salalen) was complexed with CuII, and the resulting Cu complex (2) was characterized by a number of experimental techniques and theoretical calculations. Two quasi-reversible redox processes for 2, as observed by cyclic voltammetry, demonstrated the potential stability of oxidized forms, and also the increased electron-donating ability of the salalen ligand in comparison to the salen analogue. The electronic structure of the one-electron oxidized [2]+ was then studied in detail, and Cu K-edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) measurements confirmed a CuII-phenoxyl radical complex in solution. Subsequent resonance Raman (rR) and variable temperature 1H NMR studies, coupled with theoretical calculations, showed that [2• ]+ is a triplet (S = 1) CuII-phenoxyl radical species, with localization of the radical on the more electron-rich aminophenoxide. Attempted isolation of X-ray quality crystals of [2• ]+ afforded [2H]+, with a protonated phenol bonded to CuII, and an additional H-bonding interaction with the SbF6 - counterion. Stoichiometric reaction of dilute solutions of [2• ]+ with benzyl alcohol showed that the complex reacted in a similar manner as the oxidized CuII-salen analogue, and does not exhibit a substrate-binding pre-equilibrium as observed for the oxidized bisaminophenoxide CuII-salan derivative.

Crystal structures of oxidized and reduced forms of human mitochondrial thioredoxin 2.

Project description:Mammalian thioredoxin 2 is a mitochondrial isoform of highly evolutionary conserved thioredoxins. Thioredoxins are small ubiquitous protein-disulfide oxidoreductases implicated in a large variety of biological functions. In mammals, thioredoxin 2 is encoded by a nuclear gene and is targeted to mitochondria by a N-terminal mitochondrial presequence. Recently, mitochondrial thioredoxin 2 was shown to interact with components of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and to play a role in the control of mitochondrial membrane potential, regulating mitochondrial apoptosis signaling pathway. Here we report the first crystal structures of a mammalian mitochondrial thioredoxin 2. Crystal forms of reduced and oxidized human thioredoxin 2 are described at 2.0 and 1.8 A resolution. Though the folding is rather similar to that of human cytosolic/nuclear thioredoxin 1, important differences are observed during the transition between the oxidized and the reduced states of human thioredoxin 2, compared with human thioredoxin 1. In spite of the absence of the Cys residue implicated in dimer formation in human thioredoxin 1, dimerization still occurs in the crystal structure of human thioredoxin 2, mainly mediated by hydrophobic contacts, and the dimers are associated to form two-dimensional polymers. Interestingly, the structure of human thioredoxin 2 reveals possible interaction domains with human peroxiredoxin 5, a substrate protein of human thioredoxin 2 in mitochondria.

Project description:In the title mononuclear complex, [Cu(C(9)H(9)O(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)], the Cu(II) ion, located on an inversion center, is hexa-coordinated by four O atoms from two benzyl-oxyacetate ligands [Cu-O = 1.9420 (14) and 2.2922 (14) Å] and two water mol-ecules [Cu-O = 2.0157 (15) Å] in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into layers parallel to the bc plane.

Project description:In the title compound, [Cu(ClO(4))(2)(CH(3)CN)(2)(H(2)O)(2)], the Cu(2+) ion, located on a special position (site symmetry [Formula: see text]), is coordinated by six monodentate ligands, viz. an N-coordin-ated acetonitrile, a perchlorate anion and a water mol-ecule, and their symmetry-related counterparts. The perchlorate anion is disordered over two sets of sites with occupancies of 0.53?(2) and 0.47?(2). The crystal structure is stabilized by O-H?O hydrogen bonds involving the perchlorate ion and aqua H atoms.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title complex, [Cu(C(4)H(5)O(2))(2)(C(5)H(5)N)(2)(H(2)O)], the Cu(II) cation is located on a twofold rotation axis and coordinated by two methyl-acrylate anions, two pyridine ligands and one water mol-ecule in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. The coordinated water mol-ecule is also located on the twofold axis. In the crystal structure O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules, forming chains along the c axis.

Project description:In the title compound, [Cu(ClO(4))(2)(C(12)H(13)N(3))(C(2)H(3)N)], the Cu(II) atom is six-coordinate in a Jahn-Teller distorted octahedral geometry, with coordination by the tridentate chelating ligand, an acetonitrile mol-ecule, and two axial perchlorate anions. The tridentate ligand bis-(2-pyridylmeth-yl)amine chelates meridionally and equatorially while an acetonitrile mol-ecule is coordinated at the fourth equatorial site. The two perchlorate anions are disordered with site occupancy factors of 0.72/0.28. The amine H is involved in intra-molecular hydrogen bonding to the perchlorate O atoms and there are extensive but weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions.
