Project description:Samples of 3D skin, irradiated using LED light and compared with un-exposed control, regarding one- and four-days of incubation. Three groups were simulating acute exposure: 1h, 2h and 4 hours whereas the 3D skin samples irradiated for 1 hour over four sequential days were simulating repeated exposure, for both blue wavelength and the full visible spectrum of digital light.

Intense ultraviolet-visible-infrared full-spectrum laser.

Project description:A high-brightness ultrabroadband supercontinuum white laser is desirable for various fields of modern science. Here, we present an intense ultraviolet-visible-infrared full-spectrum femtosecond laser source (with 300-5000 nm 25 dB bandwidth) with 0.54 mJ per pulse. The laser is obtained by sending a 3.9 μm, 3.3 mJ mid-infrared pump pulse into a cascaded architecture of gas-filled hollow-core fiber, a bare lithium niobate crystal plate, and a specially designed chirped periodically poled lithium niobate crystal, under the synergic action of second and third order nonlinearities such as high harmonic generation and self-phase modulation. This full-spectrum femtosecond laser source can provide a revolutionary tool for optical spectroscopy and find potential applications in physics, chemistry, biology, material science, industrial processing, and environment monitoring.

Enabling nonconjugated polyesters emit full-spectrum fluorescence from blue to near-infrared.

Project description:Near-infrared luminophores have many advantages in advanced applications, especially for structures without π-conjugation aromatic rings. However, the fabrication of red clusteroluminogens from nonconjugated polymers is still a big challenge, let alone the near-infrared clusteroluminogens. Here, we develop nonconjugated luminophores with full-spectrum from blue to near-infrared light (470 ~ 780 nm), based on color phenomenon of nonconjugated polyesters synthesized from the amine-initiated copolymerization of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides. We reveal that amines act as initiators attached to polymer chain ends. The formation of various amine-ester complexes in polyesters induces red to near-infrared light, conceptually, amine-ester complexed clusteroluminescence via intra/inter-chain charge transfer. Significantly, emission colors can be easily tuned by the contents and types of amines, microstructures of polyesters, and their concentration. This work provides a low-cost, scalable platform and strategy for the production of high-efficiency, multicolor luminescent materials.

Bioprinting of Injectable Centimeter-scale Architectures with a Visible-light Crosslinking Bioink

Project description:This study propose a novel visible-light crosslinking hydrogel bioink (termed GP) to fabricate injectable centimeter-scale architectures. Composed of GelMA with large molecular weight PEGDA, GP can form a reinforced dual-crosslinking network, presenting excellent superelasticity and stability, supporting injection pass nozzles with 1.5mm inner diameter after bioprinted as 15mm×15mm scale architectures. Moreover, when printing with living cells, even for sensitive cell lines like genome-edited cells, the transcriptome of cells after printing shows no difference, suggesting the high cell printing suitability of GP and the visible-light extrusion printing technique. The printed architectures can support long-term culture for at least 14 days, and GP provides cells with a biocompatible microenvironment, supporting cell survival, proliferation, and function maintenance.

Aperiodic TiO2 nanotube photonic crystal: full-visible-spectrum solar light harvesting in photovoltaic devices.

Project description:Bandgap engineering of a photonic crystal is highly desirable for photon management in photonic sensors and devices. Aperiodic photonic crystals (APCs) can provide unprecedented opportunities for much more versatile photon management, due to increased degrees of freedom in the design and the unique properties brought about by the aperiodic structures as compared to their periodic counterparts. However, many efforts still remain on conceptual approaches, practical achievements in APCs are rarely reported due to the difficulties in fabrication. Here, we report a simple but highly controllable current-pulse anodization process to design and fabricate TiO2 nanotube APCs. By coupling an APC into the photoanode of a dye-sensitized solar cell, we demonstrate the concept of using APC to achieve nearly full-visible-spectrum light harvesting, as evidenced by both experimental and simulated results. It is anticipated that this work will lead to more fruitful practical applications of APCs in high-efficiency photovoltaics, sensors and optoelectronic devices.
