The mitochondrial and chloroplast proteome of Euglena gracilis

ABSTRACT: Euglena gracilis is regarded as a flexible and adaptable free-living protist of considerable biotechnological interest. We carried out proteomic analysis of the E. gracilis purified chloroplast and mitochondrion. These data provide a new level of insight into functions and unique characteristics of these organelles and reveals the manner, in which these differ from its counterparts in other organisms.

Euglena gracilis is a metabolically flexible, photosynthetic, and adaptable free-living protist of considerable environmental importance and biotechnological value. By label-free liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, a total of 1,786 proteins were identified from the E. gracilis purified mitochondria, representing one of the largest mitochondrial proteomes so far described. Despite this apparent complexity, protein machinery responsible for the extensive RNA editing, splicing, and proc  ...[more]
