Peer review of the pesticide risk assessment of the active substance Akanthomyces muscarius strain Ve6, formerly Lecanicillium muscarium strain Ve6.

Project description:The conclusions of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) following the peer review of the initial risk assessments carried out by the competent authorities of the rapporteur Member State, the Netherlands, and co-rapporteur Member State, France, for the pesticide active substance Akanthomyces muscarius strain Ve6 formerly Lecanicillium muscarium strain Ve6 are reported. The context of the peer review was that required by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 844/2012 as amended by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2018/1659. The conclusions were reached on the basis of the evaluation of the representative uses of Akanthomyces muscarius strain Ve6 as an insecticide on fruiting vegetables of cucurbitaceae with edible and inedible peel, fruiting vegetables of solanaceae, strawberries, floriculture crops (except roses), cut roses and tree nursery. The reliable end points, appropriate for use in regulatory risk assessment, are presented. Missing information identified as being required by the regulatory framework is listed. Concerns are identified.

Evolution of hypervirulence during bloodstream adaptation of CA-MRSA strain USA300

Project description:The epidemic community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA) clone USA300 has recently become a leading cause of hospital-associated bloodstream infections (BSI). Leveraging this recent introduction into hospitals and the limited genetic variation across the USA300 strains, we combined microbial comparative genomics with phenotypic analyses to discover adaptive mutations. USA300 isolates from BSI were found to have independently evolved single nucleotide variants in the transcriptional regulator sarZ. sarZ inactivation lead to altered expression of virulence factors, resulting in increased lethality in a murine model of BSI. Thus, USA300 strains can optimize their fitness in hospitals through evolution of higher virulence.

Whole-genome resequencing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 after anti-virulence treatments targeting iron uptake

Project description:We carried out an experimental evolution in human serum as an ex-vivo model and screened evolved lines for the evolution of resistance phenotypes towards two anti-virulence treatments, gallium and flucytosine, which both target the iron scavenging pyoverdine of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (each at 2 different doses). We performed whole-genome sequencing of 16 evolved clones from the different treatment regimes .
