Synthesis and reactivity of a mono-sigma-aryl palladium(IV) fluoride complex.

ABSTRACT: This communication describes the rational design and synthesis of the remarkably stable Pd(IV) monoaryl fluoride complex (t-Bu-bpy)Pd(IV)(p-FC(6)H(4))(F)(2)(FHF) (t-Bu-bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine). This and related complexes undergo Ar-F bond formation in the presence of "F(+)" sources. This work serves as a foundation for the development of Pd(II/IV)-catalyzed coupling reactions to form aryl fluorides.

Project description:This article describes the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of palladium(II) fluoride complexes containing sp(2) and sp(3) nitrogen-containing supporting ligands. Both cis and trans complexes of general structure (N)(N')Pd(II)(R)(F) (R = Ar or CH(3)) as well as cis-(N)(2)Pd(II)(F)(2) are reported. Crystallographic characterization of these molecules has allowed structural comparisons to related phosphine-ligated species. Furthermore, these studies have revealed that nitrogen-donor ligands support some of the longest and the shortest Pd-F bonds reported to date. The thermal decomposition of (N)(N')Pd(II)(R)(F) has also been examined, and no products of C-F bond-forming reductive elimination were obtained in any case.

Synthesis and Reactivity of a Bioinspired Molybdenum(IV) Acetylene Complex.

Project description:The isolation of a molybdenum(IV) acetylene (C2H2) complex containing two bioinspired 6-methylpyridine-2-thiolate ligands is reported. The synthesis can be performed either by oxidation of a molybdenum(II) C2H2 complex or by substitution of a coordinated PMe3 by C2H2 on a molybdenum(IV) center. Both C2H2 complexes were characterized by spectroscopic means as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the reactivity of the coordinated C2H2 was investigated with regard to acetylene hydratase, one of two enzymes that accept C2H2 as a substrate. While the reaction with water resulted in the vinylation of the pyridine-2-thiolate ligands, an intermolecular nucleophilic attack on the coordinated C2H2 with the soft nucleophile PMe3 was observed to give a cationic ethenyl complex. A comparison with the tungsten analogues revealed less tightly bound C2H2 in the molybdenum variant, which, however, shows a higher reactivity toward nucleophiles.

Aryl-CF(3) bond-forming reductive elimination from palladium(IV).

Project description:This communication describes oxidatively induced Ar-CF(3) bond-forming reductive elimination from new Pd(II) complexes of general structure (L approximately L)Pd(II)(Ar)(CF(3)). The electrophilic fluorinating reagent N-fluoro-2,4,6-trimethylpyridinium triflate promotes these reactions in good to excellent yields. The palladium(IV) intermediate ((t)Bu-bpy)Pd(IV)(CF(3))(F)(OTf)(C(6)H(4)F) has been isolated, characterized, and demonstrated to undergo high yielding Ar-CF(3) coupling upon thermolysis. This work provides an attractive conceptual framework for the development of Pd(II/IV)-catalyzed arene trifluoromethylation reactions.

Palladium-catalyzed synthesis of N-aryl carbamates.

Project description:An efficient synthesis of aryl carbamates was achieved by introducing alcohols into the reaction of palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of ArX (X = Cl, OTf) with sodium cyanate. The use of aryl triflates as electrophilic components in this transformation allowed for an expanded substrate scope for direct synthesis of aryl isocyanates. This methodology provides direct access to major carbamate protecting groups, S-thiocarbamates, and diisocyanate precursors to polyurethane materials.

Synthesis and reactivity of a mononuclear non-haem cobalt(IV)-oxo complex.

Project description:Terminal cobalt(IV)-oxo (CoIV-O) species have been implicated as key intermediates in various cobalt-mediated oxidation reactions. Herein we report the photocatalytic generation of a mononuclear non-haem [(13-TMC)CoIV(O)]2+ (2) by irradiating [CoII(13-TMC)(CF3SO3)]+ (1) in the presence of [RuII(bpy)3]2+, Na2S2O8, and water as an oxygen source. The intermediate 2 was also obtained by reacting 1 with an artificial oxidant (that is, iodosylbenzene) and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. In particular, the resonance Raman spectrum of 2 reveals a diatomic Co-O vibration band at 770 cm-1, which provides the conclusive evidence for the presence of a terminal Co-O bond. In reactivity studies, 2 was shown to be a competent oxidant in an intermetal oxygen atom transfer, C-H bond activation and olefin epoxidation reactions. The present results lend strong credence to the intermediacy of CoIV-O species in cobalt-catalysed oxidation of organic substrates as well as in the catalytic oxidation of water that evolves molecular oxygen.

Aryl Fluoride Activation Through Palladium-Magnesium Bimetallic Cooperation: A Mechanistic and Computational Study.

Project description:Herein is described a mechanistic study of a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl Grignard reagents to fluoroarenes that proceeds via a low-energy heterobimetallic oxidative addition pathway. Traditional oxidative additions of aryl chlorides to Pd complexes are known to be orders of magnitude faster than with aryl fluorides, and many palladium catalysts do not activate aryl fluorides at all. The experimental and computational studies outlined herein, however, support the view that at elevated Grignard : ArX ratios (i.e. 2.5 : 1) a Pd-Mg heterobimetallic mechanism predominates, leading to a remarkable decrease in the energy required for Ar-F bond activation. The heterobimetallic transition state for C-X bond cleavage is proposed to involve simultaneous Pd backbonding to the arene and Lewis acid activation of the halide by Mg to create a low-energy transition state for oxidative addition. The insights gained from this computational study led to the development of a phosphine ligand that was shown to be similarly competent for Ar-F bond activation.

Efficient Palladium-Catalyzed Synthesis of 2-Aryl Propionic Acids.

Project description:A flexible two-step, one-pot procedure was developed to synthesize 2-aryl propionic acids including the anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and flurbiprofen. Optimal results were obtained in the presence of the novel ligand neoisopinocampheyldiphenylphosphine (NISPCPP) (9) which enabled the efficient sequential palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling of aryl bromides with ethylene and hydroxycarbonylation of the resulting styrenes to 2-aryl propionic acids. This cascade transformation leads with high regioselectivity to the desired products in good yields and avoids the need for additional purification steps.

Bis-N-heterocyclic carbene palladium(IV) tetrachloride complexes: synthesis, reactivity, and mechanisms of direct chlorinations and oxidations of organic substrates.

Project description:This Article describes the preparation and isolation of novel octahedral CH(2)-bridged bis-(N-heterocyclic carbene)palladium(IV) tetrachlorides of the general formula LPd(IV)Cl(4) [L = (NHC)CH(2)(NHC)] from LPd(II)Cl(2) and Cl(2). In intermolecular, nonchelation-controlled transformations LPd(IV)Cl(4) reacted with alkenes and alkynes to 1,2-dichlorination adducts. Aromatic, benzylic, and aliphatic C-H bonds were converted into C-Cl bonds. Detailed mechanistic investigations in the dichlorinations of alkenes were conducted on the 18VE Pd(IV) complex. Positive solvent effects as well as kinetic measurements probing the impact of cyclohexene and chloride concentrations on the rate of alkene chlorination support a Pd(IV)-Cl ionization in the first step. Product stereochemistry and product distributions from various alkenes also support Cl(+)-transfer from the pentacoordinated Pd(IV)-intermediate LPd(IV)Cl(3)(+) to olefins. 1-Hexene/3-hexene competition experiments rule out both the formation of π-complexes along the reaction coordinate as well as in situ generated Cl(2) from a reductive elimination process. Instead, a ligand-mediated direct Cl(+)-transfer from LPd(IV)Cl(3)(+) to the π-system is likely to occur. Similarly, C-H bond chlorinations proceed via an electrophilic process with in situ formed LPd(IV)Cl(3)(+). The presence of a large excess of added Cl(-) slows cyclohexene chlorination while the presence of stoichiometric amounts of chloride accelerates both Pd(IV)-Cl ionization and Cl(+)-transfer from LPd(IV)Cl(3)(+). (1)H NMR titrations, T1 relaxation time measurements, binding isotherms, and Job plot analysis point to the formation of a trifurcated Cl(-)···H-C bond in the NHC-ligand periphery as a supramolecular cause for the accelerated chemical events involving the metal center.

Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of 5-(Aryl)dibenzothiophenium Triflates.

Project description:A synthetic protocol for the preparation of 5-(aryl)dibenzothiophenium salts starting from inexpensive dibenzothiophene S-oxide and simple arenes is reported. The scope of the method regarding the nature of the arene is evaluated, intermediates along the reaction sequence have been trapped, and side-reactions identified. In addition, the X-ray structures of a complete set of these salts are reported and their reactivities studied. Specifically, chemoselective Suzuki coupling is observed at the dibenzothiophenium in the presence of iodides.

One-pot palladium-catalyzed synthesis of sulfonyl fluorides from aryl bromides.

Project description:A mild, efficient synthesis of sulfonyl fluorides from aryl and heteroaryl bromides utilizing palladium catalysis is described. The process involves the initial palladium-catalyzed sulfonylation of aryl bromides using DABSO as an SO2 source, followed by in situ treatment of the resultant sulfinate with the electrophilic fluorine source NFSI. This sequence represents the first general method for the sulfonylation of aryl bromides, and offers a practical, one-pot alternative to previously described syntheses of sulfonyl fluorides, allowing rapid access to these biologically important molecules. Excellent functional group tolerance is demonstrated, with the transformation successfully achieved on a number of active pharmaceutical ingredients, and their precursors. The preparation of peptide-derived sulfonyl fluorides is also demonstrated.
